GREETINGS NOBLES AND LADIES OF ANAH It is a real pleasure for me to tell you how proud I am to be allowed to serve Anah Shriners as their Potentate for 2014.2014. The kindness you have extended to both Carolyn and I for many years has been heartwarming. I wish that Tom could be here to serve as your Potentate but that wasn’t meant to be. It wasn’t in God’s plan, so now we have to carry on and do our best, so once again I ask for your support throughout the year 2014. I’m sure if we all pull together we will l be successful in all our endeavors as we help children in 2014 in honor of Tom, this was to be is motto for the year. I want to congratulate Ill, Sir Lee and Lady Peggy for their leadership and all the success They have had throughout the year 2013. My thanks to them also for their help and assistance to Carolyn and I as we try to catch up with all that has been happening during these past years when I have not been involved with the Divan. It was great to have our families with

us on this special occasion, They have all been very supportive during my years in the Shrine. I’m sure they believe in the Shrine philanthropy as I do. I do want to thank Ill. Sir Dan Gove and Lady Nancy and their Divan and Ladies. Most worshipful A. James Ross, the Most Worshipful Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Maine an d Queen Theresa Pot-vin, Queen of Ankh Temple for sharing this weekend with us, truly making this a special event. On behalf of all Anah Shriners I want to welcome the candidates of the January 2014 Robert Whited Class. You have just become members of the world’s greatest philanthropy. I hope the sponsors of these new mem-bers will introduce them to members of their clubs and units, making them wel-

come. I want to thank Noble Jerry Harvey, our Anahgram Editor for these past 30 plus years which he has served the Nobles of Anah so very well. I congratulate him and wish him much happiness as he enjoys the coming years as our Editor Emeritus. It was nice to have Mrs. Edwina Whited and her family with us as we honored her late husband Robert, naming our January class of candidates in his name. Bob was a great friend to many of us. Some of the events coming up are Anah’s 2nd Section Party on March 8th, the mid-winter Northeast in Springfield, Massa-chusetts., March 13 – 16th, Nobles and Ladies Night at the Aroostook Shrine Club in Presque Isle on March 22nd and on April 5th our 5 o’clock somewhere party. These are just a few of the upcom-ing events. Again thanks for allowing Carolyn and I the pleasure of representing you as the Potentate and First Lady of Anah in 2014.

Yours in the faith

Dick HallettPotentate of Anah Shriners

NobleLloyd DayReporter

Well the Photo Unit had its annual run by of the train and a couple of reruns. Mer-lin Clark is the new boss, Shooter; Chet Davis the new Secretary /Treasurer, and yours truly is the reporter. This was the only job I’ve never had in the unit and was in the bathroom when they filled this post. I’ll need some help from some of you unit members who show up at events, especial-ly up in the “county”. We expect to be out in force at the Janu-ary Ceremonial to welcome Richard Hal-lett to Potentate! Talk about a re-run, I re-member what a great time we had when he was Potentate 2006. What a guy to step in at a tough time like this. We expect to have a grand time in Presque Isle. We are always looking for new mem-bers. As long as you have a digital camera and know one end of it from the other, we would like to hear from you. Our require-ments are few and we have a lot of fun especially at Circus time. On a sad note, we lost a long-time friend and unit member Phil Phillips this year. Phil was a lot of fun to work with and be around. We will miss him.

Well, how do you like winter now? Yeah I know, the skiers and snow mobile rid-ers are in hog heaven. For the rest of us, not so much. At the time of this writing the sky is overcast, the temperature is -8 degrees, ice has covered everything and there is more snow predicted for tonight and tomorrow morning. Birthday wishes for the month of Febru-ary 2014, go out to Kops Danny Taylor, Lloyd Hopkins and Lady Betty Trimm. Congratulations to all and may you have many more. There are not any anniversa-ries during the month of February. Now for the question of the month. Last month’s question was: In 1947 which major university asked Walt Disney if it could use one of his animated characters as their mascot. What is the university and the character? Answer: The Uni-versity of Oregon and the character ani-mated is Donald Duck. Thus, The Oregon Ducks. The month’s question is: In 1933, at the end of Prohibition Era, the temper-ance league found a new target. What was that target and who was one of it’s biggest opponents?

There is or there are skunks in the woodpile. During recent parades and steak feeds there has been a reemergence of one or more shady characters. It seems these petty thieving rascals are trying to besmirch the honesty and integrity of the Keystone Kops. On several occasions they have spread rumors, such as: “The Paddy Wagon” is not a real Model A Ford, but is made up of junkyard parts that are everything but Ford parts; that The Key-stone Kops are not really a unit within the Anah Shrine; and that all of the Kops are nothing but petty thieves themselves. The situation has gotten so troublesome that the Chief has ordered an investigation and has appointed Inspector Mason to conduct

that investigation. There are several questions facing In-spector Mason. Who is the person or persons bad mouthing the Kops; why are they doing it; and what do they expect to gain by it. This appears to be psychologi-cal in nature and Inspector Mason needs someone to help with the investigation. But who? He is not qualified nor is Chief of Detectives Clarke. He needs someone like a psychologist or a real life mental-ist. Who can he call on for help? More to follow. Time has come to close the “Blotter” for this month and to remember,

“IT’S ALL ABOUT THE KIDS”. HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY”

From the time I started walking my parents could tell that there something wrong with my legs. I still remember crying myself to sleep every night and waking up from a dead sleep screaming in agony. After many of doctor’s appointments and countless referrals to specialists I was finally referred to Shriners; however the diagnosis was the same: “It’s just growing pains.” Defeated my family and I gave up on finding a diagnosis and I realized at the age of eight that I would have to live with pain for the rest of my life.

