Spotlight On: The South Carolina Aeronautical Training CenterMany campers can get their first glimpse inside the brand new South Carolina Aeronautical Training Center
(SCATC) on Trident Tech’s Thornley Campus this summer. This high-tech facility is filled with state-of-the-art
equipment that students get to use in many of our STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) focused
summer camps, which may inspire them to consider a future in a technological field.
2020 Summer Camps in the SCATC include:
• Aviation Adventures (Ages 9-11), see pg. 27
• Design Engineering: 3D Printing (Ages 12-17), see pg. 51
• Fun with Composites (Ages 12-17), see pg. 35
• Manufacturing Robots (Ages 12-17), see pg. 51
• VEX Robotics Team A/B (Ages 12-17), see pg. 48
“I’ve often said, South Carolina has a decade to do what Washington state had a century to do – create an
aeronautical culture,” Trident Tech President, Dr. Mary Thornley said. “To do this requires more than education: it
requires inspiration. The South Carolina Aeronautical Training Center will be that place of inspiration! Consider a
summer learning experience in this world class facility. Be inspired to explore.”
The SCATC is also playing host to a brand new scholarship program, the Lowcountry Advanced Manufacturing
Institute (LAMI) that launches this summer (see pg. 62). Running concurrently with our summer camps LAMI is
intended to give students an overarching view of the many career paths encompassed in the world of advanced
manufacturing and includes tours of area facilities as well as hands-on learning with SCATC equipment.
