A large majority of people in the United States will be eating turkey for
Thanksgiving on November 25. Canadians had their Thanksgiving on October 11 and most probably ate some of the big birds as well. Turkeys are likely the most popular
big birds in America, but there are also other big birds worth noting;
some that are great to eat and some, not so much!
Wild turkeys are native to the Eastern United States and Northern Mexico. They were first domesticated by the Aztecs in Mexico. Related to pheasants, turkeys are the only breed of poultry native to the western hemisphere. Wild turkeys run up to 25 miles per hour (40 km/hr) and can fly short distances up to 55 miles per hour (88.5 km/hr).
Native Americans primarily raised turkeys for their feathers when they were domesticated over 1,500 years ago. The feathers were valued for their ceremonies and rituals and they used them when making blankets and robes.
Domestic turkeys that are raised for food, such as our traditional Thanksgiving meals, are too heavy to fly. They generally weigh twice that of wild turkeys.
Most wild turkeys are found in Pennsylvania, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. Some states have hunting seasons for the birds.
Another big bird, the California condor, is the largest flying bird in North America. In the 1980s, the California Condor Recovery Program started with a small group of 27 captured condors to prevent their extinction. The endangered species now has over 300 birds in the wild. A unique feature of these big birds is that they have nails similar to toenails instead of claws or talons.
California condors are vultures and definitely one of the birds we don’t want to eat! Vulture is a word that most people associate with “yuck!” They eat carrion (dead animal carcasses), so are considered part of “nature’s

SeniorNews LineOh, we’re an obstinate bunch. It seems that the older we get, the less likely we are to listen to others who have our welfare in mind. A recent study indicates a whole lot of seniors don’t want to get an annual flu shot. Some of us come up with interesting excuses not to get the shot, mostly having to do with how bad we think the flu is going to be, our general state of health and whether we’re likely to get the flu, and how well we think the shot would work if we did get one. I can tell you one very compelling reason to get the flu shot: delay of first heart attack. This information comes from another study reported in the Canadian Medical Association Journal. It says that getting a flu shot early in the season brings a 19 percent reduction in the occurrence of acute myocardial infarction. Shots received after the middle of November had a smaller reduction, but a reduction just the same. The pneumonia shot didn’t do a thing.
Consumer Reports’ health magazine also is getting into the act with a poll about why people don’t want a flu shot. One big reason cited is that last year’s flu season was a big nothing, especially because it hit younger people harder. What we need to remember, however, is that in a normal flu year, 90 percent of the deaths from flu are in the 65-and-older age group.Consider this, too: According to Consumer Reports, if you have to go to the emergency room with a twisted ankle, there’s a 50 percent chance that your nurses won’t have had a flu shot.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My house cat “Snowball” has been having problems urinating in places other than her litter box. She loves rugs, towels, my daughters’ beds, pillows and even her own bed. The vet suggested getting another litter box. She now has two. She will urinate on something within 1 foot of a litter box.I read in your column that cats that do this could have a urinary-tract infection or diabetes. Snowball was treated for six weeks for a urinary infection and still continues to urinate outside of her box. I took her back to the vet to be tested again for urinary-tract infection and diabetes. Both tests were negative. The vet thinks she’s just mad at us. I’m tired of this happening. Any suggestions? — Michelle S., via e-mailDEAR MICHELLE: There’s usually a good reason for a cat urinating regularly outside the litter box, and being “just mad” is probably not one of them. You did the right thing by having her checked and treated for a urinary tract infection, and checked for more serious diseases, so you’ve eliminated a physical issue that may have initiated the problem. Now it’s
time to address the behavioral issue — which has nothing to do with Snowball resenting you, but more to do with an association she’s formed.First, get rid of both litter boxes (yes, the new one too). Thoroughly clean the area where they were located, and then get a new box. Next, monitor Snowball closely. As soon as she starts urinating anywhere other than her box, simply pick her up and place her in the box. Use soothing, encouraging language. She may be associating the box with the pain of her urinary-tract infection, so you need to reintroduce her to it.Remember also to thoroughly clean the areas that Snowball has urinated using an enzyme cleaner developed specifically for pet cleanup. It’s available at pet stores. If she’s urinated on carpet, you may need to treat the padding underneath as well.Send your pet questions and tips to [email protected],

