religion and his rituals taught to him by his parents.
He passed on his teachings to his followers and women.
Extremely influential in the native American tradition and keeping it sacred.
Francisco Baquero
Was dark-skinned or a “mestizo”, born in Buenos Aires.
Became an apprentice and opened a shop after he married.
Was known as a master shoemaker.Became an officer in a segregated military
unit.Tried to create a guild where mestizo’s like
himself could be treated fairly.
Cristobal Bequer
Born in 1693 in LimaBecame a priestBequer was known for his belligerent and
violent behavior.He had joined after being labeled a
collaborator for a murder committed by his brother.
Probably wasn’t right in the head, but died before that could be proven.
Isabel Moctezuma
Lived from 1509 to 1550.Went through several arranged marriages.Cortez took her as a mistress after being
widowed and she became pregnant.She is descended from Moctezuma II.Died in 1550.
Miguel Hernandez
Born in 1550 in Mexico City and lived during the 16th century as a free mulatto.
Became a muleteer.Had interracial and inter-social
relationships.He was thought to be very literate and
skilled.Started a successful business in freight.Died in 1604.
Hernando de Valencia
In the 1600’s, this treasury worker worked as a promoter of taxes due to the failing economy of Spain
He had a history for service in the police department
Was declared a fugitive and was written up for arrest. This followed trouble whilst working with the Viceroy.
Enrico Martinez
In 1589, this printer came from Seville and moved to Veracruz, Mexico.
Gained a reputation as a scientist through experience and study.
The start of his end came when he was jailed for sabotage.
He tried to fit in to the colonial lifestyle to no avail.

Western hemisphere became the goal for Spanish colonization.
Spain was deeply involved with exploration and conquering territories.

Formally known as Hispania.One of the most important colonial powers
of the world.Spanish literature, arts, and philosophy
shaped much of the world today.Brought disease and famine to the New
World natives, killing off entire populations and thereby reducing trade potential.
Explorer: Alvar Nunez
Spain is infamous for its explorer-conquerors known as conquistador.
Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca was a conquistador of the New World.
Was one of three survivors from the Narvaez expedition - from a party of 600.
Explorer who went out in search of gold and trade in the New World.
Explorer: Hernan Cortez
Cortez was another famous Conquistador. Cortez held an expedition of 11 ships and 500
men. Explored near the center of the Mayan and
Aztec lands. Communicated to the natives through a slave
who translated with the natives. Encounters the natives who in turn treat him as
a god. He establishes camp near the Aztecs.
Explorer: Pizarro
Pizarro lead a search for gold and fame in 1527.
Lead several voyages, the first of which ended with no treasures.
His second voyage was accompanied with 160 men and 2 ships.
Pizarro discovered the land of the Incas and established trade with them.
