The Longstreet Cancer Center, in partnership with The Longstreet Clinic’s Departments of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R), and Physical Therapy, is proud to introduce the STAR Program.

The STAR (Survivorship Training And Rehab) program is the first certified cancer rehabilitation program in the state of Georgia. It is an evidence-based program that uses an interdisciplinary approach in which Physical Therapists team up with Oncologists to help patients increase their strength and energy, alleviate pain and improve daily function and well-being.

The program was developed by a Harvard Physiatrist (a physician specializing in rehabilitation medicine), and Dr. Julie Silver, a cancer survivor who saw a need to focus on this aspect of cancer care.

Any cancer patient may be referred to the program (which is covered by most health insurances). Common reasons to participate in the program include:

• Pain• Cancer and cancer treatment-related fatigue• Balance and gait disturbance• Lymphedema• To establish a physical baseline• To establish a healthy exercise program• Musculoskeletal limitations or symptoms

Over the past year, Longstreet Cancer Center underwent review by the QOPI® Certification Program, an

affiliate of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and its Quality Oncology Practice Initiative.

We are proud to announce that LCC has achieved this certification.

Longstreet Cancer Center is now one of only two practices in the state of Georgia and 116 in the United States to be certified by QOPI. The QOPI® Certification Program is an initiative to certify oncology practices that meet rigorous standards for high-quality cancer care.

“We are proud to be among the first to receive this important certification, which underscores our commitment to both safety and the highest quality of care for our patients,” said Richard LoCicero, M.D.

QOPI is a voluntary program that enables hematology-oncology and medical oncology practices to assess the quality of the care they provide to patients. QOPI analyzes individual practice data and compares the data to more than 80 evidence-based and consensus quality measures.

QOPI was established as a pilot program in 2002 to promote the highest quality of cancer care delivery. The Longstreet Cancer Center has been participating in the program since 2006, when the pilot program was first expanded to all ASCO members.

Today, over 700 oncology practices throughout the U.S. (and abroad) participate. Participating practices are evaluated by external audits and reviews to meet quality standards related to cancer disease management, symptom and toxicity management, and safety standards related to chemotherapy administration.

QOPI certified practices are those that meet the highest standard of quality cancer care. Many health plans recognize QOPI certified practices as preferred providers. We are proud to continuously work toward the highest quality of care for you.

ProteinChoicesGoBeyondMeatAisleAll of us have to eat, so that means most of us

have to make frequent trips to the grocery store. You may have heard of the tips to improve our supermarket habits, such as plan ahead, make a list, do not go to the store hungry, etc.

Many claim that it costs more to eat “healthy.” I really disagree with this statement. For example, meat is usually our most expensive food item found in our shopping carts. But our choices to obtain a complete protein go way beyond the meat aisle.

Replacing animal meat with dried beans, peas, and lentils served with whole grains or nuts are sufficient protein sources and far less expensive than animal meats. Quinoa and soybeans such as edamame are both complete proteins, even by themselves.

Let us not forget that this switch to a more plant-based meal plan is also advocated for decreasing the risk of many cancers.

Unless you are buying at the local farmer’s market, frozen fruits and vegetables often are more nutritious than those bought fresh at the grocery store. Time and light affect the

nutritional value of fresh items.Broccoli picked in California

may take days to be trucked and distributed to your grocery store. This means much nutrient loss. Broccoli that is frozen is usually done so within an hour of being picked therefore many nutrients are preserved; so frozen varieties that are less costly can be a wonderful, healthy choice.

The simple spinach recipe below is a perfect example of making use of a nutritious frozen vegetable with plenty of complete protein; no animal meat needed here. I love using spinach anywhere I can in my meal planning; spinach has so few calories and it rocks the nutrition charts for so many nutrients including the “eye vitamins,” lutein and zeaxanthin.Registered dietitian Mary Ann Clever, RD, LD, CDE, is available to assess individual needs and to work with patients and their families to develop strategies that can meet the nutritional requirements for healing and well-being. If you have questions or would like to set up an appointment for an individual consultation, please call (770) 297-5705.

Progress is monitored throughout the program and coordinated with your Oncologist. Sites of service are available throughout Northeast Georgia for your convenience. Talk to your doctor or nurse about a referral to get you STARted!

Oncology drug shortages are easingIn the news recently there have been several

reports of drug shortages. These shortages have been occurring nationwide and have affected the Gainesville area.

We have been working closely with our suppliers to stay ahead of the problem and for the most part have been able to avoid some of these issues.

In some cancer treatments there are therapeutic equivalences that may be used. But in others, delays have occurred. Fortunately these have been few and not long lasting.

The FDA is working with manufacturers to improve reporting shortages of raw material and manufacturing capabilities. This will better help the government stay ahead of problems in the future Right now the FDA is speeding up the approval of new manufacturing procedures and drugs to decrease these shortages.

The Longstreet Cancer Center has been fortunate to have only suffered mild shortages and we have been able to make substitutions. We will keep you informed of any changes to these issues. If you have any questions please feel free to contact us at (770) 297-5700.
