Issue No 2– Term 1, 2013 8 February 2013
Welcome back to school EVERYONE after a disruptive start to the year due to the
floods. Uniform
We are very pleased with the way the students are settling in and responding to
some changes that have been made. The number of students in uniform is
outstanding, which is a great indicator of their positive attitude and willingness to be
involved in the school. Black leather shoes are a compulsory part
of our school uniform as dictated by the Department of Education and it is good to
see that this is being taken on board by the students.
School ‘bucket hats’, which have been introduced by the SRC, are proving to be a
popular purchase amongst the students and staff. They cost $10 and can be purchased from the Library.
Student Numbers
We are in the process of determining our student numbers for 2013. The disruption
over this past week has made this a difficult task. However we seem to be
holding steady on our expectations for this year.
New Technology
Something to keep an eye out for in the next few weeks will be our new electronic
notice board at the front of the school. It will replace the one that is there at present
which will be moved down to the McGuren Street entrance. Also there will be a number of TV monitors around the school
for students to read current notices. We hope that this will improve our
communication around the school.
Canteen The Canteen is desperately looking for
volunteers to assist in food preparation and /or serving. If you could assist in this area
or have a relative or friend who could help it would be very much appreciated. You would also find it to be a rewarding
experience. Contact the school if you can help.
2013 Homework Planner
Kids and families run more smoothly when there's a plan. The 2013 homework and
study calendar includes key dates and school holidays. You can print it out month
by month, or by the whole year. Any student can talk to their Year Advisers or
the Deputy Principals for further assistance in this area. Find out more at

homework-planner Parents Pool Their Tips
Ask your child to write all their teachers' names on their timetables and make a copy
for the fridge. If they have a mobile phone, have them take a photo of their timetable
so they have it with them all the time. Read more tips from experienced parents:

Do you want to become Quicker and Smarter? NOW IS THE TIME TO REGISTER YOUR INTEREST IN THE QUICKSMART PROGRAM. QuickSmart will improve automatic recall of
basic number facts. This in turn improves student confidence to attempt new work.
QuickSmart has been successful with both B and C stream Mathematics students from Years 7-10. Just ask any of the 120 students
from last year’s program. Many students have been placed in higher level Mathematics
classes as a result. Students in the QuickSmart program are allocated a tutor and work twice a week with
them using flashcards, speedsheets, graphing and content work.
There are limited places in the program. A computer CAAS assessment determines if a student is eligible. Students can register their
interest by popping into G14- the QuickSmart Room- and parents can register interest for
their child by phoning the QuickSmart room mobile 0447421460. More information about this program can be found on the school
website OR

Drama Year 11 and 12
Drama went on an excursion to Sydney to see
'OnStage'. This was a showcase
of exemplary work in performance, scriptwriting, video and design
by Year 12, 2012 HSC students. We travelled to Sydney by train and saw
three shows at the Seymour Centre. The first two shows were performed by 2012 HSC students and they were exceptional. Students
performed in a variety of styles and used many different techniques, providing much
inspiration for SGHS students. The third show was 'Writers OnStage/OnScreen, where professional actors performed scripts written
by 2012 HSC students. These plays showcased incredible writing skills. The video
dramas were phenomenal as well. All SGHS students demonstrated exemplary behavior throughout the entire excursion.
Thank you to all students,

Take a Stand Together 2013 National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence -Friday 15 March 2013 is yet another big year, and plans are
well underway for school activities for Term 1. On Friday 15 March 2013 our school will
be taking part in the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence. The day, now in its third year, is an initiative of all
Australian education ministers. At our school, we are dedicated to creating supportive
school environments, free from bullying, harassment and violence. By working together as a school community, we are
sending clear messages to young people that bullying and violence, in or outside of school,
is not okay - at any time. Please note this date in your calendars. I will keep you informed about our school plans
and activities to celebrate the day. Also attached to this newsletter are 5 simple
tips to stay safe online, (above all on Facebook). Help your child/ren prevent social media fails in 2013, and who knows you may
also find some helpful advice for your own use of social media!
