ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
The theme of this conference is the “Recent advances in Statistics and Data Science for Sustainable
Development” in recognition of the advent of Statistics and Data Science. This conference plans to provide a
forum for interaction and knowledge sharing among academicians, data analysts, practitioners, researchers and
students in the domain of both Statistics and Data Science. It provides a platform to present their research
findings in the frontier areas of statistics and data science. The topics covered in the conferences are timely
and have great impact on data sciences, identifying important directions for future research, promoting
advanced statistical methods in big data science, and facilitating future collaborations across disciplines and
between theory and practice. Critical data for global, regional and national development policy making are still
lacking. Making good use of big data will require collaboration of various factors including researchers, data
scientists and practitioners. The target of hosting the conference is to make a rendezvous of statistical
researchers to explore their remarkable contribution and journey through new vistas of the advances in
Statistics and Data Sciences.

and celebrating its Platinum Jubilee. In this occasion the department would like to host the ISPS, 2019
annual conference at Utkal University.
ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Post Graduate Department of Statistics is one of the oldest and leading departments of the Utkal
University. The Department of Statistics was established way back in 1958 and flourished under the
guidance of late Prof. Bama Charan Das and Late Dr. Chakradhar Mishra. Late Prof. Sadhu Charan Das,
had the distinction and privilege of being its first Head. Subsequently, Prof. J. Sarangi (Ph.D., University
of Alberta, Canada) steered the Department to a new height. Prof. A.K.P.C. Swain, Late Prof. I.S. Rao,
Prof. L.N. Sahoo, Prof. G. Mishra, Prof. B.K. Pradhan & Prof. P.K. Tripathy were the distinguished
faculty primarily responsible for leading the Department to its present status. The Department in its 60-
year span of existence has enriched the society by producing very distinguished academicians,
researchers, administrators, entrepreneurs and so on and so forth.
Currently, the department has four regular faculty members, Prof. K. B. Panda, Dr. P. R. Dash, Dr. R. K.
Sahoo and Dr. P. K. Swain. The department now offers MA/M.Sc., M.Phil., and Ph.D. courses in
Statistics and also one self-financing course viz. M.Tech.(IT). The thrust areas of the research are;
Survey sampling, Demography, Stochastic modelling, Operations Research, Biostatistics and Survival
Analysis. .
ABOUT LOCATION/ SIGHTSEEING
Bhubaneswar is the capital of the Indian state of Odisha. It is the centre of economic and cultural
importance in Eastern India. Historically, it was often depicted as Ekamra Kshetra. With the diverse
ranges of heritage resources, it showcases significant sacred cultural landscape components which have
evolved with the support of available natural resource base and cultural trigger. It is in the eastern coastal
plains, along the axis of the Eastern Ghats mountains. The city has an average altitude of 45 m
(148 ft) above sea level. The city is bounded by the Daya River to the south and the Kuakhai River to
the east; the Chandaka Wildlife Sanctuary and Nandankanan Zoo lie in the western and northern parts of
Bhubaneswar, respectively. Bhubaneswar is often referred to as a ‘Temple City of India’ and with Puri
and Konark, it forms a ‘Golden Triangle’, one of eastern India’s most visited destination. The city is
well connected to major parts of the country by air, rail and road. Winter season will be in force during
conference days and temperature will vary between 150C to 250C.
ABOUT INDIAN SOCIETY FOR PROBABILITY AND STATISTICS (ISPS)
Eminent scholars belonging to the disciplines of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences laid the foundation for the
origin of Indian Society for Theory of Probability and its Applications (ISTPA) when they met in Sri
Venkateshwara University in 1980. In the same year, the draft constitution of the Society was drawn up during the
deliberation of the Conference held at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay. Later, in 1981, it was
registered in Bombay with its official address at the Department of Mathematics, IIT, Bombay. The Society was
renamed as Indian Society for Probability and Statistics (ISPS) in 1985. It has attracted many researchers and
scholars for enrolment as life members over the years and presently, the strength has crossed 1000. The society
takes every effort to enhance this number inviting young faculty, research scholars and students of Statistics across
the country. ISPS publishes the Journal and News Letter annually.
Annual Convention/Conference/Workshop/Symposium of ISPS is being organized every year in one of the
reputed national universities where the Department of Statistics exists. The events in every conference/convention
include memorial lectures, endowment lectures, invited talks, presentation of research papers for the award of
Young Statistician and presentation of contributory research papers. ISPS Life Time Achievement Award has been
instituted and is being presented to an eminent personality in recognition of his/her scholarly contributions to the
development of Statistics.
CALL FOR PAPERS
The organizers invite original and unpublished research papers from students/research scholars, academicians and
industry experts to present their work in the specialized areas of Statistics and Data science. The abstract of
contributed papers should be focused on the items such as objective of the study, methodology, research findings,
significance and scope of the study. There will be a review on the abstracts by experts and selection of the paper is
based on the recommendations of the experts committee. The interested delegates are requested to submit the soft
copy of abstract at [email protected] before the scheduled date in the following forms:
