Dear SAL Supporters,
On behalf of the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2014 Cioppino & Heroes Dinner Night, “Good Claws Great Cause”. Tonight we not only have a delicious dinner provided by The Fish Market and this great venue provided by The SportsHouse, but we also are honoring an individual and a business this year with the “Defying Gravity Award”. We salute Ted Hannig in all of his contributions and the differences he has made in so many lives. He truly defies gravity in all that he has created and accomplished locally and abroad. We also salute Rocket Fuel, Inc. for their dedication and passion for people, especially youth, helping them become positive and contributing members of society, with the promotion of education, respect and compassion.
Our “Deputy of the Year Award” this year goes to Deputy Shawn Chase for his vision and goal to help youth develop into leaders and to aid them in overcoming the contemporary youthful challenges seen in so many neighborhoods.
Our SAL “Youth of the Year Award” will be given to Stephanie Vazquez. Stephanie goal is to encourage others to become part of the community not just by living in the community but by actually making their community united and safe! These honorees are heroes, supporters of SAL are heroes, the SAL staff and deputies that work with the youth in our communities are heroes, but the biggest heroes are the youth that work hard to learn and grow into responsible adults.
SAL focuses on Building the Bond Between Deputies and Kids through programs such as SAL Healthy Kids, Mentoring, Leadership Development and Character Development. We are now serving over 3,000 kids in 12 chapters throughout San Mateo County and the need continues to grow. We are investing in the future of San Mateo County and we applaud you for doing the same.
I am proud of the accomplishments of the Sheriff’s Activities League for making our community a better place with a brighter future for the youth of San Mateo County. I thank all of the SAL supporters for being a part of something that benefits so many.

October 16, 2014
Dear Community Members,It is my pleasure to welcome you to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Activities League’s 3rd Annual Cioppino & Heroes Dinner Night.
The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Activities League is an organization that is dedicated to enhancing the lives of the youth in our community by providing them with valuable resources and creating positive relationships between youth and law enforcement. Every day the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Activities League works with youth in San Mateo County to reduce juvenile delinquency, thereby reducing the number of gang members and future crime in San Mateo County. They do this by providing them with an array of valuable tools and resources such as anti-bullying programs, tutoring, mentoring, sports, SAL Healthy Kids, community service projects and many other programs. These tools encourage our youth to become responsible citizens and have a greater chance for success in life.
When we provide children with mentors, education, and a safe and loving environment, we are giving them a different outlook on life and they begin to do things they never thought were possible. SAL is dedicated to the process of making that happen.
Many thanks go to all of the volunteers and staff who helped make tonight’s event a success. I would also like to congratulate tonight’s award recipients for the outstanding work they do to support the youth in our communities. Your efforts make our community a better place.
Thank you all for being here tonight and supporting the Sheriff’s Activities League. I hope you will enjoy the event.
Thank you,

