Greekwordforheat.Itextends500miles(800km)high.Thisisthethickestlayerintheatmosphere,butonlythelightestgases—mostlyoxygen,helium,andhydrogen—arefoundhere.Temperaturescanriseto2,732°F(1,500°C).Thoughthetemperatureisveryhigh,thereisnotmuchheat.Heatiscreatedwhenmoleculesgetexcitedandtransferenergyfromonemoleculetoanother.Sincethereisverylittlepressureinthethermosphere,thereislittleheattransfer.Ifyouwereinthethermosphereunprotectedbyaspacesuit,yourbloodwouldboilwhileyourhandfeltnoheatatall.•TheHubbleSpaceTelescopeandtheInternationalSpace