BIG BIRDS (continued):clean-up crew.” These amazing birds can fly up to 55 miles per hour (88 km/hr) and can climb to altitudes of 15,000 feet (4,600 m). They have a lifespan of up to 50 years.
Native Americans see the condor as a symbol of power. Calling it the thunderbird, they believe the beating of a condor’s wings will bring thunder to the skies.
Hungry for an omelet? One ostrich egg equals about two dozen chicken eggs! You’ll sure need friends to share with if you choose an ostrich egg for breakfast, and, because of its high acidity, antacids may be needed as well.
It is a myth that ostriches bury their heads in the sand. When threatened, they try to hide by lying flat on the ground or running; they can not fly. They are the fastest birds on land, capable of sprinting at 45 miles per hour (70 km/h). Their powerful, long legs can cover 10-16 feet (3-5 m) in a single stride. Their size is also impressive. Ostriches are 7-9 feet (2.1-2.7 m) tall when fully grown and weigh 220-350 pounds (100-160 kg). Like turkeys, these birds have tasty meat. Unlike turkeys, however, the meat is red and tastes more like beef. It is very low in cholesterol and fat. Ostriches are natives of Africa.
The emu is another flightless bird that has healthy red meat. It is 97 percent fat free. Emu oil is said to be the “perfect emollient” and comes from a padding of thick fat on the back of the bird, a natural protection from the extreme heat of its native homeland, Australia. Emus are the national bird of Australia and are farmed in many places for their meat and oil.
A little smaller than ostriches, emus weigh up to 150 pounds (68 kg) and stand 5-6 feet (1.5-1.8 m) tall. Emu eggs are dark green and weigh an average of 1.5 pounds (.68 kg).
Another big bird from Australia (and also New Guinea) is the cassowary. Its eggs are green-blue and
rheas lay eggs that are golden in color. Not golden, but silver in color, are the state quarters
that were minted in the United States from 1999 to 2008. The Idaho quarter released in 2007 has a peregrine falcon on it. The peregrine falcon has the ability to top 200 miles an hour (320 km/hr) when diving for prey while flying. The World Center for Birds of Prey, located in Boise, Idaho, was dedicated in 1984 to help with the conservation and protection of these magnificent big birds. They, like the California condors mentioned earlier, are raptors, and are not for eating. They catch prey with their talons and have excellent vision.
Albatrosses live in the southern seas near Australia and the Antarctic. There are 13 species of these large birds that mate for life and can live to be as old as humans — 80-85 years! When an albatross leaves its nest it might

IdentIty-theft ProtectIon ServIceS
The steps to protect your personal information from identity fraud are very simple: Keep spyware off your computer. Check your credit statements immediately when they arrive, or if you have good computer anti-spyware software, check your online bills more frequently. Use only your first initials and last name on your bank checks. Stop your mail while you’re away. Use a shredder for trash that has your name on it. Check your credit reports to make sure there are no errors. Take mail to the post office instead of leaving it outside your home. Don’t put your Social Security number on a job application.Still, even after taking all the safety steps, many people opt to purchase an identity-theft protection service. These services, however, do not completely free you from risk. In considering a protection service, you need to know:What services does the company provide? Some will monitor your personal information and see when it’s being used to apply for loans, credit cards or turning on utilities. Others will have your name taken off pre-approved credit offers. Some will help you get all your credit cards replaced, should there be a lost or stolen wallet. Others promise to protect you in the event information is stolen from your driver’s license number, public records and insurance records. How does it monitor your accounts? How are you notified if a breach in your security is detected? How much does the service cost? An average cost for these services is generally in the neighborhood of $10 per month, although certain add-on features can raise that price. If you’re the victim of identity theft, what services will the company provide to help you? What is the uppermost level of their insurance, should fraud occur and they have to do the work to restore your credit? For a real-world look at how identity-theft protection works, go online to www.pcworld.com and put this title in the search box: Identity-Theft Protection: What Services Can You Trust?Although the article is a few years old, the steps taken to test various identity-theft companies are worth noting. The point is that no company, no matter what it promises, can keep you completely safe. You need to take the initial steps to safeguard your personal information.

also very large but, because the cassowary is aggressive and dangerous, they have not been domesticated.
Kiwis are not only a tasty fruit but also the national bird of New Zealand. Kiwis are only about the size of chickens but lay large eggs — about ten times the size of chicken eggs. The nostrils on this flightless bird are on the tip of its beak and are used for sniffing out food at night.
In 1906, Kiwi Shoe Polish, sold in small cans with a kiwi symbol on the lid, became a very popular new product. It was marketed by an Australian from Melbourne who had a New Zealand-born wife. All over the world people from New Zealand are referred to affectionately as “kiwis.”
Two species of rheas, which are also flightless birds, are native to South America, and they also have healthy red meat. “Eggers,” crafters who decorate eggs, love rhea eggs. Darwin’s rheas lay pale green eggs, and common

