SPS3b. Differentiate between fission and fusion.
EQ:
What are the differences between fission and fusion?
FISSION = “to divide”
FUSION = “fuse”
Activator• To take a PET (positron
emission tomography) scan, doctors inject a patient with radioisotopes. When the radioisotopes reach the part of the body to be scanned, special cameras detect the rays and emitted by them. The resulting images can be seen on a computer screen.
1. What part of the body do these images show? How do you know?
2. How is a PET scan different from an X-ray image?
Nuclear Fission = Energy & Bombs• Nuclear power plants
• Nuclear bombs
Nuclear Fission• Process of splitting a nucleus into fragments
• Releases neutrons and energy
• Neutron radiation, gamma radiation
• Can only do to very large atoms like Uranium
Nuclear Fusion• Process of joining nuclei to produce energy
• Stars
• Requires extremely high temperatures
