The engineer will require the following information:

⇒ Building Site Address.

⇒ Overall height of building.

⇒ Cladding Type.

⇒ Vertical Span of Stud.

⇒ Grid Reference (if available).

Tips, Tricks & Explanations

1) Querying Stud Specifications.

On projects where there is a high wind load specified and a high vertical stud span, Kingframe Infinity® will sometimes specify ‘back to back’ studs.

Where ‘back to back’ studs has been specified. We can always try and potentially reduce the stud specification by the following methods (only in instances where there is Head Track Failure).

Check 1

On the ‘Project’ Screen the Track Gauge can altered from the standard 1.8mm to 2.0mm.

Check 2

On the Frame drawing under Frame Sections the ‘Deflection Gap’ can be changed from the standard 25mm to 15mm.

Note: You will need to seek clarification from site structural engineer that this acceptable prior to changing or by checking deflection limits on the structure as explained in Tutorial No.1 (Default is L/360).

Check 3

If the Kingframe SFS is not a the minimum specification we can look at using ‘Mid-Height Noggins’ Nor-mally required on projects where there is a high wind load specified and a high vertical stud span. Nor-mally used on 150mm sections and upwards.

Page 6: Kingspan Steel Building Solutions Kingframe Infinity® Tips ...images5.kingspanpanels.co.uk/file/asset/14400/... · • Maximum ‘Overall Width’ of a frame = 10,000mm and Maximum

2) Bracing above window lintels..

On larger window openings Kingframe Infinity® will sometimes specify compound lintels, these can be made up of 3

or 5 sections. However in some instances we can specify double bracing above a window to support the loads and

reduce the material specification of the lintel and where practically possible, removing a compound lintel altogether.

Page 7: Kingspan Steel Building Solutions Kingframe Infinity® Tips ...images5.kingspanpanels.co.uk/file/asset/14400/... · • Maximum ‘Overall Width’ of a frame = 10,000mm and Maximum

3) Additional Brick tie Studs

Kingframe Infinity® has a number of external and internal cladding conditions stored for ease of use /

selection.

Note: When Masonry is selected in the ‘Cladding Load’ dialogue box the program will automatically add ‘Brick Tie’

studs either side of an opening.

Page 8: Kingspan Steel Building Solutions Kingframe Infinity® Tips ...images5.kingspanpanels.co.uk/file/asset/14400/... · • Maximum ‘Overall Width’ of a frame = 10,000mm and Maximum

4) ‘Z’ Bars & 2/3 Bearing

i) Zed bars at head:

Bearing rules:

‘Z’ bars are required when there is less than 2/3 bearing of the Kingframe SFS on the supporting structure. The dimension is taken from the edge of the stud (not the track) to the bearing edge of the substructure. See below example :

So the minimum bearing for each system (or maximum overhang) should be:

* Note: the 2/3 Bearing rule does not apply to the 70mm system as we need minimum edge distance for fixing the panel up or down to the structure. Therefore a 70mm system must always have 50mm bearing (max 20mm overhang)

The maximum overhang of the wall panel should be limited. For the head of the panel condition, this should be limited to a maximum overhang of 300mm (i.e. distance from outside face of panel to edge of structure).

The length of the zed bar required will be: Overhang length specified + 140mm

In Section this would be represented as follows:

ii) Zed Bar Frequency

Zed bars will be generally be positioned as follows:

• There will always be 1 Zed bar at panel ends positioned centrally above the stud

• Zeds will be installed at 1200 Centres at the head of the set out from the first zed bar in the panel. If the panel

is less than 1200 wide then zed bars only need to be installed at panel ends

• An additional zed bar will be positioned at jambs stud positions

• 2No will be required when a high load cleat is used at the jamb stud position

• If a zed bar at 1200 centres clashes with a jamb stud zed bar, we still need both zed bars. The general zed bar will be locally shifted by 150mm to the right or left to avoid clashing with other items.

The ‘Frame overhang to substructure (Top) & (Bottom)’ can be specified in ‘Fixings’ on the ‘Project Explorer’.

The KingPOST is a wind moment post designed and supplied by Kingspan Steel Building Solutions.

The KingPOST is an alternative for bespoke hot rolled steel posts and is used to provide restraint to the SFS

system on applications such as large spanning windows or parapets. It offers a standard off the shelf solution

that can be used to form a range of cantilevers . The base is a standard assembly to which light gauge steel

studs can be fixed to form the final arrangement.

Kingframe Infinity® allows the user to import drawings, sketches and comments into Report.

Kingframe Infinity® also has all the Kingframe SFS standard details which can be

imported into the report. A full explanation of each detail can be obtained from

the Kingframe SFS Technical Manual (www.kingspanpanels.co.uk/sbs)

Tips, Tricks & Notes Summary.

• Any panel with more than a 10º pitch will require ‘Deflection Head Brackets’ (DHB) instead of the preferred

standard Slotted Studs.

• When Masonry is selected in the ‘Cladding Load’ dialogue box the program will automatically add ‘Brick Tie’

studs either side of an opening.

• Maximum ‘Overall Width’ of a frame = 10,000mm and Maximum ‘Height’ of a frame = 5,000mm. If the project

exceeds the maximum height then contact Kingspan Technical or your Area Sales Manager for more

information.

• On high vertical spans and high wind loads changing the top track to a 2mm Section can sometimes reduce

the stud specification, this can be cost effective especially on large areas, however 95% of the time a 1.8mm

head track will be the best value engineered option.

• On high vertical spans and high wind loads reducing the deflection limit from 25mm to 15mm can sometimes

reduce the specification of a frame, however you will need to seek clarification from the site engineer on the

live load deflection criteria.

• The introduction of a Structural Mid-Height Noggin may reduce the stud specification. Mid-Height Noggins

maybe required on vertical spans greater than 4000mm.

• On large window openings Kingframe Infinity® will sometimes specify compound lintels, these can be made

up of 3 or 5 sections. However in some instances we can specify bracing above a window to support the

loads and reduce the material specification of the lintel, and sometimes this removes a compound lintel

altogether.

• The ‘Manufactured Tolerance’ will be added to the Bill of Materials but is not shown in the panel drawing.

The frame height in for example is 3000mm high; the Stud height is 3021mm, this is because it has taken off

25mm deflection + material thicknesses of Head and Base Track and added a manufacturing tolerance of

50mm, which is reflected in the cost.

• It may be worthwhile tidying the drawing using AutoCAD or equivalent, ensuring all geometry is on the

‘Model’ tab, however this is not a necessity, but may speed up the framing process.

• It is important that the ‘Building Extents’ box is closed, otherwise Infinity might not frame properly.

• It is important to select within the ‘Building Extents’ box, otherwise Infinity might not frame properly.

• Infinity will select ‘Opening’ and ‘Cut Out’ automatically in Elevation mode when creating openings.

• The resolution of an imported PDF will be reduced to keep the file size down. It is always important to import

a PDF with reference dimensions so the scale can be calculated.

• When selected, the border of the PDF should be dashed with four square boxes.

• Kingframe Infinity® will not allow to calculate frames without first specifying Wind and Cladding Zones.

• The project will need to be saved before a report can be generated.
