The main component in the cause of our current environmental crisis is contributed to our present appliance of globalization – that is, we are forced to buy into a global market, a waste-generating model which snowballs into a host of ecological problems, instead of redesigning our daily systems to be localized and closed loop models. A collegiate setting, where the atmosphere is experimental and students are eager for revolution and change, will become a logical forerunner in the redesign of these conventional systems. With the goal of self sufficiency, the CSU
San Luis Obispo Architecture building and its included people and culture will become an experiment in how proximate a micro-community can get to a closed-loop, regenerative model.
To achieve this community driven model, the proposal will add to the existing Architecture building student housing, urban farming, systems to support daily life [energy generation, waste treatment, etc] and additional school-related facilities.

Luminary

Sandy Stannard
This luminary pays homage to discovering hidden potentials. Built around the negative space of parts cut out, the salvaged glow sculpts beauty out of an otherwise waste product of industry. The original purpose of the steel was a material medium used to fabricate 8 pieces. After it fulfilled this use, the steel then became a piece of discarded trash. It rusted and warped, laying forgotten in a pile of
scraps. The salvaged glow aims to close the loop on this single material so that all its atoms are utilized.
Because the cut-outs left a poetic expression, the steel slab was preserved in its found form. It acts as a sacred screen filtering the glow. It is held up by wooden arms inspired by a human gesture of support.

A multi-use facility to be used congruently by the U.S. Coast Guard and The City of Morro Bay’s Harbor Department. Located in The City of Morro Bay the proposed building will be the “eyes” of the Harbor maintaining safety, reporting danger, and performing search and rescues. Therefore, transparent emphasis is placed upon spaces which require uninterrupted visual access to the Bay.
Also part of the equation is the public. Needing access to both the Coast Guard and Harbor Department, the importance of the public in this facility is also highlighted by transparency. An open space housing “sail” shading devices further ties the community in with the operations of the Coast Guard, Harbor Department and the outlying Bay.

The Senior Community Center can be separated into 6 pre-fabricated modules that fit on the back of a semi truck-bed to be transported on site and then assembled.
The “kit of parts” is comprised of standard dimensions, thus reducing waste and increasing efficiency in construction.
The interior keeps flexibility in mind. The space can be reconfigured to best suite the user and actvity’s needs. This is accomplished via sliding walls.

PFA Cinema Complex

A new building for the Pacific Film Archive on the edge of UC Berekely campus. Expressions of irregularity, analagous to campus patterns, are seen in copper on the surface. In contrast, the grid patterns of the cityscape are expressed in simplicity of organization and structure. The result is a
blending of student functions (learning) with that of the community (entertainment).
The PFA Cinema Complex houses five theaters, including a grand theater with a mezzanine. Also included are classrooms, film learning centers, and retail.

I entered this 4 unit project into a digital world - constructing from schematic plans and sections a model in SketchUp Pro 8. Paying close attention to the project’s actual material palette, landscaping proposal, and surrounding environment I rendered these two perspectives for Architectural Review Board approval.
