Across North America, last minute deals are being waved at all able-bodied men and women to grab their boards and ski gear, and to head to their nearby or distant mountain resort to enjoy the last few weeks of the season. Last week Mammoth received 2 feet and is sporting some really fun Spring conditions.
Winter Park has benefited from several inches here or there and continued cool weather. The temperature at Snowbird favors a longer season, and Killington (VT) sports the best conditions of the season! Resorts in and around Banff are going crazy with continuing snow and cold weather. Whistler and Squaw Valley sport very acceptable Spring conditions.
Liftopia.com and others are waving tantalizing offers. So, if you’re able, this might be a good time to seriously look at spending some time with students on Spring Break! (Oh? Been there, done that?)
While many northerly resorts are open for business, our local mountains, unless a big dumper surprises us, have shifted gears towards hikers, mountain bikers, and other summer activities.
OTHER ACTIVITIES for Your Club’s 75th Year now focus on recruiting a few Members for the Board, planning next year’s weeklong trip, and a few social events for the summer.
Did I mention that we need a few Members for the Board?
Now is the time to accept a nomination as candidate for Treasurer, Breeze Editor, Ways and Means Chair or Member-at-Large, all essential positions for the well-being of Your Club!
Nominations will be accepted for all Board Positions prior to the 10-day mail out and return period for ballots. So, come to a General Meeting (1st Wednesday, free pizza) or Board Meeting (2nd Wednesday), or contact Craig Gibson or me.
Let me hear You say “I wanna do it!”

Weekend Trips with Roberto By Roberto Tovar
Mammoth in March was beautiful, sunny skies and little wind. There were brief snow flurries on Friday that lasted about half an hour. The snow conditions were the best I’ve seen all season. So Cal Championships were held that weekend with yours truley finishing first in 7 Vet men. Club members on the trip were Emily Bennett, Catherine Singer, Ron Scholz and Roberto Tovar. A really enjoyable time was had by all.
Week Trip With ShepBy Bob Shepard
The LBSC Ski Club joined three other LA Council Ski Clubs on the Park City ski week trip: Century City Ski Club, Space Park Ski Club, and Eldelweiss Ski Club. It was a great week of skiing with 72 total members! The Park City Peaks hotel and the Jupiter & Parkview condos were very nice places to spend the week. Members enjoyed joint dinners and après drinks throughout their stay. The joint clubs Nastar races came off with good results, and a lot of the Long Beach and Space Park members won Park City Nastar metals. The fastest male racer came from Long Beach Ski Club: Mark Malan, winning the top place with a Silver metal. The fastest female racer came from the Space Park Club’s Sheila Szymanski, also winning a Silver Nastar metal. One of the first time LBSC racers won his first Bronze Nastar metal, LBSC member Ken Gregg. After the race we all enjoyed a fantastic Mexican lunch
in our own private room in the base Payday Loft.
We even got a little new snow during the week which made the Park City Mountain Alpine Roller Coaster and Flying Eagle Zip Line events a whole lot of fun for all who joined in on the night’s activities. The final night group dinner at Grub Steaks Restaurant was very well attended. Members enjoyed a good steak or fish dinner, with a wonderful rich chocolate dessert.
Start planning ahead, because the Long Beach Ski Club and the joint LA Ski Council clubs are working on the 2015 week ski trip to Telluride Colorado. This will be a great trip to one of the best Cowboy Ski towns in the USA, with wonderful skiing opportunities and very good restaurants to be enjoyed during the ski week. You can even set up a day of horse back riding during your week. We’re looking at the Start planning time to join the LBSC next year 2015 in Telluride, the last week of January, if we can get that week reserved.

