We believe that ownership of lighting extends beyond the initialpurchase of the products themselves. We, therefore, offercustomers a wide range of support services to ensure that theirlighting installations not only meet basic operational and safetyrequirements on day one, but will continue to do so throughouttheir lifetime.
From training and support on how to select products for aspecific application through to the provision of routine on-sitetesting and maintenance, you can be sure that Cooper Lightingis ready to support you, whatever your need.
Emergency lighting schemes give rise to some very specificneeds and place a significant burden on the designated‘responsible person’ of a building. Ensuring that the schemecomplies with the latest standards and is tested and maintainedregularly is a legal requirement. Failure to do so can lead tounlimited fines and even imprisonment.
Cooper Lighting is a leading manufacturer of mains and emergency lighting productsfor the commercial and industrial buildings market. Our products are designed to thelatest lighting industry standards and manufactured to the highest levels of quality.
In March 2011, BAFE (British Approvals for Fire Equipment)extended the scope of its SP203 accreditation scheme to coverthe design, installation, commissioning and maintenance ofemergency lighting equipment. Cooper Lighting was the firstemergency lighting manufacturer to gain accreditation to the newSP203-4 scheme and our service team is fully trainedto inspect, test and maintain emergency lighting to the lateststandards. So, from a one-off visit to identify any deficiencieswith your system, to a routine program of testing andmaintenance, you can rest assured that your emergency lightingsystem won’t let you down.
This brochure explains the range of services we offer and howyou can access them. Some of the services are provided freeof charge, while others will be included as part of an overallquotation to supply the equipment. Where we do charge forservices, our rates are extremely competitive and we are happyto discuss with you in advance what the costs will be.

Emergency Lighting
CIBSE approved CPD seminar
The Emergency Lighting CPDseminar gives an overview of therequirements of BS5266, how todesign an emergency lightingscheme, requirements for exit signs, data authentication and theimportance of quality. We comparealternative types of emergencylighting and the use of automatictesting. The seminar is relevant toanyone designing emergency lightinginstallations.
Central Battery Systems
CIBSE approved CPD seminar
The Central Battery Systems seminargives an insight into the design, application, standards, regulationsand preferred code of practice relatingto central battery systems and thetesting/maintenance requirementscovered by the Fire Safety Order. The presentation is aimed at consultantsand engineers looking to develop anunderstanding of central battery systemswith a view to becoming a productspecialist.
LED Lighting
RIBA approved CPD seminar
LED is fast becoming the light sourceof the future, so the LED Lighting CPDseminar helps clients understand thebasics of the technology, theadvantages and disadvantages of LED,what to look for, how to specify LEDproducts, and how to design with LEDs.The seminar is aimed at architects andconsultants wanting to understand thedifferent types of LEDs and how best touse them.
To help customers achieve a greater understanding of modern
lighting technology, Cooper Lighting offers approved CPD training
seminars in three key areas. Each seminar lasts one hour and can
be held at customers’ premises during lunchtime breaks to reduce
the impact on working time.

This training will ensure that you are competentto carry out the testing and maintenance ofyour emergency lighting system in accordancewith the latest legislation.
While our central battery systems and addressable testing
systems for emergency lighting are designed to be as
straightforward as possible, many users find it beneficial to
undergo some initial structured training on the correct operation
and maintenance of the systems. This can take place either at
your premises or at our Doncaster training facility.
Operation & Maintenance Training
Through presentations, hand-outs and hands-on experience,
we provide you with a complete overview of the system,
an introduction to its operation and functionality, guidance
on the use of fault-diagnosis charts, details of maintenance
requirements and an understanding of the installation
requirements for any future expansion.

central battery systems, Cooper Lighting offers a pre-
installation site visit to discuss the finer points of system
installation and to guard against any potential pitfalls.
Primarily aimed at contractors’ project managers and installation
teams, these visits cover issues such as cable types, data loop
configuration, addressing of devices (Easicheck 2 and CEAG),
device and system operation and system limitations.
This service is included free-of-charge for customers ordering
two or more panels for the same site. To discuss your
requirements in detail, please contact the service department on
01302 303349. You might also want to consider our complete

By law, building managers or owners have a responsibility
to ensure that their emergency lighting systems are
maintained in an efficient state, in efficient working order
and in good repair. Failure to comply is taken very
seriously by the courts and has already resulted in fines
of up to £500,000 and jail terms of up to 20 months.
The designated ‘responsible person’ also has to make sure
that anyone working on the system is a competent engineer.
As this is generally difficult to assess, BAFE (British
Approvals for Fire Equipment) has introduced a new scheme
that enables companies to receive third-party certification
proving their competence in the design, installation,
commissioning and maintenance of emergency lighting
systems. (BAFE operates a similar accreditation scheme for
fire alarm companies.)
Cooper Lighting was the first emergency
lighting manufacturer to gain accreditation to the new
BAFE SP203-4 scheme, so when you call us out to check
your emergency lighting system, you can be 100% confident
that our qualified engineers know exactly what they are
doing and will give you completely trustworthy advice.
Working from the BS 5266-10 checklist, we will provide you
with a report either stating that the system complies with the
regulations or identifying any deficiencies and advising on
the necessary remedial action.
For complete peace of mind, call the service department
today or speak to your local sales contact to arrange an
inspection of your emergency lighting system. We will also
be happy to talk to you about regular testing and
maintenance of your system (see page 9).

standard and colour changing luminaires can be used
when a dramatic effect is required. For larger projects,
we can produce 3 dimensional imagery and building
walk-throughs. To complete our design service, Cooper
Lighting can include emergency lighting complemented by

Testing and Maintenance
Emergency lighting is first and foremost a life-safety
system, designed to help occupants evacuate a building
without injury in the event of a mains power failure. It must,
therefore, be maintained in a peak state of readiness. If the
emergency lighting fails to function properly, then lives
could be put at risk, and organisations and responsible
individuals can be prosecuted.
To help prevent such situations arising, the Fire Safety Order
places a mandatory obligation on building occupiers to carry
out regular testing and inspection of emergency lighting
systems in accordance with the requirements of BS 5266.
It is not enough to fit an emergency lighting system and then
just forget about it. Cooper Lighting, therefore, offers a full
preventative maintenance package for all its emergency
lighting systems. The company was the first emergency
lighting manufacturer to receive third-party accreditation
under the new BAFE SP203-4 scheme, which provides a
way for organisations to demonstrate their competence in
the design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of
emergency lighting systems.
The test regime of BS 5266 requires a monthly operational test
of the emergency lighting, which may be carried out by users if
they are capable of doing so, plus a full-duration discharge test
once a year. The annual test should be performed by a
competent engineer, who must ensure that the occupants of
the building remain safe both during the test and while the
system recharges.
We have a team of trained, highly skilled engineers available
across the UK, and our service and maintenance agreements
can be tailored to suit your individual requirements. At each
scheduled maintenance visit, we will provide you with a system
status report and update your service log. These records can
then be used to demonstrate that your system has been tested
according to BS 5266. We will also identify any faults with the
system and provide quotations for rectification work.
With a Cooper Lighting service contract, your emergency lighting system will betested and maintained by skilledengineers who know the equipmentinside out. It’s hassle-free and you willhave complete peace of mind that youhave discharged your legalresponsibilities.
