Anyone who has been to our Chestnut Street House lately has more than likely noticed some big changes underway, with the clearing of the two lots of land next door, and the busy workers in hard hats now making daily appearances. The reason for these changes is that we are making some room. In fact, when we are done, there will be a total of 111 rooms there.
Each year, the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House serves hundreds of families with seriously ill children. Unfortunately, with the size of our current facility, we cannot accommodate every family who needs our support. But, to make more room in our House, we must make room in our hearts.
Construction to more than double our capacity on Chestnut Street is now underway. This historic project will enable us to go from serving 800 families annually, to an estimated 1,900, and will increase our available room nights from 16,000 to more than 40,000 per year.
“Our House was the first Ronald McDonald House in the world, opening in West Philadelphia 43 years ago,” says Executive Director Susan Campbell. “We’ve learned a lot in our first four decades. We’ve spent countless hours reviewing industry research, and speaking with families about what makes our House special—and what could make it even better. All of that has been poured into this expansion, and I am so excited for what we are building.”
Our families are excited, too. At the construction groundbreaking on June 28, David Kane shared his experience at the House and how the expansion will impact other families like his:
“We first came here after our unborn son was diagnosed with spina bifida and my wife, Amanda, underwent fetal surgery. We were so grateful to have a place to stay for the three months that Amanda was recovering and on bed rest awaiting Andrew’s birth.
“For the first two months, Amanda and I stayed without our daughter. During that time, we enjoyed nightly meals and weekend breakfasts with the other families. At the end of Amanda’s pregnancy, Natalie joined us, and then we learned about everything else offered here— pet therapy, arts and craft nights, music therapy, and more.
“Someone asked me recently what the House meant to us. It gave us a sense of calm in the storm that we were going through. We made friends with so many other families, and we supported each other. At dinner we came together to find out how our families were doing, and to offer support when things weren’t going well.
“Our time here meant so much to us, and other guest families that I met felt the same way. We are so proud to be part of this next chapter— this amazing expansion—because so many more families like ours will receive that support and friendship.”
This expansion will allow us to do even more for families like the Kanes. And through expanding our House, we strengthen our community. The impact of expansion will be felt well beyond the walls of our House, providing employment during and after construction and contributing to the ongoing neighborhood revitalization.
To make all of this possible, the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House is launching the most ambitious fundraising campaign in its history. The Room in Our Hearts campaign aims to raise $50M by December 2019 to complete this building project and to establish a well of support to sustain daily operations now and in the future.
Every gift to Room in Our Hearts will help us meet our ultimate goal: ensuring that families with seriously ill children have easier access to care, suffer fewer financial burdens, and receive the critical psycho-social support that enables them to preserve normalcy in their lives.

MESSAGES OF HOPE SPECIAL EXPANSION EDITION
The Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House Is Making Room
2
On a picture-perfect, sunny, beautiful afternoon this summer, the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House took a major step forward in continuing the vision of Jimmy Murray and Dr. Audrey Evans. The June 28 event, which celebrated the groundbreaking of an historic building project on Chestnut Street, represented the culmination of years of dedication on the part our staff, volunteers, board members, and the extraordinary generosity of donors and business partners.
I am thrilled to announce that construction is officially underway on a much-awaited expansion project to dramatically increase our ability to serve families with seriously ill children.
This would not have been possible without the support of a great many individuals and organizations, but I would especially like to recognize Jill and Alan B. Miller, who generously provided the lead gift to make this all possible. I would also like to recognize and thank our key partners EwingCole (architect), P. Agnes (construction), Pennoni (civil engineering), David Chou & Associates (structural engineering), and Watchdog (project management). Their ongoing creativity and commitment to this project has been essential in turning our vision into a reality. And, on behalf of the entire Board of Directors, I want to thank all of our business partners and supporters involved with this critical project.
As you will read in the coming pages, while we have now started construction, we are far from finished. To complete the project and create a foundation of support to maintain our facilities and sustain our daily operations, we have launched the Room in Our Hearts campaign. As of this writing, we have raised $32 million against our $50 million campaign goal. As you are reading the details of what our amazing new House will include, I hope you will consider how you might participate in closing that gap.
We will continue to share updates on our progress in this publication, as well as through other mail and email communications. In the meantime, save the dates for our Champions of Hope Awards on October 11, and our biggest-ever Show Your Stripes event on October 13. And, please visit philarmh.org/MakeRoom for more details or to make a gift in support of the expansion project today.
What we do at the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House has an immeasurable impact on families facing the most difficult challenge anyone can ever encounter: caring for a child with a serious illness.
I invite you to help us serve even more families by supporting the Room in Our Hearts campaign.
My warmest wishes,
Peter J. DegnanBoard President
MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT
Peter J. Degnan President of the Board, 2017
We are grateful to United Health Services (UHS) for supporting our families as Guest Chefs at the Chestnut Street House twice over the last several months. Our families loved both the Super Hero themed dinner and the “Night at the Movies.” UHS went above and beyond by decorating every corner of the kitchen, dressing up according to the themes, and providing delicious meals. Thank you!

