President’s Report – Warren Ripple

Just a reminder; our annual picnic is on Sunday, August 6 at Wingfoot

State Park. We will again have the Pine Tree shelter, and I’m hoping

for some sunshine to go along with the picnic. The club will provide

beverages, hamburgers, hotdogs, sausages and beans. Members are

asked to bring a dish or dessert to share. At the picnic, we will have a

brief meeting to go over social events, ski trips and the usual stuff.

Come on out and enjoy the park and the company of good friends.

The constitution committee completed a review of the club’s

constitution, by-laws and policies. As required in the constitution, two

consecutive newsletters will have complete details on the

recommended revisions for the membership’s review before a vote on

the changes to the constitution and by-laws can occur. The committee

reviewed the constitution and by-laws, as well as the policies. While

changes to the policies do not require a vote of the membership, they

will also be included for your review. The constitution committee

(Betty Wise, Bill Nappi, Esther DeTray, George Csepegi, Jim Kovach,

Judy Ripple, Les Wise, Linda Slicker, and Suzanne Nappi) did a great

job of reviewing the documents and addressing members’ concerns. I

appreciate the way everyone worked together!

Coming up on September 12, we will have our first business meeting

at the Spaghetti Warehouse. We will be meeting in an area in front of

the bar, as you enter the restaurant.

This fall, Buckeye Sports is planning a big event at their Sports Center

on State Road in Peninsula. There will be ski equipment vendors and

“double Buckeye Bucks” deals. Glen Plake will be on hand for the

festivities. The dates for this event are September 22-24. Buckeye

would like to have Goodyear Ski Club work a swap shop into these

festivities and benefit from a much larger anticipated crowd.

Unfortunately, this timing is one week earlier than in previous years,

and Judy and I have made other plans for a western hiking vacation

that conflicts with those days. I don’t think it’s fair to ask members to

do an event that the club president and marketing officer can’t work.

I’ve advised Buckeye Sports of my conflict and promised an answer

after the picnic. My feeling is that it might be better to take a year off

from the Swap Shop and see how things go. I’ve confirmed that option

is okay with Buckeye. If you have some thoughts you’d like to share

on this, please do so. >>>

October 1 marks the start of the 2017-2018 membership. I will have extra club membership forms at the

picnic, and members may find it convenient to renew their membership at the picnic. I will also have extra

trip forms if anyone decides to sign up for a ski trip at the picnic. Lastly, we will have club membership ID

cards at the picnic.

There are a couple of great western ski trips for your consideration included in this newsletter. I have

heard that the Copper Mountain trip is full, so it is wait list only for that trip. While there is still some

beautiful summer weather ahead, it’s never too early to THINK SNOW!!! for the coming ski season.

Please join us! ~ Summer Picnic at Wingfoot Lake ~ Sunday, August 6 at noon

Don’t miss out on the fun! The club will provide the meat, drinks, condiments and tableware. Please bring

a side dish or dessert to share. Use the BBQ grill to cook hot dogs and burgers to your liking or take

advantage of the “volunteer” cook. If you would like to bring guests, the charge for any non-member is

only $5.00 per person. There will be games to play along with the 50/50 raffle and other giveaways.

In conjunction with our support of the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank, boxes will be at the picnic to

collect non-perishable food items, for anyone wishing to donate. We will take any items collected to the

Foodbank when we volunteer on August 18.

Wingfoot Lake State Park has great facilities for a good time:

paved walking trails tennis courts 18-hole miniature golf

playgrounds basketball courts 18-hole disc golf course

horseshoe pits bocce ball courts golf driving range

baseball fields badminton courts pontoon boat rentals

dog park volleyball courts paddle boat rentals

Please note: You can fish for bluegill and bass from the shore, but it requires a valid Ohio fishing license.

Trip Officer’s Report – Jim Kovach

Hope to see you at the club picnic to update you on our trips, but in case you can’t make it, here’s some

ski trip info.

The Copper Mountain trip is FULL with 32 participants, but there is no one on the waiting list at this time.

The Whitefish trip still has plenty of spaces available. I know it’s only August, but some of your fellow club

members have already jumped at the club trip opportunities. See the flyers here in the newsletter for

more information.

We are looking at the Holiday Valley at the Inn trip to be February 11-12, Sunday-Monday or Feb 11-13,

Sunday-Tuesday. I’d like your input. Last year, the one-night stay and 2 days skiing cost you $195. This

year, the cost should be about $20 higher, although we don’t have firm pricing on lodging, lifts, or bus at

this point. Would anyone be interested in extending the trip by a day and possibly adding about $100?

I’m hoping we can generate some interest in doing three one-day trips this year. Tentatively, we are

looking at Friday, January 6 at either Peek n’ Peak or Kissing Bridge; Seven Springs on Friday, Jan 26;

and Friday, February 2 at HoliMont. Our guess is that Fridays might be the best days for our group.

However, we are early in the planning, and we can make an adjustment to any or all of these dates to

accommodate a Wednesday trip, if that works better for a large contingent of our members. PLEASE, let

me know your feelings/preferences. I’ve asked for bus quotes covering any day of the week already. I

hope to have all the trip planning and pricing wrapped up by Sept. 1.

It’s not too early to start thinking about SNOW! - Jim

Sarah’s Vineyard Wine Social

A dozen GSC members and friends gathered at the new pavilion at Sarah’s Vineyard on Thursday, July 13

for our second wine social of the summer. It was a sultry evening, but we enjoyed the camaraderie while

we sampled a variety of wines “on tap” and a tasty selection of wood-fired pizzas. – Suzanne Nappi

We had a full slate of ten teams competing

in the golf scramble on Saturday, July 14. It

was a pleasant day at Arrowhead Golf Club

in North Canton, with just enough cloud

cover to keep it from getting too hot. This

year we had a “double shotgun” start, with

two teams starting at each of five holes. We

munched on hotdogs and chips before hitting

the fairways; afterwards, we enjoyed a great

steak dinner. Winners were announced and

prizes awarded. Many thanks to Paul Hanna

for organizing a great event!

Thanks to Windmill Lakes, Arrowhead Golf,

and Firestone Public, who donated rounds of

golf for our top three teams. Also, thanks to
