Every me we a end a wake or funeral or pass by a cemetery, we are vividly reminded of our mortality. Our life on this earth is finite and those of us who are strong will, on the average, live seventy to ninety years, give or take a few years. This mortality that we all must come to grips with, points to the fact that our des ny lies elsewhere. For those who have welcomed God into their lives and have sincerely opened themselves to His love are des ned to spend eternity with God in Heaven. I have o en pondered what Heaven will be like. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches, “This perfect life with the Most Holy Trinity—this communion of life and love with the Trinity, with the Virgin Mary, the angels and all the blessed—is called “heaven.” Heaven is the ul mate end and fulfillment of the deepest human longings, the state of su-preme, defini ve happiness.” (CCC 1024) Heaven is understood as the dwelling-place of God, who is thus dis nguished from human beings. A er our earthly life, par cipa on in complete in macy with the Father thus comes through our inser on into Christ's paschal mystery. Thus heaven becomes an image of life in God. In the context of Revela on, we know that the "heaven" or "happiness" in which we will find ourselves is neither an ab-strac on nor a physical place in the clouds, but a living, person-al rela onship with the Holy Trinity. Any descrip on we try to place on heaven o en seems to come up short. A er all, we who live in me, in this valley of tears, can never a ain com-plete fulfillment and happiness in this life. We always find our-selves hungry for something more, something else. What is it that could quench our thirst for happiness and fulfillment to such a degree that we could truly be happy for eternity? I think Saint Paul said it best when he said, “What eye has not seen, and ear has not heard, and what has not entered the human heart, what God has prepared for those who love him.” (1 Cor. 2:9) These words capture the indescribability of a place that will make us happy beyond our wildest hopes and dreams. The book of Revela on adds a wonderful foreshadowing, “They will look upon his face, and his name will be on their fore-heads. Night will be no more, nor will they need light from lamp or sun, for the Lord God shall give them light, and they shall reign forever and ever.” (Rev. 22:4-5) Have you thought about heaven today? God Bless You.

BLUE MASS FOR FIRST RESPONDERS- The Knights of Columbus Council 5800 and Columbiettes will sponsor a Blue Mass on Sunday, September 12 at 9:30 A.M. at St. Joseph Church in New Paltz (34 South Chestnut St.). This Mass is to honor both the heroic sacrifices made by first responders on September 11, 2001 and the ongoing sacrifices made by our local first respond-ers. Join us and celebrate these brave and selfless men and women who give us such a beautiful witness to Christ’s commandment for us to take care of one another. A reception with refreshments will follow Mass in the parish hall. All are welcome! ST. JOSEPH'S BOOK CLUB- The next book for
St. Joseph's Book Club will be "The Problem of Pain" by C.S. Lewis.
