Principal’s Corner
Today’s Principals Corner is a given over to a student
sports article on Boys Varsity Soccer:
By Eliza Mabey , Student Reporter
The Royals played Whitchester on Friday,
Sept 29, despite the strong rivalry, the SoRo boys
pulled ahead to win 4-3 in double overtime, preserv-
ing the Royals undefeated record at 4-0-0. Jake
Hewitt was on fire with 3 goals including the game
winning thriller. Alvaro Sanabrio contributed with a
goal and many assists. Sam Fisk in goal and his de-
fensive team worked well together for the SoRo
win. Please join SoRo fans to support the soccer
teams for Senior Night, on Thurs. October 12 before
at 4:00 pm game on the alumni field. The teams will
be competing against Twinfield, who is looking to
improve their 1-4-0 record.
When asked about the senior Royal players,
the boys coach Alex Montano, noted that Connor
Lambert, Ryan Jones, Dominick Small, and Chris
McCullough are all contributing considerable talent
to the team this year. Connor, one of the captains on
the team, was commended for his growth as a player
and leader; willing to play whatever role the coach
needs him to play. Montano said that Connor, “... is
the first player to have gone all four years with me as
the soccer coach.” He added that Ryan was another
captain who has brought positive influence to the
team, along with improving tremendously on his
skills over the summer.
Adding, “He is now one of the leading scor-
ers.” Coach indicated that Dominick is a new soccer
player and one of the team's main defenders.

Updates from the Nurse's Office:
One rule we have here at our school is "Be Responsible". Being
responsible helps make our school a place where everyone can
learn. When we're responsible, we can be trusted to do the right
thing. We help others. We clean up our messes. We admit when
we make mistakes or do the wrong thing. We focus on our
schoolwork. This week, think about how you can be responsible
and do the right thing in class, in the lunchroom and out at recess.

South Royalton School aims to help to ‘Kick-In for
Hurricane Relief’ next weekend with a day of sports related
activities at the school on October 14th. All events are by
donation of either money or goods to be contributed to a
community flooded and destroyed by a hurricane.
South Royalton School is hosting the Hurricane Relief
Day by inviting community members and challenging other
school to participate in the efforts to provide some assis-
tance other U.S. citizens during their time of despair. Citi-
zens are invited to participate in the Walk-Bike-Run, which
starts at 9 AM, or to participate in the fun soccer game of
Alumni vs. the Vermont Law School at 3:00 PM. Also
come support your local soccer and cross country teams
throughout the day.
Founder of the annual South Royalton fall sports & ser-
vice event, Frank Romeo, Athletic Director & Assistant
Principal, has been in dialog to determine a school commu-
nity in need following the hurricanes. The goal is to have
participants know how their local efforts are helping a com-
munity, an experience many SoRo students remember fol-
lowing Tropical Storm Irene. Among those in dialog are
the Vermont Principals Association (VPA) and the Vermont
State Athletic Directors Association (VSADA), more infor-
mation about the community selected will follow.
1) This week, I am mailing 2017-2018 updated Health

Royal Update from 678
Empathize! During the month of October, the middle school will focus on the value of empathy. Empathy is the ability to understand someone’s feelings. Students will explore what it means to empathize through various house group and Second Step activities this month.
What online resources are available for middle school students? All students in grades 678 have access to a variety of online resources to enhance their education.
Each student has a Google Suites for Education account. This includes access to e-mail (gmail),
Google Docs (word processing), Sheets (spreadsheets) and Slides (presentations). All four core
teachers are using Google Classroom this year. This allows teachers to post assignments,
announcements, and resources in one place online. Students have reported that this helps them stay
organized and informed.
Some other resources your student should use regularly:
● Wordly Wise (vocabulary development)
● Mrs. Wimett posts a variety of resources for math support on her website:
www.mrswimett.weebly.com . This includes the ever-popular game, Prodigy (an interactive
game which prompts students to solve math problems to win battles and earn pets and
powers).
● Typing Pal (traditional keyboarding practice)

DIGITAL LIFE / TIP SHEET / DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP / REV DATE 2016
www.commonsense.org/educators | CREATIVE COMMONS: ATTRIBUTION-NONCOMMERCIAL-SHAREALIKE
What’s the Issue? We may think of our kids’ online, mobile, and technological activities as “digital life,” but to them it’s just life. In their world, being able to connect and communicate 24/7 from just about any location is normal – and expected! Between kindergarten and fifth grade, kids go through rapid growth in learning. From playing games on their mom or dad’s cell phone, to learning how to point and click a mouse, to navigating online by themselves, kids this age are participating in a connected culture.
Why Does It Matter? The stakes are high because our kids’ technological abilities can be greater than their maturity and judgment. Having unrestricted access to information and people can result in gaining a wealth of information and experiences but also access to inappropriate content. Just as kids learn to eat properly, swim safely, or drive a car carefully, they need to know how to live in the digital world responsibly and respectfully. Their success depends on their abilities to use digital media to create, collaborate, and communicate well with others. Those who master these skills in using digital tools will benefit from the digital world’s awesome power.
common sense saysUse bookmarks and safe search. Teach your child to bookmark his or her favorite sites. This way, your child is less likely to go somewhere online you don’t want. Use safe search options on web browsers, such as Epic or DuckDuckGo, to make sure your child can search safely.
Consider using filtering and blocking software. Some parents find these tools to be useful to help protect younger children from accessing inappropriate content.
Have older siblings help. Have your older children help teach your younger children how to be responsible and safe online. Let the older ones know that you want them to help you protect their little brothers or sisters online.
Share wisdom. Kids often don’t understand how their actions affect others. We do. We teach kids to choose their words carefully, play nicely with others, and respect their teachers. Now we have to extend those lessons to a vast, invisible world. As a parent, you can translate your values into the digital world and help kids understand the implications of their actions.
Seek balance. If our kids are going to thrive with digital media, we must balance the negative with the positive, privacy with protection. As our children grow, they need more independence and privacy. But parents have to be sure their kids know how to be safe and responsible before letting them loose.
Keep an open mind. We don’t see the world the way our kids do. We don’t help our kids when we judge their lives through the lens of a non-digital world. It’s important for us to understand that our kids will spend much of their lives in a connected world, where everyone creates and communicates. We need to help them to enjoy it and learn from it.

Welcome Back!
Please keep in mind that the funds raised from this raffle are used for PTO events & activities including our end of the year celebration, “Family & School Fun Day” (FFD). The more prizes we have available, and the more tickets we sell, coupled with how many volunteers we have to help that day directly relate to what we can offer and plan for FFD. We do not receive any financial help outside of our fundraisers.
That being said, if you have a service or product that you would like to offer as a prize please let us know! All donations are greatly appreciated! Our prize list so far:
Planning for our annual raffle fundraiser has started! We will keep you updated on our growing prize list as we add more, and expect
to send home ticket packets by November 1st
so we can start selling!
