CHICAGO May 9 Much discontent onthe part of lay members over the action ofyofiterdfly was evident in the opening hoursof the Methodist General Conference thismorning at the Auditorium

Judging from the expressions of the laydelegates in the halls and corridors beforethe opening of the session there was feltto be but little consistency in the actionwhich excluded the laymen from tho An-nual when they were allowedto attend tho General Conference Theproceedings of the morning bore evidenceof the strength of this feeling and the lay-men of the conference took but little partin the work

Devotional exercises were begun at 835-a m although announced for S30 DrJ R T Grey of Philadelphia was incharge The exercises were short how-ever and the business session opened ontime at 9 oclock Bishop Foss took thepresiding chair

Although the discussion of the report ofthe special commission appointed Jouryears ago to revise the organic law of thechurch was far from being completed yes-terday Bishop Foes ordered the usual rollcall for the presentation of memorials ap-peals petitions resolutions and committeereports and over an hour was taken upwith a large number of responses from thedelegates The report from the commission-on revision of the organic law wastaken up therefore until after 10 oclock

The report of the Treasurer of the For-eign Mission Society Dr Homer Eaton ofNew York showed that 516361933 hadbeen received and disbursed during thelast four years
