designer of the first production helicopter and the original Vespa
SPONSORSHIP PROPOSAL FOR THE GLOBAL EXHIBITION TOUR OF
CORRADINO D’ASCANIO
Corradino d'Ascanio (Popoli, 1891 - Pisa, 1981), the pioneer of vertical flight (his helicopter, in 1930,
beat in Ciampino all records of the category) and inventor of the variable pitch (which revolutionized the
aviation industry), known to world as the brilliant father of the Vespa, the best-selling scooter in the
world, a true icon of Made in Italy and a successful example of timeless style, was also,
When, in 1945, in the midst of the Second World War, Enrico Piaggio entrusted him with the design of a
new two-wheeled vehicle capable of re-launching the Italian mobility after the wartime destructions (“a
motorbike for everyone”), he took up the challenge and “reconverted” his skills of aeronautical engineer
to the new demands, giving life with just a few quick pencil strokes to Vespa, whose patent was filed in
Florence in April 1946, handing its inventor (and its company) to the history of mobility and industrial
design.

THE EXHIBITION
The Exhibition, organized by Piaggio Foundation of Piaggio Group and was on display at the Piaggio
Museum in Pontedera from Nov. 2011 to Feb. 2014 with great success.
It is a veritable journey through the history of creation, evolution and success to discover the world of
this extraordinary inventor, industrial designer and aeronautical engineer.
The exhibition is an homage to the man who, with a small idea, was able to revolutionise, not only the
development of a company like Piaggio, but also the lifestyle of several generations, delivering Vespa
and its parent company their fate of becoming symbols of Italian Excellence and Virtuosity in the world.

THE EXHIBITION CATALOGUE
The catalogue of the exhibition has been designed as a monographic publication on Corradino
D'Ascanio, with more than 200 pictures and a rich documentary appendix.
The catalogue at the exhibition at Piaggio Museum included a preface for each section. For Man a text
by his niece Maria d'Ascanio; for Genius a text by the famous designer Giorgetto Giugiaro; for Magician
a text by the Director of the Sidecar Museum Costantino Frontalini, who has studied the special vehicles
created by D'Ascanio for fairs and exhibitions; friend or Legend a text by Donatella Puliga,
anthropologist, on “legend-man and legend-machine”.
Each section is enhanced by a selection of photographs and documents from the Historical Archive of
Piaggio, from the State Archive in Pescara, from the archive of the family d’Ascanio and from other
private archives.
On the basis of this original structure, on the occasion of subsequent exhibitions, the catalogue can be
customized and adapted to any requirements suggested by the exhibitor.
The catalogue will be published according to the highest quality standards in order to be able to have a
publication that acts as the editorial instrument for the Exhibition and monographic publication, in
coordination with the exhibitor and the Piaggio Foundation. The volume, size 24.0 x 28.0 cm, will consist
of approximately 200 pages printed in full colour, with a 5-colour cover and matt plastic coating.
