Take some time to consider these facts about the human brain, brought to you this week by Tidbits. F There are about 100 billion neurons, or nerve cells, in the brain, which gather and transmit signals. That’s about the same number of stars there are in our galaxy! It’s these nerve cells that compose what is often referred to as “gray matter.” About 100 trillion connections exist among those cells, and not one neuron touches another one. These connections are known as synapses, and they allow the information to flow from one neuron to another. Each nerve cell can have up to 40,000 synapses. F Changes in the synapses are associated with learning and retention of information. Each time you form a memory of some type, a new connection is created. When synapses deteriorate, memory loss and changes in brain function often occur. Studies indicate that people who perform mentally stimulating tasks are less likely to develop dementia. Researchers have determined that stress interferes with transmission, and nerve cells actually shrink from the effects of stress. Deterioration has also been linked to drug use and excessive alcohol consumption, as well as the chemicals in certain pesticides. F Information is processed by your brain at speeds up to 268 miles per hour (120 meters per second). There are more electrical impulses generated in a single day by the brain than by all the world’s telephones. The brain’s energy is sufficient to illuminate a 25-watt light bulb. Hurricane Season Started June 1! Be Prepared!

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You’re wise to let your Arian skepticism question a former adversary’s request to let bygones be bygones. Time will tell if he or she is trying to pull the wool over the Lamb’s eyes.TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Congratulations. Your hard work soon pays off with some well-deserved recognition. Meanwhile, that important personal relationship needs more attention from you.GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) That new person in your life seems trustworthy, but don’t turn him or her into a confidant just yet. Remember: The secret you don’t reveal is the one you won’t lose sleep over.CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your kindness makes a difference in someone’s life. But by week’s end, a touch of Cancerian envy could create a problem with a colleague. Take care to keep it under control.LEO (July 23 to August 22) A new spurt of energy sends you roaring back into that challenging work situation. But be careful not to overdo it, or your sizzle could fizzle before your task is completed.VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your practical sense helps you see the logic of being a bit more flexible with a workplace colleague. But you still have a ways to go before there’s a true meeting of the minds.LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A surprise situation could cause you to spend more money than you feel you can afford. But careful budget adjustments will help. Your fiscal picture soon brightens.SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) That decision you made might still have its detractors, but your supporters are growing. Meanwhile, your personal life takes on some welcome new developments.SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Matters of the mind intrigue the sage Sagittarian through week’s end. By then, you should feel more than ready to make room for pursuits of the heart.CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The canny Capricorn can offer good counsel to others. But how about taking some advice yourself from a close friend or family member who is able and ready to help?AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A new workplace opportunity offers a variety of challenges that you might find intriguing. Best advice: Take things one step at a time so that you don’t feel overwhelmed.PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A bid to revive a relationship that ended on a bitter note needs to be carefully thought out before you can even begin to consider plunging into a new emotional commitment.BORN THIS WEEK: You enjoy being with people, and people love being with you. You would probably do very well in politics.

Challenging The Way We Think and Live in the Coming Week

In Luke 22:31-32 Jesus tells Peter “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”

In this scripture Jesus introduces us to the idea of sifting. To be sifted means “to be turned upside down, shaken and separated — to be shocked through the agitation of sudden trials.” In our lives these trials can take many forms — sickness, death of a loved one, loss of reputation, financial disaster, loss of employment, broken relationships, etc. The whole purpose Satan’s sifting is that we would turn from our faith!

Think about it for just a minute. We all know that just as He has big plans for us, Jesus has big plans for Peter so we might expect Jesus’ reply to Satan’s request to be not just no, but heck no, no way Jose, absolutely not.

But in verse 32 we see that Jesus doesn’t say no. Instead He responds “But I have prayed for you, Simon that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”

Two points here. First is the power of prayer. Our creator prays for us so how important is it for us to increase our prayer life. Second did you catch that Jesus does not pray that Peter would be spared from Satan’s sifting? Rather He prayed that Peter’s faith would not fail. Do you see that in a period of sifting our faith is of course Satan’s prime target? When Satan separates us from our faith he has an opening to kill, steal and destroy our hopes, dreams and aspirations.