On June 28, more than 300 Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House families, friends, and neighbors helped celebrate the historic groundbreaking of our new expansion on Chestnut Street. The event was opened with a welcome from former Philadelphia Eagles Coach Dick Vermeil. It included congratulatory remarks from Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney, PRMH Board President Peter Degnan, and Capital Campaign Chair Marlene Weinberg. Susan Campbell, PRMH Executive Director, proudly introduced Madeline Bell, President and CEO of our Legacy Partner, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and Jill Miller, PRMH Board Member and Tower Benefactor. Their remarks brought smiles and excitement for the new Jill and Alan B. Miller Tower and other components of the largest construction project in the House’s history.
The Kane Family—former guests featured in this newsletter—shared their eager anticipation of the expansion project, and thanked all in attendance who helped make it possible. The event was generously sponsored by Yards Brewing Company, and DiBruno Bros., who provided the afternoon’s food and refreshments.

WE’RE MAKING ROOM
THE EXPANSION PROJECT ON CHESTNUT STREET
Each year, the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House provides housing, food, and comfort to hundreds of families with seriously ill children. We know that by allowing families to stay near the medical care their child needs, we are helping parents and caregivers focus on what matters most—taking care of their seriously ill children. Unfortunately, we are limited by the size of our current facility and we cannot accommodate many families who seek our support.
After years of research and thoughtful planning, the construction on a new eight-story building and significant renovations to our existing facilities are now underway. This historic construction project will ultimately more than double our capacity to house, feed, and nurture families through social and other support services.
Each floor in our new tower will feature sixteen comfortably appointed guest bedrooms, two of which will be wheelchair accessible.
5
WE’RE MAKING ROOM CONTINUED
Once complete, the new and improved Chestnut Street House will include:
• A new 93,000-sq.-ft. tower that will house 88 bedrooms
• A new Welcome Center and Reception Area to greet families to the PRMH community
• A newly constructed Cooking and Dining Center
• Library and Quiet Lounges on each floor
• 80 new family bedrooms, and 8 protected-patient bedroom suites
• 12 fully wheelchair-accessible guest bedrooms
• Indoor and outdoor play areas for children of all ages
• A beautiful rooftop garden, featuring a walking path and quiet reflection areas
This project is made possible thanks to the generous support of private individuals and organizations through the Room in Our Hearts campaign. For more details on the expansion and all that it will include, or to support Room in Our Hearts, please visit www.philarmh.org/MakeRoom.
Dedicated outdoor space can be incomparably therapeutic for patients and families. The new rooftop garden and outdoor
dining areas will be transformational additions to our house.
This signature feature of the renovation and expansion plan will offer beautiful and tranquil outdoor seating for
sunny day meals, and a restaurant-quality Grilling Station for our guest chefs year-round.
Our new dining and cooking center will include a fully equipped, residential-style family kitchen, a commercial-grade guest chef kitchen, seating for up to 175 individuals, and an all-ages play area for patients, siblings, and their friends.

