KingPIN has been designed to connect light-weight rainscreen façades to steel frame external walls. The use of the KingPIN and its mounting brackets can significantly increase the thermal performance of the external envelope of the building.
KingPIN Mounting Brackets
Concept
KingPIN has been designed to minimise heat transfer through the connection of light-weight rainscreen façades to light steel frame walling
while maintaining structural efficiency.
KingPIN Mounting Bracket (other types available as below)
Assembly
Basic principles
• Incremental versions of the KingPIN are available, giving a universal fitment for various claddings and insulation thickness
scenarios.
• The KingPIN is designed to be installed quickly, utilising the least amount of parts necessary
• The KingPIN is delivered as an assembly, which includes the self-drilling fastener, PIN and bracket.
• The KingPIN is either factory or site fitted to the framework retaining the insulation in place.
• Helping hand brackets: 430 grade Stainless Steel. Batten brackets: 6061 T6 Aluminium Alloy. KingPIN: 304 Stainless Steel.
• The KingPIN is available in varying lengths covering 50, 60, 70, 90, 100, 110mm thick insulation.
• The KingPIN brackets are available as either helping hand or batten attachment formats
• The quantity of KingPIN’s and bracketry are to be determined by structural calculation accounting for the setting out and strength
of studs in the framework, wind loads, static weight and insulation requirements etc.
The product can be used with KingBuild System (KBS) in either load bearing or non-loadbearing (infill) situations. The product can also be
supplied for site fixing as part of the Kingframe Steel Framing System (SFS), subject to design guidelines being followed.
When the product is factory fitted, the Kingspan Steel Building Solutions Technical Team will fully design the layout etc. Where site fixed,
advice should be sought from Kingspan Steel Building Solutions to ensure correct use.

Guidelines for KingPIN Type/Locations
The three types of KingPIN are used in locations set by the
Kingspan Steel Building Solutions structural engineers. As the
type of cladding has direct implications on the KingPIN locations
advice should be sought to aid setting out.
Openings/Apertures
Where there are apertures within the frame, the dead weight of
the cladding must be supported above and below the aperture.
Here, the same philosophy is applied as a general stud, where a
three KingPIN is used to support the dead weight and single
KingPINs are used to restrain the cladding to all other locations.
This applies both above and below an opening
Fixing Rules
• KingBuild System (KBS) - from head/base track where V
bracket present, a 90 mm no fixing zone must be adhered to.
From Cill and Lintel there should be a 150mm no fixing zone
(in order to take to account compound members)
• KingFrame Steel Framing System (SFS) - care needs to be
taken to ensure the KingPIN location does not compromise
the stud deflection detail.
Installation of KingPIN & Brackets.
Factory Fitted:
• Is covered by Kingspan Steel Building Solutions Technical
Advice Document (TAD)
• The KingPINs are fitted in a controlled environment in
locations driven by the in house design software.
Site Fitted:
• Cement Particle Board is fitted to the steel frame, using
wafer head screws
• Insulation is installed and held in position using the
appropriate fasteners to suit thickness
• Studs need to be located and the insulation marked central
to the stud to ensure the fixings are connected to the centre
line of steel elements.
• KingPINs are placed in position taking care to follow marks
indicating stud positions and screwed into their final position
using the appropriate driver bits.
• Note the importance of vertical alignment
In order to easily mark the centre line of studs down the
building, it is crucial to align studs from floor. KingPINs must
be fixed back to the stud.
• The relevant bracketry can then be attached to the KingPIN
using a socket head screw and washer.
• Taking into account the cavity gap, the desired length of
aluminium tee or angle extrusion can be established (design
and supply by others).
• The tee or angle can then be screwed / riveted into position
in accordance with the design.
• When these have been installed, the horizontal cross rails
can be fitted. The spacing of these need to be exactly the
same as those of the clips attached to the inner face of the
façades.
• To ensure ease of fixing on site it is essential that an
extended drill head is selected to prevent the head detaching
within the pin.

Engineering Design
Location of KingPIN fixed and floating brackets is to be determined by calculation by a suitably qualified engineer.
Generally, the fixed 3 hole bracket is the standard fitment for supporting the façade and is placed centrally on the frame. This centrally
placed 3 pin bracket provides all vertical support for the façade. It should be rigidly fixed (i.e. with a connection suitable for transfer of
moment) to the cladding rail or batten to ensure that the fixing back to the supporting wall is in pure shear due to dead load. Account for this
must be made in the rail and fixing design by others. The 3 pin bracket is also used as a wind restraint fixing point. Design capacities are
given overleaf.
The 1 & 2 pin brackets are used as lateral restraint fixings only and are spaced according to the calculated pullout loads applied.
For further guidance, please contact Kingspan Steel Building Solutions.
Load Capacity
Safe working load capacities are given below for the KingPIN rainscreen bracket assemblies available. These are based on:
• Fixing to Kingspan S390 grade C section studs with minimum 1.2mm gauge
• Fixing through a sheathing board of up to 14mm thickness1 and Kingspan K15 or TW55 insulation
of up to 110mm thickness
• A maximum offset of the cladding centre of gravity from the rear face of the bracket of 100mm
• An allowable vertical deflection of the assembly of 5mm under load
• An allowable lateral deflection of the assembly of 3mm under load

Thermal Performance
Performance varies dependant on insulation thicknesses - full U value calcs are available on request. Significant improvement in thermal
performance is achieved using KingPIN due to:
• The insulation does not have to be fitted around a bracket; and
• The insulation does not have to be cut back and ‘made good’ to accommodate the fixing.
