Assumption of Mary – Tuesday, August 15 Vigil Mass at 5:00 PM
Masses at 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM
Dear Parishioners,
In the old city of Jerusalem there are two churches
named "The Dormition of Mary." One is under the auspices of
the Roman Catholic Church, the other under the auspices of the
Greek Orthodox Church. Each claims to be built on the spot
from which the Blessed Mother left this earth upon the
completion of her earthly life. There never had been any
memorial or place of burial revered by the early Christians.
However, from the beginning of the sixth century, various
churches celebrated Mary's bodily assumption into heaven since
there was no explicit reference in scripture to the assumption of
Mary into heaven. There was confusion, since many believed
that death was the result of sin, but then when it was pointed out
that Mary was preserved from sin, and Christ had suffered a
mortal death, the theologians turned to the early Fathers of the
Church to explain the assumption of Mary into heaven. Patristic
evidence gave no evidence of such an assumption, but gave as
the conclusion an argument from convenience or fittingness. It
was fitting that Jesus should have rescued his mother from the
corruption of the body and so "must have" taken her bodily into
heaven. By the middle of the seventh century, four separate
Marian feasts were observed in Rome, the Annunciation, the
Purification, the Assumption and the Nativity of Mary.
While belief in the assumption of Mary bodily to
heaven became an object of belief, it was not until November 1,
1930 that it became a dogma of faith, defined by the church and
from that time on a doctrine which must be believed. For, on
November 1,1930, Pope Pius XII most solemnly described the
crowning event in the life of Mary with these words in the
apostolic constitution Munificentissimus Deus: "The Immaculate
Mother of God, the ever virgin Mary, having completed the
course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into
heavenly glory." Thus, defining the dogma of Mary's assumption
Pope Pius wrote the final chapter of the centuries long tradition
in the belief in this mystery.
There is a tradition that the ocean waters hold a special
healing power on the Feast of the Assumption, August 15 and
many flock to the sea to uphold this tradition. We celebrate it as
a holy day of obligation to honor Mary
Sincerely,
Fr John R. Mulvehill

An Alzheimer's Poem
Do not ask me to remember.
Don’t try to make me understand.
Let me rest and know you're with me.
Kiss my cheek and hold my hand.
I'm confused beyond your concept. I am sad and sick and lost.
All I know is that I need you to be with me at all cost.
Do not lose your patience with me.
Do not scold or curse or cry.
I can't help the way I'm acting.
Can't be different though I try, just remember that I need you,
That the best of me is gone.
Please don't fail to stand beside me.
Love me "til my life is done.”