Sheriff’s Award
San Mateo County enjoys a collaborative relationship between the Sheriff’s Offices and the legal profession. It’s not surprising then that the Sheriff’s Activities League has chosen one of our
County’s leading legal professionals to receive the “Defying Gravity” Award.
Defying GravityIndividual Award
The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Activities League (SAL) is proud
to honor Ted Hannig with the SAL “Defying Gravity” Award. Ted
Hannig is the epitome of someone that “Defies Gravity” and goes
above and beyond for many local organizations and global causes.
Ted is a bright star that makes a difference in the lives of so many
people. If every community had a Ted Hannig, the world would
be a better place.
Ted has been a SAL supporter for many years. He has provided
sound advice and crucial start up support for new SAL programs
over the years. He assisted in the development of the SAL
Target Mentoring program that is matching disconnected and
underserved youth with a positive role model. The results
continue to show that mentored youth improved in their school
performance, attendance, confidence, attitudes and relationships
with other adults. They learned to avoid risky behaviors and begin
to engage in positive healthy behaviors and choices.
This year, Ted assisted with a new pilot program, Media in Motion/
Vid Kids. Media in Motion/Vid Kids, a media-based program model,
uses media as a vehicle to promote learning and social change.
The program piloted over the summer and produced a news
magazine video show. The youth learn all aspect of producing a
video based show, from filming to editing to acting and everything
in between. The program, thanks to Ted’s support, will continue
in three locations this winter and continue to expand throughout
the county.
Ted has donated thousands of hours to community service . He is
committed to helping people who are less well off in the community
and abroad. He has served on numerous boards, including Kainos;
the founding board member of the Sequoia Awards, Broadway
by the Bay, the Danford Foundation and Casa de Redwood, the
senior housing apartments for low-income families that his father
originally co-founded. He often visits’ each of the residents during
the Christmas season each year. He started the “Give Something
Back” sailboat race (The Hannig Cup), which has distributed over
$2 million to charities emphasizing youth programs. He is the
recipient of several community awards for his numerous efforts
on behalf of local non-profit organizations, including “Community
Star” awards from Gentry Magazine, the United States Congress,
the California State Legislature, the County of San Mateo, and the
City of Redwood City. He was honored on September 22, 2011 by
the Peninsula Conflict Resolution Center for his work to prevent and
eliminate bullying.
Internationally, Ted joined with clients in helping to launch Floating
Doctors in 2009. Floating Doctors works with the indigenous
Ngable-Bugle Indians of Panama with medical care, health education
and emergency response in remote community based outposts.
Projects have been created in a region where few other services
exist. These people live on small islands, along jungle river systems
and mangrove swamps without electricity, clean water and medical
care. Floating Doctors has served over 50,000 free patients visits.
We salute Ted in his contributions and the differences he has made in so many lives. He truly defies gravity in all that he has created and accomplished locally and abroad.
The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Activities League is proud to honor Ted Hannig with the Defying Gravity Award.

