lasting treasures may be found.
Petition: I will perform a hidden act of charity for someone
whom I find bothersome.
“Prayer: Lord our God, You are the

sees the hidden depths of each
person: As we hear the cry of those
who journey in our midst, Still our

voice And understand their
concerns. Lord, in your mercy Hear
our prayer
Amen”

News in the Church
SYNOD ON SYNODALITY 2021-2023
Pope Francis formally opened the two-year Synod on Synodality on the 10th of October.
Synodality is about journeying together and listening to one another to hear what God is
saying to all of us. It is realizing that the Holy Spirit can speak through anyone to help us
walk forward together on our journey as the People of God.
With this convocation, Pope Francis invites the entire Church to reflect on a theme that is
decisive for its life and mission: “It is precisely this path of synodality which God expects of
the Church of the third millennium.”
The journey involves the diocesan, continental and universal Church. The synodal process,
aims to reorder the Church’s internal mechanisms for discussion and reflection, and to
help shape a new way for the Church to understand and articulate both her internal self-
understanding and mission of evangelization. The Synond on Synodality will culminate with
an assembly in October 2023 in Rome. (Preparatory Document 9-7-21)

Celebration of the Episcopal Ordination of the Bishop of
Hwange
It was a moment of joy and tribulation on the 30th of October 2021 in the
diocese of Hwange and the Catholic Church in Zimbabwe as at least two
thousand people, including members and leaders of the local Catholic Church
gathered at Hwange Colliery Stadium, Hwange to witness the Episcopal
Ordination of a new shepherd Monsignor Raphael Macebo Mabuza Ncube
who was appointed as the fourth Bishop of Hwange Diocese by His Holiness
Pope Francis on the 5th of July 2021. Bishop Raphael Ncube takes over from
Bishop Emeritus Jose Albert Serrano Anton who retired in 2016 after reaching
the age of retirement.
Gracing the occasion was His Excellency Most Rev. Archbishop Paolo Rudelli
the Apostolic Nuncio to Zimbabwe, Bishop Emeritus Albert Serrano Apostolic
Administrator of Hwange Diocese, Archbishop Robert Christopher Ndlovu of
Archdiocese of Harare and President of the Zimbabwe Catholic Bishops’
Conference (ZCBC), Archbishop Alex Thomas of Archdiocese of Bulawayo,
Bishop Paul Horan of Mutare Diocese, Bishop Michael Bhasera of Masvingo, Bishop Rudolph Nyandoro of Gweru, Bishop
Raymond Mupandasekwa of Chinhoyi Diocese and Fr Frederick Chiromba ZCBC General Secretary.
The Mass was presided over by Archbishop Alex Thomas and the Homily was given by Rev. Fr Eusebias Nyathi the Vice Rector
of St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More Major Seminary, Chishawasha. In his homily he started by thanking the community for
their love and support for the new bishop and he expressed that we were gathered in joy. And he thanked Bishop Emeritus Albert
Serrano who shepherded the Diocese for the past 14years. The main focus of the Homily was on the Gospel reading John 10:
10b – 16 (I have come so that they may have life). The reading reminds Christians that Jesus is the good shepherd and He knows
his sheep and his sheep know Him. Fr Eusebias stated that the Bishop is a man of the Gospel and he teaches the Gospel and
lives the Gospel. The Bishop is the voice of God therefore he should speak against evil and he should be the voice of the
voiceless. He advised the new Bishop to be a good shepherd to the people of Hwange and follow in the footsteps of Jesus Christ
and to core-exist with nature in inline with Laudato Si especially in the Diocese of Hwange where there is a lot of environmental
pollution and mother Earth is bleeding. He humbly asked his brother Priests to affectionately welcome the new Bishop and to work
as collaborators of Christ with him. He then encouraged the new Bishop to be accessible to all, to shepherd both the strong and
the weak and to have the people of God at the centre of his heart.
