Basic Principles of teaching listening skill
Let’s consider the factors that affect the way in which we listen both in L1 & FL.
• Make a list of all kinds you do in L1 & FL in your real life in pairs.
e.g. listening to friends, listening to family etc.
CPDTraining

Comparison of two techniques for teaching listening

g) SS had to think while they were listening. No Yes
h) SS listened to the text several times. No Yes
i) SS (not the teacher) gave all the answers. No Yes
j) SS had to rely on the memory to answer questions. Yes No
k) SS did more than one activity. No Yes
l) SS had to find answers to questions while they listened. No Yes
m) The SS could do the task. No Yes
n) The Lesson was interesting and motivating. No Yes
Tips for a successful listening Class
1) We understand better (R&W) if we are given some preparation and we know the topic beforehand.
2) A pre-listening activity prepares SS & helps them ‘activates’ any language and general knowledge associated with the topic.
3) In a good listening activity SS should not have to rely too much on other skills such as memory or reading but should be listening, thinking and guessing
CPDTraining
4) Ideally the way SS record their answers should be quick so they can concentrate on listening. They should not be distracted by the problems of recording answers. Examples are ticking, underlining or numbering.
5) To really develop listening skill for real life situation, SS should not be reading the text of what they hear. They must learn to rely on their ears.