BOARD SPOTLIGHT: JILL MILLER, TOWER BENEFACTOR
Tell us about yourself.
My husband Alan and I have raised three amazing children in this community—Marc, Marni, and Abby. We feel very fortunate to be able to give back to the community that has been so good to us, through working with organizations like the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House.
How did your relationship with the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House begin?
My involvement at the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House began in the mid-nineties, when I volunteered there every Wednesday afternoon. I must admit that I was a little nervous at first, concerned that it might be an emotionally challenging atmosphere. It was absolutely the opposite—it was an uplifting experience— as everyone who has worked there, or just visited, knows.
What was your favorite aspect of working at the House?
My favorite thing to do as a volunteer was to welcome new families. They are often very nervous when they come in. As I showed them around, though, I could see their tension lessening. They were so relieved to know that they would be living in this incredible house during the most difficult time in their lives.
What was the hardest aspect of volunteering?
The most challenging part of volunteering was having to tell callers that we were sorry because we could not accommodate them as the House was full. Although we would try to help them make other arrangements, it just wasn’t the same.
What prompted you and your husband to name the Jill and Alan B. Miller Tower?
The Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House is an extraordinary place and the expansion of the Chestnut Street House has been a long time coming. Alan and I are glad to be major donors to help this happen, and are proud to have the new tower named for us. We hope future volunteers will not to have to tell so many families that we are full!

Chris Callanan, Director of Events and Corporate Development, at [email protected] or 267-969-6212.
The Adopt A Family Room partnership program allows you, your company, or your organization to be the sponsor of a Ronald McDonald Family Room at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia or St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children. Your funding will sponsor all of the families who will benefit from the amenities of the Family Room of your choice during a specific month of the year.
Sponsors will have prominent signage in the Family Room selected. In addition, both Family Rooms offer meal sponsorships, giving you the opportunity to provide a nutritious meal to families during a very difficult time in their lives.
The Adopt A Room partnership program allows individuals, companies or organizations to sponsor one of the guest rooms at our two houses, providing a warm place to sleep for all of the families who will stay in that room throughout the year.
Sponsors can choose to exclusively sponsor a room or adopt a partial room that will be split between two donors. All sponsors will have their name or company name prominently displayed outside of their adopted room and will be displayed on a banner hung in our Houses.
Individuals can also Adopt A Family by sending in a donation that underwrites the family’s stay at the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House for a specific time period.

Honoring J. Drew Coyle’s 36 Years of ServiceThe Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House co-founders, board members, staff, and volunteers came together with family and friends to celebrate and honor J. Drew Coyle. The Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House and the many families who have been served appreciate Drew for his 36 years of service. Drew was the Chair of the Property Committee and an active board member from 1991 until May of 2017.
During his tenure, the board oversaw the development and growth of the organization and its programs. This included the addition of the U.S. Healthcare Center building to the House at Chestnut Street and the construction of the second House at Front & Erie. In addition, Drew created the “Share A Night” annual fundraiser, which encouraged donors to give on an annual basis during the holidays. The program has been replicated in many other Houses throughout the world, raising substantial funds for each location. Coyle served the House as a long-time volunteer and received the Volunteer of the Year Award in 2007. PRMH is grateful for Drew’s commitment to its programs and the families of seriously ill children.
A few rain showers didn’t stop participants from hitting the links at our 17th Annual Hit `Em for the House Golf Event. Participants had a blast and the event was a great success, raising over $170,000. Thank you to all participants and sponsors.
Thank you to the team from the Richie Nelson Celebration of Life Golf Outing for supporting PRMH again this year. We are grateful for your continued partnership and to the 100 golfers who participated. This year’s event raised $68,000 for the House.
