Sunday, October 20, 2019 – Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time - Cycle C Readings: Sirach 35: 12-14, 16-18, Psalm 34 “The Lord hears the cry of the poor”, 2 Timothy 4: 6-8, 16-18, Luke 18 : 9-14
TWO MEN WENT UP TO THE TEMPLE TO PRAY
Sisters and brothers,
Christ presents us with two types of people that exist within ourselves, the proud, vain Pharisee and the humble, sinful publican. Every time we hear this Gospel passage, it's so easy for us to think we are on the middle ground, nei-ther proud like the Pharisee, nor sinful like the publican. Perhaps for many this attitude may be correct, but most of us need to recognize that we share elements in common with both.
1. In the end the Pharisee was hoping to be pleasing to God, as each of us does so often when we fall to our knees be-fore Christ. Behind all this, we must acknowledge that there is a hint of pride. Both men go up to the temple with a good and holy intention - to pray. The Gospel says that "they go up," in other words, they go out of themselves. This is normally our problem. Saint Augustine used to say, "God will depart from you if you go up with pride. If you lower yourself with humility, God will come down to you."
2. The Pharisee considered himself pleasing in God's eyes as he offered him the platter of his good deeds. He goes up to the front and says, "I give you thanks because I am not like the rest... I do pay taxes." Is that really praying? Deep down this shows an attitude of pride, because I am trying to show God how good I am. The Gospel tells us that he did not go home justified. Our prayer should be, "Lord, have mercy on this Pharisee that lives in me."
3. The publican comes with an attitude of humility, he feels ashamed of his soul, his very self, his sin. "He didn't dare to raise his eyes to Heaven, nor enter the temple." Here no one saves himself, we are all sinners; some more than others, but we are all sinners. The publican is the one who realizes that his hands are not clean, and so he is also in need of conversion. The only effective weapon we hold to ward off that Pharisee within us is the weapon of the pub-lican. In other words, we must recognize quite simply that we are Pharisees.
God becomes helpless when we pray with humility. Humility is the best attitude for prayer because it lays bare our soul before our Creator, and thus freed from worldly attachments, we can love with our soul fixed on God.
I invite you to pray like the publican: a prayer of humility, confidence, repentance. God is always willing to listen to us and heal our wounds. Christ gives us the example when he prays and asks for the forgiveness of sins. Our life will be changed, as Saint Augustine said, "The man who prays well, lives well." Because prayer generates faith, faith gener-ates love, love generates piety and the desire to serve the poor. Amen. Source: https://www.epriest.com/homily_packs/spanish/48#english

Domingo, 27 de octubre de 2019 - XXX Domingo del tiempo ordinario - Ciclo C Lecturas: Eclesiástico (Sirácide) 35, 12-17, 20-22, Salmo 33 “El Señor no está lejos de sus fieles”, 2 Timoteo 4, 6-8,16-18, Lucas 18, 9-14
DOS HOMBRES SUBIERON AL TEMPLO A ORAR
Hermanas y hermanos:
Fuente: https://www.epriest.com/homily_packs/spanish/48#spanish

Good News Outreach has been a mainstay of support for the last 33 years to those who have the greatest needs and fewest resources in our community. Through our programs, Good News Outreach has annually provided housing, food and companionship to more than 13,000 seniors, low income families, and previously incarcerated men. Our Annual Prayer Breakfast is our biggest fundraiser and this year we need your help more than ever. We hope that you can join us for a deli-cious breakfast, a silent auction and a special program to include Key-note Speaker, Sheriff of Leon County, Walter A. McNeil. Prayer during the hurricane season.
Father, all the elements of nature obey your command. Calm the storms and hurricanes that threaten us
and turn our fear of your power into praise of your goodness.
Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, forever and ever.
Amen.
