Casenos del Pa IS VascoThe exposition is a sample of the architecture found inthe type of traditional Basque dwelling known as theCaserio Vasco, and is suggestive of the strength,enthusiasm and the enterprising capacity of the Basquepeople.

The Caserio Vasco has undergone numerous variationsbetween the 16th century and our days, but has alwaysmaintained certain common elements: the ones locatedin the region of Zuberoa tend to be very austere, closed-in, lacking in ornamentation and with smooth rocks onthe facade, while the ones found in Las Encartaciones(Bizkaia) are quite open, with balconies stretching alongtheir entire length and very elaborate structures of woodand masonry found at the ends.

Although some opinions suggest otherwise, thesebuildings are not poor or popular constructions. On thecontrary, they were built with the most advancedtechniques known in each period, as demonstrated bythe manner of working the stone and the wood, two oftheir most basic elements.

The typology of the main entrance is also diverse: inregions close to the sea, due to the more mild climate,the entryway is an open space understood to be a meetingplace, while in the area of the Pyrenees, there is no suchspace.

The roof is gabled, with the ridge being perpendicular tothe facade and with a southern orientation. Here we alsofind variations: in the part of Zuberoa closer to thePyrenees, they have double slopes because of thesnowfall. In the area of Carranza, near Cantabria, theroof can have up to three slopes.

The way that the wood frameworks are treated is anothervery characteristic point that can be appreciated in thisexhibit. In Goizueta (Navarre) these works take onmaximum importance, as their construction coincidedwith times of economic plenty.

The exposition reflects all of these characteristics, helpingto broaden the visitor's understanding of this type ofconstruction as a whole.

Generally, in the oldest dwellings, the ground floor wasoccupied by the kitchen and bedrooms, separate fromthe stable area, although all these elements were in veryclose proximity. However, with the passage of time, theliving quarters came to occupy the first floor. Manyvariations exist in this format.
