Abstract
In this review, several aspects of artificial gemstones from glasses have been addressed from
the advantages, the fabrication process, the coloration, their properties and finally the use of
RHA as the glass former for the simulant gemstones. The silica sources for preparation of
glasses were locally obtained from sand and biomass ashes in Thailand. The refractive index,
density and hardness values of the glass gemstones reported in these researches had been
meet the standard of EU-regulation for crystal. The glass gemstones were fabricated in a
variety of colors with some special features such as color changing when exposed under
different light sources. Moreover, glass filled ruby has been studied and optimized their
enhancement condition. The developments of high refractive index lead-free glasses for
gemstone research are also leave non-toxically impact to our environment.

Structure–Properties–Function Relationship of Some Oxide
Catalysts and Photocatalysts
Hadi Nur
Ibnu Sina Institute for Scientific and Industrial Research, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia,

Abstract
In this fast changing time, the development of high performance and conceptually innovative
catalytic processes is crucial for chemical industries. It is generally accepted that
heterogeneous catalysis is an important process in the transformation of energy, which is
considered as an integral part of the solution of today’s and the future’s energy problems.
Here, an attempt will be made to introduce several catalytic reactions in order to design a
better catalyst through chemical design. The catalytic reactions that will be discussed are the
oxidation and acid catalysis, and photocatalysis by solid catalysts. These works are classified
into six classes, namely phase-boundary catalysis, acid catalysis, oxidation catalyst,
bifunctional catalyst, photocatalyst and shape controllable synthesis of solid catalyst-assisted
by the magnetic field. Hopefully, the structure-catalytic properties of these several designs of
the heterogeneous catalytic system may assist in the further search for novel approaches to
heterogeneous catalysis for an environmentally-benign transformation of biomass and
organic compounds. However, the demonstration of the structure–photocatalytic and –
catalytic activities relationship remains a challenge today.

Abstract
The performance of multilayer ceramic chip capacitors (MLCs) and other dielectric
applications was progressing by shrinking the dimensions of the individual components and
packing more components in the same area. Since these electronic devices commonly contain
some metallic conductors (i.e. MLCs internal electrodes) such as Au, Ag or Ni. Hence, the
influence of any possible metallic debris or nanoparticles on the properties of the dielectrics,
thereby affecting the reliability of the high volumetric MLCs and then the whole devices,
might be one of the issues to be taken into consideration upon their further miniaturization.
Here, nanoparticles of gold (AuNPs) reinforced BT ceramics were fabricated by using simple
solid-state/pressureless sintering methods without any binders. Apart from their
environmental friendly, these nanocomposites are expected to synergistically combine the
properties of both the ferroelectric BT and the conductive gold nanoparticle, which could
exhibit dielectric properties that are better than those of pure BT ceramics. By using a
combination of several characterization techniques, the results indicate that using different
sintering temperature or gold nanoparticle amounts to produce the ceramics greatly affect the
dielectric, microstructure and domain switching behavior of the materials.

Abstract
The Eu3+
- ions doped on phosphate, silicate and borate glasses were fabricated by
conventional melt quenching technique to study its spectroscopic and luminescence
properties for solid state laser device applications. The characteristic intense red emission
peak at 613 nm corresponding to the 5D0 →
7F2 transition of Eu
3+ ions is being topic of
interest to understand their behavior in different glass samples. Addition of Gd3+
ions as co-
doping with Eu3+
doped glasses leads additional energy levels between ground state of Gd3+
8S7/2 to excited state of
6PJ suggesting as a sensitizer to accommodate more room for other
Ln3+
ions for energy transfer mechanism. Among the rare earth ions, the trivalent europium
(Eu3+
) is an important activator and special for understanding the site symmetry around the
rare-earth and also it provides an additional information of Phonon energy which is vital to
understand their phonon relaxation rates. More over the simple electronic structure with a
non-degenerate 7F0 ground state and intense luminescence from the excited
5D0 state to lower
ground state 7F0 make Eu
3+ ion is the best option for analyzing the interaction of the ion with
the local field effect. Eu3+
ions are special rare-earth as they get populated easily to 7F0 and
7F1 levels above the ground state at room temperature which makes researchers to extensively
study their behavior by eliminating their thermal effects using thermal correction method.
