ABSTRACTThe Student Booklet is a companion document to "The
Career Data Book: Results from Project TALENT'S Five-year FollowupStudyll (CE 000 755). The booklet's purpose is to enable the highschool student to compare his abilities, achievements, interests, andbackground with those of other young people who went into variousoccupations so he may be guided in his career choice. By plotting hispercentile rankings from interest inventories, vocabulary and abilitytests, and other variables on a profile, the student is referred toany of twelve career groups: engineering, physical science, math, andarchitecture; medical and-biological sciences; businessadministration; general teaching and social services; humanities, law, - social and behavioral sciences; fine arts, performing arts;technical jobs; proprietors, sales; mechanics, industrial trades;construction trades; secretarial-clerical, office workers; andgeneral labor, community, and public service. From that point, he isreferred to occupations within the groups. The inferences drawn arebased on data from inventories and tests given to high schoolstudents in 1960, with career choice data updated in a five-yearfollowup study as part of Project TALENT. (AG)

Results from Project TALENT's Five-Year Follow-Up Study
This booklet is to help r compare your own abilities, achievements, interests, and background with those ofother young people who went into various occupations.
Ask your counselor for help in getting your percentilerankings. Then (Inter them on the following page (Page2).
Your percentile rating on something tells what per-cent of Americans of your grade and sex are not as goodat it as you are, or have less of it than you do. Forexample, if you are at the 30th percentile in readingcomprehension, then 30% of Americans of your gradeand /sex are not as good at it as you are, and 70% oftheir( are better. If your interest in office work is atthe 5th percentile, then office work bores you, because95% of the people of your age and sex like it better thanyou do. On the other hand if your percentile rank forinterest in office work is 87, then you are More inter-ested in it that 87% of Americans of your grade and sex.
We have chosen the jobs that the most people go intoand sorted them into twelve career groups. All the jobswithin any one career group are somewhat similar. Theytake about the :lame amount of education and similarpatterns of abilities, achievements, interests, etc.
You can compare yourself with the people in eachof the twelve career groups to find which career groupfits you best. To do this, turn to page 4. The numberson the graph are the numbers of the twelve careergroups listed on page 3. They are placed at the averagepercentile rating of the people in that career group.Put your own percentile rankings on the profile. If youuse a red pencil, they will be easier to see. For example,if your percentile ranking for the first of the Interestentries on the profile, -Interest in physical science, engineering, and math, is 70, you will put a red cross onthe first line of the graph just under the number 70.Do this for all your percentile rankings. Then look tosee which of the numbers that represent the careergroups is most often next to the red crosses that repre-sent your percentile ranking. For example, if the num-ber 7 often appears near your red crosses, this wouldbe a good career group to start looking for an occupa-tion in.
Now look at page 3 of the book. Career Group 7 is"Technical Positions." Fourteen occupations are listedunder it. Each one has a letter before it. To find outwhich of these fourteen occupations has people in it whoare most like you, turn to the profile on page 11 (theprofile for Career Group 7). The letters on it correspondto the different occupations listed under Career Group 7,"Technical Positions," on page 3. Now enter your ownpercentile ratings by making red crosses on the page 11graph. See which of the letters is most often near your

red crosses. Suppose it is the letter "C." By consultingpage 3 again you find that this is the letter for com-puter repair serviceman. Ask your counselor to let youread the description and see the detailed profile of thisoccupation in the large Career Data Book.
If you think this is the wrong occupation for you, lookat some of the other letters, and see if there is someother occupation in Career Group 7 in which the workersare a good deal like you.
(Jr if there is an occupation in some other careergroup that you are particularly interested in, you canturn to the profile for that career group and enter yourpercentile rankings there, then see how near they areto the letters that represent the job you are interestedin. For example, if you think you might like to be awildlife or conservation specialist, you can enter yourrankings on the profile for Career Group 2 on page 6,and see how near they are to the letter "H" which rep-resents the rankings for wildlife and conservation spe-cialistsThen look at the profile and description for thatoccupation in the Career Data Book.
One thing that you need to know to, understand theprofiles in the Career Data Book is what the horizontalline opposite each listing of interest, information, andabilities means. This bar shoWs the ranking made by50% of the people going into the occupation or careergroup. For example, look at the profile for wildlife andconservation specialists in the counselor's Career DataBook. This profile shows the rankings of men who be-came wildlife and conservation specialists. The hori-zontal line shows the range of rankings made by themiddle 50% of the men who, five years after highschool, had either become wildlife and conservation spe-cialists or were preparing to do so. Now look at thescale for information in social studies. The horizontalline extends from the 32nd percentile to the 82nd. So50% of the men had rankings between the 32nd and the82nd percentiles. 25% were lower in information regard-ing social studies than the 32nd percentile, and another25% were higher than the 82nd percentile. The little'vertical mark in the middle of the bar shows that theaverage percentile ranking for information in socialstudies of men becoming wildlife and conservation spe-cialists is 71, but many are lower and many higher.
Sometimes students want very much to enter a certainoccupation but find that some of their percentile rank-ings are low compared with those of other people whoentered that occupation. If this is the case with you,talk-to your counselor about it. It may be that your lowpercentile ratings are in areas that aren't really essentialto that occupation. Or they may be in fields where hardwork and special training will enable you to raise them.

*The twelve Career Groups are represented on this chart by their numbers as given in Table 1 on page 3 of the Stu-dent's-hooklet. For example, five years after their graduation from high school, students who were planning acareer in Business Administration (Career Group 3) had a mean vocabulary score (on Information Test) close to apercentile ranking of 65 among students who were in grades 10, 11, and 12 in 1960. These results are based onreplies from more than 108,000 students.