Defying Gravity Business Award
My name is Stephanie Vazquez. I am a 2014
Graduate from Half Moon Bay High School.
High school was the most difficult stage of my
life due to school, home, and work stress.
The Sheriff’s Activities League (SAL) Leadership
Program has been a huge help to me, both
with personal and school problems. I managed
to leave all the stress aside and graduate from
high school. The advisor’s from SAL taught me
the value of being responsible and independent.
Being involved in SAL for about 6 to 8 years has
really helped me develop communication skills
and presentations for school projects in front of
an audience.
I wanted others to know about my great SAL
experience, those who could benefit from the
same thing I was taught. I knew my two cousin’s
Pedro and Alejandro needed help. They both
were going down the wrong path and hanging
out with the “wrong crowd”. They seemed
to never complete anything, especially when
it came to school work. As soon as anything
became the least bit difficult, they would give
up. Thankfully, the SAL program helped them
turn around. They are now doing way better with
their school work and not giving up whenever
they hit a road block. They are still in the SAL
Teen Leadership program which has given
them hope and a healthier future.
I try and encourage others to become part of the
community, not just by living in the community,
but by actually making their community united
and safe!
Currently, I’m attending Canada Community
College and working full time at Half Moon Bay
Flowers. My goal is to transfer to Sonoma State
to get my Master’s Degree in Medical Assisting.
After accomplishing my goal of having a
Master’s Degree in Medical Assisting, I plan on
traveling around the world and give medical
attention to those in need. My main goal is to
help those who need medical attention but can’t
seem to afford it or get it.
The SAL Youth of the Year is awarded to a SAL Alumni that exemplifies the successes of their life while being a SAL member.
Sheriff’s Activities League
Youth of the YearStephanie Vazquez
The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Activities League is proud to honor Stephanie Vazquez.
Deputy Chase has been with the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office
for over 3 years. He has been in law enforcement for 29 years. As a
member of the Sheriff’s Office School Resource Unit, Deputy Chase
is working among the many diverse and geographically challenged
communities of the Coastside as his primary focus. He is also
supporting his partner School Resource Officers in Redwood City,
San Carlos, and Millbrae. Through his efforts it is easy to recognize
that Deputy Chase focuses his primary functions on developing
leaders among our youth and to aid them in overcoming the
contemporary youthful challenges seen in so many neighborhoods.
In 2013 Deputy Chase noticed that a small but significant portion
of the Cabrillo Unified School District appeared to be underserved
by many community based organizations and the youth were
unappreciated for their growth and efforts. The school district
accomplishments among the “continuation” high school students
were admirable, but community understanding needed a boost. With
the leadership of Deputy Chase, the student body of the Pilarcitos
High School formed a mentoring program on the coast.
Deputy Chase saw the value in having the students from Pilarcitos
help the younger and impressionable Cunha Middle School students
deal with many of the issues and choices that the younger students
would inevitably face as they grew older. With the assistance of the
Pilarcitos students the younger students are given an opportunity
to develop their self-esteem. This in turn gave more growth and
leadership abilities to the Pilarcitos students who were now being
used as an asset to building a better community. For many years
the Pilarcitos students were ignored and sometimes avoided due
to past behaviors. The leadership developed through helping
their younger counterparts increased the Pilarcitos students’ self-
esteem and made many feel that they could be a community asset
if given the care and guidance they needed. Deputy Chase diligence and
continuous efforts were the primary driving force for this success. The
program also engages Pilarcitos students in their community in other
areas. Having a leadership role with positive outcomes has change the
perception of many residents on the coast towards the continuation high
school students.
Several of the Pilarcitos students were recently selected as speakers
at the annual Coastside Youth Summit as leaders and contributors:
showcasing their pride and value. The student and adult attendees
recognized their own shift in perception of the Pilarcitos students and
commented on the positive growth they displayed.
Deputy Chase also saw the need for the youth, at the Moonridge Housing
Development, to improve their reading and comprehension. He started
the SAL Literacy Program giving these 1st – 3rd graders the opportunity
to reach their appropriate reading level.
Deputy Chase has developed and implemented many new SAL programs
that focus the need of the youth in our communities. Most recently, he
started an Empowering Girls mentoring program that helps young girls
with the issues that they face in today’s society.
Deputy Chase continues to make life changing difference to youth in
the county while building the bond between deputies and kids. Through
his efforts, he was able to prove that even though young people will be
challenged by environment, peers, and the lure of gang life: an involved
adult that cares can help overcome those challenges..
The San Mateo County SAL Deputy of the Year Award recognizes outstanding community service by a deputy over and above what is required as part of that deputy’s normal duties and functions.
The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Activities League is proud to honor Deputy Shawn Chase.

San Mateo County. Each year the number of youth served
continues to grow.
San Mateo County Sheriff’s Activities League (SAL) is a community-based organization that was founded in 1997
by the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office. The mission of SAL is to build positive partnerships between youth, deputies and communities through safe, affordable, purposeful programs that make a difference.
San Mateo County SAL provides programs for over 3,500 children per year to youth 5 to 18 years old.

The San Mateo County SAL Chapters offer a variety of mentoring based programs to the youth of our communities. Each SAL chapter provides programs based on resources and community need and therefore programs offered are tailored to each of the SAL chapters. These programs include:
ACADEMICSTruancy, tutoring and homework clubs and many more programs to assist youth with academic success. These programs are taught by staff and volunteers.
ATHLETICSStreet Hockey league, volleyball, basketball, flag football, soccer leagues, lunch time sports programs and a mobile recreation van.

