User friendly The large backlit display with a mirror effect is
excellent to read in sunlight. The backlight is only
neededindarkenvironments.
Theinstrumentisdesignedtobeoperatedbythe
same hand that holds the instrument. There is no
need for a stylus. Real keys ensures tactile feed-
backtotheuser.Thedustandsplashproofrubber
coversfortheconnectorsandSDcardtogetherwith
the high friction coating on rear cover ensures an
optimumgripandusercomfort.A rangeof factory
setup together with the possibility for the user to

Memory – Storage handlingThe instrument contains both an internal memory
andanexchangeableSDmemorycard.Theinternal

On-board noise generatorThe Nor140 is equipped with an on-board noise
generator supplying both white and pink
noise. During the level and reverberation time
measurements,thegeneratoristurnedonandoffin
synchronizationwiththeactualmeasurements.
Complete reportsThe Nor140 building acoustics measurements are
seamlessly transferred to a PC for further post-
processing.Thefullsoundinsulationreportisgener-
atedbyuseof theNorBuild softwarepackage,and
thefinal reportsheetsarecalculated inaccordance
withISO140/717,ASTMorothernationalstandards.
Remote measurement controlForfullPCcontroloftheactualmeasurementprocess,
the NorBuild software may be extended with the
CtrlBuildmodule.Byuseofthismodule,themeas-
urementsmayevenbemadebyscanning through
the frequency rangeusing1/3-octavebandfiltered
noise.Thisfeatureishandywhenbackgroundnoise

Swept-Sine measurement techniqueThe recent ISO18233 Standard opens up for use
of alternative measurement techniques for sound
insulation testing. Hence, the Nor140 is optionally
available with the new Swept-Sine measurement
method.Thisnew technique isusefulwhenmeas-
urementshavetobeperformedinbackgroundnoise
conditionswheretraditionaltechniquewillnotenable
anymeasurementstobemadeatall.
Swept-Sine techniquemay also be used for the
measurementofextremelyshortreverberationtimes.

Sound powerSound power level may be calculated from sound
pressurelevelmeasurementsusingalmostanytype
ofsoundlevelmeter.However,themethodsdescribed
in the different standards involve quite a lot of
calculationbefore thefinalsoundpowerfigurecan
bereported.
TheNor140supportsmeasurementsandcalcu-
lationsaccordingtoISO3746onboard.Yousimply
specify measurement surface, its dimensions, the
location of yourmeasurement object (on the floor,
againstahard reflectingwallor inacorner),apply
the correction factors and start your measure-
ment.Thesoundpowerwillthenbecalculatedand
displayedinatabularform.
For measurement in accordance to other
standards in the ISO374x series or similar stand-
ards,thePCpostprocessingprogramNorPowerisa
perfect tool. The program guides you through the
measurement process and reports the data as
described in the standard.NorPower is a valuable
toolforengineersworkingwithproductdevelopment,
product control or certification. A special software
extension allows the user to remotely control
theNor140, themicrophoneboomNor265and the
wholemeasurementprocessfromthePC.
Audiometer calibrationAudiometry is the testing of hearing ability. Audio-
metrictestsdetermineasubject’shearinglevelswith
thehelpofanaudiometer.Forreliabletestresults,it
isessentialthataudiometersareregularlycalibrated
inaccordancewiththerelevantstandards.
Nor140 can be equipped with the option for
audiometer calibration which provides the ability
foracousticalmeasurementof frequencyand level
of the test signal as well as harmonic distortion.
Measurementtakeonly2secondsandisperformed
in an intuitiveway presenting the 1/3 octave band
spectrum together with a result table containing
valuesforfrequencyofthetesttone,levelofthetest
tone,LZ,eqandharmonicdistortion.
Other applications
Speech intelligibility – STIPAThespeechtransmissionindex,STI,hasshowntobe
avaluabletoolforobjectiveassessmentofthespeech
intelligibility.ThebasisfortheSTI-indexisthatspeech
intelligibility is toa largeextent isbasedon theslow
amplitudemodulationofoctavebandsoundlevelsdue
totheacousticenvironmentinthetestarea.
Asimplifiedversionof theSTI-metric,knownas
STIPA, is anoption in theNor140 instrument. The
method is made according to the requirements
in IEC60268-16 (2003-05): Sound system equip-
ment – Part 16: Objective rating of speech intel-
ligibility by speech transmission index. The option
includes an audio-CD with the required excitation
signal. The STIPA-method is suitable for assess-
ingspeechintelligibilityinroomsorauditoriaaswell
asforpublicaddresssystems.Itmayingeneralbe
used as a replacement for RASTI which normally
shouldbeappliedonlyforroomacousticmeasure-
ments.TheresultispresentedasaSTI-valueanda
CIS-value.Thelatterisnormallyusedforassessing
the quality of sound systems for emergency
purposes(IEC60849).
Each measurement lasts for about 13 seconds
andtheSTI-valueisdisplayedonthescreentogether
withoctave-bandlevelsandthemodulationindices.
Thisallowstheresult tobecorrectedforadditional
backgroundnoiseeitherbytheinstrumentorlaterby
post-processingthemeasureddata.