RacingBy Steve Brown
The fourth race weekend of the season was a good one. We had spring conditions, good snow coverage, blue skies and warm weather. It was good to see Ken Kawahara back. The recovery from his shoulder injury must be going well as he finished second in his race. Terry Seaton had another good weekend. After winning first place on Saturday and earing her second strike for the year she was moved up to level 5 Vet Female. Then she went on to win the race on Sunday at her new level too. Roberto took first place in both his races too. Well done!
If you haven’t raced in couple of years you are considered a First Time Racer (FTR). It was fun to see one of our own long time LBSC racers back in the gates this weekend. I am referring to Gary Longaberger. He was reestablishing (EST) his handicap so he was not eligible for a medal but his handicap from the race on Saturday earned him a spot in the 2 Vet Men class for next time. Not bad, considering he had not raced in a while. ULLR 4 was a Giant Slalom race with 2 runs where they counted the best run of the 2, and ULLR 5 was a one run Slalom race. These were both part of the Southern California Championships held in March. Here are the results: Class Name ULLR 4, Place ULLR 5, Place SKILL 6/5 VET F Terrie Seaton 1 1 SKILL 2 VET M Gary Seaton 3 2 SKILL 4 VET M Ken Kawahara 2 -‐ SKILL 4 VET M Steve Brown 3 2 SKILL 7 VET M Roberto Tovar 1 1 FTR UPPER Gary Longaberger EST -‐
Long Beach finished third in both of the races and finished third place overall. Here are the season totals for the five races: Place Club Points 1 Aerospace 366 2 Century City 313 3 Long Beach 118 4 4 Seasons 69
There is only one more race scheduled for this year and it’s a big one, the Far West Championship: Sat 4/5, Slalom, 1 run; Sun 4/6, Giant Slalom, 2 runs, combined time. They are planning a two hour clinic the day before and the cost is $30. Meet in Roma’s café (in the main lodge near the cafeteria) on Friday 4/4 at noon to sign up. The clinic is from 1 to 3 pm. See you on the race course!

Thank you everyone for getting people to join! We passed our membership goal with 62 members! If you haven’t seen the newly released member roster sent out to your email recently, check it out! Use it to contact other members to set up rides to the hill once it starts snowing again!
Speaking of which... Lets pray for some snow to fall! California needs the water and we skiers need the powder!
Snow is finally on the forecast so let’s hope the weather man knows what he’s talking about. If it doesn’t pick up at mammoth, get excited for the Park City week trip, because I’ll let you in on alittle secretUtahdoes have snow!
Happy turns

As expected, our annual St Patrick’s Day Party was well attended with over 25 LBSC Members. As attendees devoured 2 large corned beef briskets, prepared by Muriel Sasaki, everyone agreed her recipe was over the top. Many members brought delicious appetizers and main dishes.
For April, we’ll have wine tasting at the Stave Bar, located in downtown Long Beach on the Promenade. The day will be April 19th. See flyer for details.
Our annual Dinner Dance, held Sunday, May 18th at the Best Western Golden Sail Hotel. Cocktails begin at 6pm and dinner will be served at 7. Flyer with details will be sent out by April 15th.

Counting with Cherri’By Cherri Gregg
WAYS & MEANSBy Ken Gregg
Well, the 2013-2014 ski season is starting to wind-down. Hopefully, you have had a chance to hit the slopes this season and enjoy this great sport. I believe that your LBSC has one more trip planned to Mammoth for early April. Due to some miscommunications there
were no raffles held during the General Membership Meeting on March 5th. Please accept my apologies. I was unable to attend this meeting but I understand that there was one new/non-member at the meeting. So, we definitely owe that individual a bottle of wine. If you all would please help me remember to make this happen, it would be greatly appreciated.
Our next General Membership Meeting is scheduled for April 2nd, at which time we will again attempt to conduct a raffle to give away a nice bottle of wine to one of the non-members or recent new members in attendance. This will be a “free” raffle. Any non-member or recent new member in attendance at the meeting will be provide a “free” raffle ticket for the chance of winning the bottle of wine.
In addition, we are also planning to conduct a raffle for everyone’s participation & enjoyment (assuming that enough people show up). This however, will not be a “free” raffle. Tickets will need to be purchased for this raffle.
I still have two requests to pass on to all of our members:
1. It is time to start planning for our annual dinner-dance which will be held on Sunday, May 18th. I am soliciting items to be used as raffle items, door prizes or silent auctions prizes. Should any member have an item or items that they would like to donate please contact Ken or simply bring them to our next General Membership meeting.
2. As this will be my 3rd year as the Ways & Means officer, I am looking to pass on the torch to another member. So please volunteer to man this post.