TEEN LEADERSHIP COUNCIL (TLC)Teen Leadership Council (TLC) teaches teens leadership skills using the Stanford University Gardner Center YELL Curriculum. We aren’t born with leadership skills—we learn them. We become empowered; empowered to lead, to participate, to collaborate, to do the things that allow us to make a positive impact in our lives, in our communities, in our families and in our schools. The TLC program also participates in community service projects to give back to their communities.
STEM Sceince/Technology/Engineering/MathematicsThe STEM program teaches various topics including Robotics (Engineering/Software Programming); Scratch Programming; Creating a STEM website; movie making with iPads. The program goal is to empower the students in our target communities with the concepts, skills and habits of mind that will enable them to excel at Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. In addition the goal is to inspire the students to pursue studies and future careers involving these disciplines.
SPECIAL EVENTSSAL organizes school assemblies on Drug Education and Awareness, Character Counts, Driving while Distracted, Bullying and Internet Safety. Festivals, as well as community movie nights, SAL Play Streets, parent workshops, Citizen’s Academy, community service projects and many more.
MENTORING
It has been demonstrated that a trusting relationship with a caring adult can have a life-changing effect on a young person. Mentees form valuable relationships with a mentoring adult who will provide new and constructive learning experiences that can help youth stay away from gangs, drugs and negative lifestyles. The SAL Mentoring programs vary from 1:1, low ratio and group mentoring programs.
San Mateo County Sheriff’s Activities League
SAL Healthy Kids Healthy Kids was created for children in need of nutrition education, fitness education, and physical activity. This program is designed to work with the SMC Star/Academicos, along with other sports/recreational programs, teaching youth and families nutrition, healthy cooking, bullying prevention and character development.
The Healthy Kids program has three basic components: Eat Right, Get Active and Target Mentoring. The first component of the Eat Right component focuses on nutrition education to both of the parents and the kids. This education is done through parent nutrition series, parent/child cooking classes and youth nutrition classes.
The second component is Get Active. Get Active promotes youth (and their families) to become more physically active through a variety of programs. This component includes the SMC Star/ Academicos competitive soccer programs, SAL Programs, Fitness challenges, and family community service activities/special events that are physical in nature.
The third component is Target Mentoring. Targeted Mentoring which provides case management and assigned health coaches to those youth that can use a little extra help when it comes to staying on track with their nutritional eating and exercise programs.
CHEERLEADING - CODE THREEThe SAL cheerleading programs offers youth 8-15 a comphrehensive program that includes competitive cheer with fitness, academics and leadership. They compete in 3-4 cheer competitions per year.
VID KIDS - Media in MotionYouth grades 6th – 12th will learn final cut pro, producing, scriptwriting, cinematography, sound, cameras and directing to produce a news magazine webcast. They will learn all aspects of producing a webcast that features stories, interviews, special interest segments and commercials. The end product will be a webcast magazine that will be aired on various community channels in San Mateo County.
YOUTH DIVERSIONYouth diversion programs are provided to decrease the number of juvenile offenders entering the juvenile justice system. The Youth Diversion Program works in partnership with the community policing unit to deliver quality programs to assist youth to make positive changes in their lives and at the same time to take responsibility for their actions. Juveniles who successfully complete this program stay out of the Juvenile Justice System.
TATTOO REMOVAL PROGRAMThe goal of the program is to remove gang related tattoos from individuals that have shown that they have decided to change their lives. This program is in collaboration with Redwood City Police, SMCO Probation and Redwood City PAL.

Building the bond between deputy and kids!
The San Mateo County STAR FC (SAL) soccer program was originally formed as SAL Académicos in 1998 not just as Soccer Club, but a community strategy that’s members and families give back to their community, maintain good academic standing, receive leadership training and become role models to the younger recreational leagues that the SAL program oversees in San Mateo County.
In 2013 the program evolved into the SMC STAR FC (SAL) program, a collaborative program between participating soccer clubs and the Sheriffs Activities League to utilize the sport of soccer as a vehicle to promote academic excellence,
healthy choices, youth leadership and community involvement with the overall intent to enable participating youth of all ages and abilities to reach their highest potential
It provides a wide variety of soccer programs for every player at every age and skill level. The program includes the SAL school lunchtime soccer programs, recreational soccer leagues, Little All Star soccer programs, clinics, team camps, local competitive soccer teams, regional competitive soccer teams, and a national competitive soccer program as a member of the United States Soccer Federation Academy program.
SMC STAR FC SAL SOCCER PROGRAMThe most unique aspect of the program is the “More than Soccer” programs that are offered to the youth participating in SMC STAR. These program include but are not limited to: tutoring and literacy programs; case management and counsleing; nutrition, leadership and decision making workshops for youth and their families; community service opportunities; community garden and Life After STAR - a college track program.
The program currently serves over 2,000 youth per year in all programs. Over 250 play in year round competitive soccer leagues.