So the questions has to be why does God who agape loves us allow Satan to sift us. Well you see God wants us to base our lives on His promise, not on our expectations. He wants us to base our lives on His promises found in His book of promises not on our expectations found in our

mind, heart or flesh.I don’t know about you but when I read this scripture

I can almost hear the devil saying to God, “So, You think Peter is a rock, do You? You think you can build your church on his kind of faith. Well, let me put him to the test. Let me place him in my sieve and shake him for a while. He won’t last. He’ll cave in. He’ll separate from you.” By the way, that is exactly what Satan is saying about you and me. He believes that our faith will fail us in times of storms.

What the Lord was really saying was to Peter 2000 years ago and what He is saying to us today is that, “Peter is worth saving. Satan desires him, but He desires him more.” Judas could not be saved; he had no heart for the Lord. He was sold out to greed and that became an open door for the devil. But Peter truly loved the Lord and Jesus said to him, “I have prayed for you.” Can you imagine sweeter words in all the world? Well know this you don’t have to imagine it. Right now your King, Lord and Savior is praying for you, praying that your faith will not fail.

In closing Jesus is the ultimate recycler. He takes the trash in our lives and converts it into treasure. Each of us is broken and we are all just one sinful decision away from being targets of sifting. We are all targets of deception. Don’t be fooled. Satan is after you and he is after your family. We will all be sifted, you can count on that. The trick is to allow yourself to suffer according to His will. The trick is to let God to come into our story of sifting. The trick is to know that one day soon, the sifting process will end. Satan will have done his worst but our Advocate, the Lord Jesus Christ, will win this battle for us.

Just maybe we should allow the real life example of Jesus to challenge the way we think and live in the coming week.

Being FirstThere is a peculiar desire in all of us to be first in something, and there are very few activities we can engage in that exemplify that characteristic more than in sports or journalism. (Even politicians don’t want to win all the time…there are some jobs you just don’t want.)Through the centuries, numerous maxims have been handed down regarding this unceasing need to be first. “First come, first served,” “There can only be one,” “If you’re not the lead dog, the view never changes,” are but a few that immediately come to mind. Often, being first is associated with winning. “Winning isn’t everything; it’s the only thing.” That comment, of course, gets challenged by many deep thinkers who would like to see people evolve a little bit. In many situations, the drive to be first can lead to lots of collateral damage, such as a stampede.A few weeks ago, the mediaverse was all atwitter when CNN announced, wrongly, that the federal healthcare bill had been repealed by the U.S. States Supreme Court when, in fact, it did just the opposite. Instead of being first with the news,

CNN lost credibility and are last in the cable news game.Being second really has little worth in our society. Neil Armstrong was the first man to set foot on the moon. Who was the second guy? But it’s better to be right than first in something. If Neil Armstrong and the moon crew were off on their calculations by just a fraction, they would have ended up hurtling into space, lost forever.Charles Lindbergh became the first man to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, and he did it without a front windshield (the term “flying blind” applies here). Amelia Earhart attempted to fly around the world, and we all know how that ended…uhh, actually, we don’t.In June we watched Nik Wallenda walk across Niagara Falls on a tightrope. Some thought he was the first to do so, but we know he was not. Popular theory has Emile Gravelet doing the stunt first in 1859, but nobody can really be sure. What we do know is that he was the first (and only) tightrope walker to cook an omelet on a wheelbarrow filled with hot stones and then lower the frying pan to passengers floating on the “Maid of the Mist” below him. The first person to win a marathon was a Greek soldier, but it wasn’t a game for him…he was delivering a message from the battlefield of Marathon to Athens — 26.2 miles. Upon delivery, legend has it, he died. So remember, when you’re breathing your last breath, make sure you can say that whatever it was that drove you in life, it was worth it in the end.