Johnson Expects Chase to Go Down to WireS u p p o s e d l y , N A S C A R officials are contemplating
an offseason change in the Chase for the Sprint Cup that would provide some sort of elimination process.Based on the current Chase, it sort of takes care of itself.Seven races into the 10-race Chase, the crowd at the top is noteworthy. Never have three drivers been locked in such a tight battle, with 38 points separating Jimmie Johnson, Denny Hamlin and Kevin Harvick. But, with the great “wild card” (Talladega) behind them, the race has been effectively limited to those three. Four-time champion Jeff Gordon is fourth but trails Johnson by 207 points. Clint Bowyer, the winner of the Amp Energy Juice 500 — and only driver to win twice during the Chase to date — brings up the rear, 367 points behind Johnson. Gordon, Kyle Busch, Carl Edwards, Tony Stewart, Matt Kenseth, Kurt Busch, Jeff Burton, Greg Biffle and Bowyer all are far off the pace entering the remaining races in Fort Worth, Texas; Avondale, Ariz.; and Homestead, Fla.Johnson has won the past four Sprint Cup championships, an unprecedented achievement, but in each of his past titles, Johnson took a decent cushion into the final race. He doesn’t expect that to be the case this time.“The way it’s gone, I better be prepared for (winning)
the Ford 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway,” said Johnson. “If I’m not, then we aren’t doing our jobs. The last couple years down there, we’ve made sure that we had pace in our car and speed. Last year we won the pole, finishing sixth [actually fifth]. Ran good, had a strong night being conservative.“I feel like coming to Homestead this time, we need to race for this thing, which I’m pretty confident we’re going to have to do.”
At Talladega, Harvick finished second, Johnson seventh and Hamlin ninth. Harvick has the most top-10 finishes (23). Johnson and Harvick each have 15 top-five finishes. Hamlin has the most victories (7), one more than Johnson. After Talladega, where Hamlin managed to come back from being a lap down to the leaders, he said, “It looked like everyone broke even. I lost a little to the ‘48’ (Johnson), lost to the ‘29’ (Harvick), but still it wasn’t anything detrimental.”

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am writing to inquire about the mite that invades one’s body and causes dandruff on the head. I have used Selsun Blue shampoo, but it is taking so long to see an effect. I wonder if there is an antibiotic that I could take to get rid of it faster. — M.S.ANSWER: Dandruff is one form of seborrheic dermatitis — skin inflammation, along with an overproduction of skin cells and oil. The scalp is the place most often affected, but it also can be found on the sides and bridge of the nose, the eyebrows, ears, chest and back.A mite doesn’t cause it. Some speculate that a yeast (fungus) called Malassezia might be the troublemaker. This yeast is also found on scalps of those without dandruff, but those with dandruff have greatly increased numbers of it.Quite often, nonprescription treatments work well for dandruff. Selsun Blue is a good one. If, after one month of treatment, there’s no progress, then change to another. Head and Shoulders, Nizoral A-D and
T-Gel are a sample of the many products on drugstore shelves. Nizoral A-D contains ketoconazole, a medicine that is active against the Malassezia yeast. Follow directions carefully. Usually they call for daily use until there’s some improvement, and then every-other-day use for a month. From that time on, less-frequent applications are OK. The condition tends to be chronic, so a long commitment is the rule.If you’re not making any progress with over-the-counter preparations, then a doctor can provide you with a prescription for more powerful items.DEAR DR. DONOHUE: A cold front came in, and I had head/face pressure. What is that all about? — R.M.ANSWER: A change in barometric pressure or a drop in temperature can increase the pain of arthritic joints. Weather changes also can trigger migraine headaches. I haven’t seen head pressure mentioned as occurring with weather changes, but I can imagine how it might happen. The sinus cavities of the head could be subjected to a difference between their own internal pressure and the outside barometric pressure. Perhaps you and I are headed for a Nobel prize with this discovery.

NOVEMBER FEatuREd BusiNEssIndigo Pines is an
independent retirement home snuggled into a landscape of moss-laden oaks and towering pines. A fountain gurgles in front of the building, and walking paths surround it. It is a retirement home with heart. Holiday Retirement is the parent company, and trains all its employees in what they call the “Holiday Touch.” The Holiday Touch is simply that all the residents are treated as family by a caring, respectful, and empathetic management team.
It’s simple, really. There are two husband and wife management teams that live on site, and are on call 24 hours a day. They are truly dedicated to making the facility a home and making the residents as happy and secure as possible.
Holiday Retirement fashioned its retirement complexes on the cruise ship model. Three meals a day, weekly housekeeping, linens and towels provided, transportation to shopping, and appointments: its carefree living.
The residents and staff participate in many community events, as well as volunteer at hospice, thrift shops, and hospitals. These are active, involved adults. The Indigo Pines staff creates events and trips for the community at large. A trip to Parris Island was a highlight of October. The Hilton Head Vocal Jazz Project will be entertaining there in November, and a sock hop (wear your poodle skirt!) is also planned. Seminars are scheduled every month for continued learning: a Seminar on the Veteran Aid and Attendance benefits, a discussion about Medicare and Tricare, and an investment counselor to speak about investing and risk management are all planned for November.
Indigo Pines is located at 110 Gardner Drive on Hilton Head. Please stop by and enjoy dinner with us!
