Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, the Peter’s Pence Collection (taking place June 25-26, 2016) is an opportunity to become a witness of charity to those who suffer most. Pope Francis has encouraged us to “open our eyes and see the misery of the world, the wounds of our brothers and sisters who are denied their dignity, and let us recognize that we are compelled to heed their cry for help!” (Misericordiae Vultus, [MV] no. 15). Through the Peter’s Pence Collection, we stand in solidarity with Catholics all over the world to support the charitable works of our Holy Father, Pope Francis.
Contributions to this collection support him as he reaches out to those suffering the effects of war and violence, natural disasters, and religious persecution. Pope Francis has told us that “mercy is the force that reawakens us to new life and instills in us the courage to look to the future with hope” (MV, no. 10). Please prayerfully consider participating in this collection and becoming a witness of charity, a force of mercy that reaches out to those around the world. Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon, Bishop of Joliet Please use the envelope provided in your packet of envelopes for this collection or an envelope marked “Peter’s Pence.” There will NOT be a second collection.

When a youngster says, “I dare you,” there is pressure to accept the dare. When the youngster says, “I double dare you,” the dare simply cannot be refused. If we wish to be saved, we must hear Jesus’ teaching in this gospel as a double dare; we simply must, as disciples, deny self, take up our daily cross, lose our life for the sake of others. In honest prayer we stand before God, stripped of false self-images and misleading life goals. In prayer we come to know who we are as Jesus’ disciples and
accept the demands of following him faithfully. In prayer we encounter the God who never forsakes us, who strengthens us to face our daily crosses, and who encourages us to be faithful. Dare we pray? How can we not? Dare we ask Jesus, “Who do you say that I am?” Why would we not? Source: Living Liturgy 2016, Liturgical Press

Men of St. Philip the Apostle Parish! Do you want to change your lives?
Do you want to make a difference for the Lord? The Knights of Columbus are looking for the next generation of men to put their
faith into action and grow with their faith. For the next few weeks, we will share with you some interesting facts you may not know about the Knights of Columbus! For example, did
you know that the Knights of Columbus responded immediately to the September 11 attacks? We raised and
donated over 1.4 million dollars to the widows of the emergency personnel who died that day, and we are also
paying for their children’s Catholic college educations. For more information about the Knights of Columbus, please
contact Mike Bruntz at [email protected] or 708-415-7719 or Jack Ochocinski at [email protected] or 630-620-1190.
Father’s Day Mass Intentions for 2016/2017 The following fathers will be included in monthly Mass intentions for the next year. Our apologies for any errors;
please call 630-543-1754 or e-mail [email protected] to record any corrections or omissions.

Today we celebrate fathers. As I think about the traditions of this day, I realize
that any gift I gave my father was merely a token. What my father gave to me, without expecting much in return, has lasted throughout my life. For those of us who no longer have our father here to celebrate Father’s Day, the day is more about honoring the memories. I remember the Scrabble games we played and the conversations we shared—priceless gifts of love that are always with me. The coffee cups and ties are long gone and, as a father now, I realize that the greatest gift my children and grandchildren can give to me is the same gift I wish to give to them—time.
On this day that honors fathers across the country, let us give our living fathers and those men who have been like fathers to us the gift that never gets lost, a day of love and memories shared. For those of us who no longer have our father’s physical presence, let us share with our families the memories we have of our fathers. A father’s love is special and never departs.

What questions do you have about the Catholic faith? Please send your questions to Carol Schubert by calling 630-628-0900 x104 or e-mailing [email protected]. Is the world a product of chance? No. God, not chance, is the cause of the world. Neither in its origin nor with respect to its intrinsic order and purposefulness is it the product of factors working “aimlessly.” [295-301,317-318, 320] Christians believe that they can read God’s handwriting in his creation. To scientists who talk about the whole world as a
random, meaningless, and aimless process, Pope John Paul II pointed out in reply in 1985, “Given a universe in which there is such a complex organization of its elements and such a wonderful purposefulness in its life, talking about chance would be equivalent to giving up the search for an explanation of the world as it appears to us. In fact it would be tantamount to accepting effects without cause. It would be an abdication of human reason, which in this way would be refusing to think and to search for a solution to problems.” Who created the world? God alone, who is beyond time and space, created the world out of nothing and called all things into being. Everything that exists depends on God and continues in being only because God wills it to be. [290-292, 316] The creation of the world is, so to speak, a “community project” of the Trinitarian God. The Father is the Creator, the Almighty. The Son is the meaning and heart of the world: “All things were created through him and for him” (Col 1:16). We find out what the world is good for only when we come to know Christ and understand that the world is heading for a destination: the truth, goodness, and beauty of the Lord. The Holy Spirit holds everything together; he is the one “that gives life” (Jn 6:63).
