ATMOSPHERE FACTS • The word “atmosphere” comes from the Greek words “atmos” meaning “vapor” and “sphaira” meaning “sphere.” • 50% of the atmospheric pressure is found in the first 4 miles (6 km) above ground. 99% of the pressure is in the first 60 miles (100 km). Anyone crossing this range is an astronaut. • 78% of air is nitrogen. Without nitrogen, living creatures cannot manufacture proteins. Without proteins, they cannot manufacture enzymes. Without enzymes, there is no life. • 21% of air is oxygen. Half comes from plants and half from microbes. Without oxygen, animals cannot exist. Humans cannot function in an environment with less than 17% oxygen. • 1% of air is made up of argon, carbon dioxide, neon, helium, methane, krypton, hydrogen, nitrous oxide, xenon, ozone, iodine, carbon monoxide, and ammonia. • The earth’s air weighs about 500 trillion tons. •Radiowavesbounceofftheionosphere.Theionosphereisbrokendownintoseverallayers,whichvaryaccordingtotheseason,latitude,andtimeofday.Atnight,thebottomtwolayersoftheionospheredisappear.Thismakesiteasierforradiowavestobecarriedlongdistances,explainingwhyyoucanoftenhearAMradiostationsfromhundredsofmilesawayatnightbutnotduringtheday.•Abovethemesosphereisthethermosphere,namedforthe

Greekwordforheat.Itextends500miles(800km)high.Thisisthethickestlayerintheatmosphere,butonlythelightestgases—mostlyoxygen,helium,andhydrogen—arefoundhere.Temperaturescanriseto2,732°F(1,500°C).Thoughthetemperatureisveryhigh,thereisnotmuchheat.Heatiscreatedwhenmoleculesgetexcitedandtransferenergyfromonemoleculetoanother.Sincethereisverylittlepressureinthethermosphere,thereislittleheattransfer.Ifyouwereinthethermosphereunprotectedbyaspacesuit,yourbloodwouldboilwhileyourhandfeltnoheatatall.•TheHubbleSpaceTelescopeandtheInternationalSpace

AtlanticfromMainetoDemarkin1934,theycarriedwiththema set of sticky oil-coatedmicroscope slides,whichtheyexposed to theatmosphereat intervalsatanaltitudeofabout3,000feet(914m).Theslideswerestudiedtoseewhatsortsofsporestheypickedupfloatingthroughtheairatsomeoftheremotestspotsontheplanet.Everylocationshowedlargenumbersofspores.•Sporesofthecommonpenicillinmoldhavebeenfound

floatingat50miles(80km).•WindstormsoverAfricakickuphugeloadsoffinesand

fromtheSaharaDesertandcarryitaloftovertheAtlanticOcean.IttakesbetweenfiveandtendaysfordustfromtheSaharadeserttocrosstheseatolandinBrazil.Thisrainofdustovertheeonssincethelasticeagehasmadetherainforests possible by bringing calcium, iron, nitrogen, andpotassium to nourish soils that are routinely stripped ofnutrientsbyrelentlessrain.•Dust falling into the ocean nourishes plankton by
