1. What is two-factor authentication?
Two-factor Authentication, also known as Multi-factor Authentication (MFA) or multi-step
verification, adds another layer of security, supplementing the username and password model
with a code that only a specific user has access to (typically sent to something they have
immediately to hand). This authentication method can be easily summed up as a combination of
"something you have and something you know”.
Bane NOR requires two-factor authentication using eg. Office 365 and Citrix, when you log on
from other PCs than a Bane NOR computer, or when you log on from a mobile phone.
It is recommended to use two-factor authentication via the Microsoft Authenticator app. See
below for setup on both app and SMS.
2. Set up two-factor authentication when imposed
A policy is introduced that requires everyone to register for two-factor authentication. If you sign in to
Office 365 and get the following message, it is because you are hit by the policy:
You can postpone the registration of two-factor authentication for up to 14 days, or do so now. To
setup two factor now, click Next, and then you can follow further instructions in either Setting up two-
factor authentication via app or Setting up two-factor authentication via SMS.