A year later we received a phone call, the message was simple: “I have been thinking about your daughter, and I think she has rickets.” Dr. Law-rence Zemel, a doctor who I had only met once was still thinking about my case a year later.

After a simple blood test it was confirmed, I had x-linked hypophospha-temic rickets. I remember that day so clearly; I sat on the beach with my mother and cried with joy. My pain had a name.

Ever since that day, Shriners Hospital and its staff, especially Dr. David Drvaric, made it their mission to give me the quality of life I deserved. They spent countless hours creating a treatment plan: deciding which medica-tions I should take, making a leg brace and performing surgeries to correct the bowing of my left leg.

Shiners allowed me to go from standing on the sidelines, watching my childhood flash by my eyes, to participating in my childhood. For the first time in my life I was not in pain.

I can honestly say that Shriner’s Hospital for Children changed my life forever.

Reporter Over 150 people were on hand at Shri-ners Hospital for Children®-Lexington when a second gold plaque was placed on the philanthropic wall representing another $1million given by Daughters of the Nile Foundation. It was a truly spe-cial day, with Supreme Queen Margaret Ann Risk, the Foundation Board of Di-rectors, many Past Supreme Queens, Su-preme Elective and Appointive Officers, Supreme Appointees, several Reigning Queens, and lots of Ladies of the House-hold in attendance. Additionally, Past Im-perial Potentate Gene Bracewell, Impe-rial First Ceremonial Master Jeff Sowder, hospital administrator Tony Lewgood, and members of the Board of Governors were on hand to share in the festivities. In remarks given during the celebra-tion, Shriners emphasized the importance of the contributions made by the Daugh-ters of the Nile Foundation to the hospital system. Designs for the new hospital in Lex-ington were displayed, with the announce-ment that seven areas will be named for Daughters of the Nile. Areas to be named include: Surgery Waiting Lobby, Regis-tration Area, Motion Analysis Laboratory, Activities of Daily Living Kitchen, Oc-

cupational Therapy Treatment Room, Oc-cupational Therapy Room, Rehabilitation and Therapy Private Treatment Room. This historic plaque, placed during the 100th Anniversary of Daughters of the Nile, is the 39th in the Shriners Hospitals for Children® network, making Daugh-ters of the Nile the single largest contribu-tor to this wonderful pediatric healthcare system. Each plaque represents, not only $1 million given to the individual hospital,

but countless hours of fundraising efforts and the unwavering commitment of thou-sands of Daughters of the Nile members. From the winter 2013 issue of the Daugh-ters of the Nile newsletter – “Working To-gether for the Children”

About the only thing that will keep bills down these days is a paper weight.

I hope you all enjoyed the holiday sea-son and have your power back on by now. According to early reports from the North Pole, the number one gift being requested for Christmas 2014 is a standby generator. The Bangor-Brewer Shrine Club held a meeting on December 19th at the Shrine temple. It was our annual Divan visita-tion and the meeting was very well at-tended by over 75 Nobles and their La-dies and friends. Visiting dignitaries included: Harold “Sonny” Crocker (Past Potentate); Norris Nickerson (Past Po-tentate); Lee Kaufman (Illustrious Poten-tate); Dick Hallett (Chief Rabban); Jessie “Practically Perfect” Thomas (Assistant Chief Rabban); Bob Turner (High Priest & Profit); Steve Trimm (Oriental Guide); Larry Hersom (Recorder and Past Po-tentate); Roger Grindle (2nd Ceremonial Master); Andy Constantine (Director); Don Gordon (Marshall); and Doug Du-lac (Outer Guard). Lobster stew was on the menu and was enjoyed by all. Thanks so much to the kitchen crew for moving folks through the line so quickly. They included: Bob “Chowda” Mott, Joe Kitchen, Marg Smith, Sheila Alley, and Doris & Yogi Seymour. I’m pretty sure Denny Smith and George Alley were run-ning around somewhere as well – we’ll just have to assume they were helpful too! The crowd enjoyed lots of holiday and classic country tunes performed live by Jerry and Terri. As it was the Club’s annual meeting, all of the various annual reports were read and accepted. It was a particularly excit-ing meeting for Sped Seymour, as it was his last serving as Club President. He was presented with a plaque with a removable gavel by the incoming Club President, Danny Taylor. Sped probably wishes he’d had that gavel to swing around over the past two years! Congratulations, and thank you for your service to not just the BBSC, but also to Anah in general. Oth-ers positions filled for the upcoming year include: Phillip Joy (Vice President); Fred Brown (Secretary and Treasurer); and Denny Smith, George Alley, Todd Foster, Yogi Seymour, Spiffy Spofford, Sped Seymour (all Directors). The Club also voted to donate funds to the hospi-tals in Springfield and Boston and also to Anah Shrine Temple. Both Marty Taylor and Ray Rauscher be-came the Club’s newest lifetime members. Thanks guys. Several door prizes were raffled off with Don Goss and Betty Trimm taking

home some goodies. There was at least one more winner, but I did not catch their name, but I’m certain they know who they are. It sure was great having so many people come out for our Club. Please mark our next meetings to be held at the Shrine temple on your calendar – January 16th (homemade meatloaf) and February 20th (spaghetti & meatballs). We look forward to seeing you all soon!

Old Man Winter has really hit us hard this year. Hope everyone is staying warm. On the other hand, winter is almost over! A good way to stay warm all year through is to come and join the Flag Unit. From Our Captain-Hello Nobles and Ladies. I hope your new year has started off well. Here it is February and already we are getting

parade requests for the summer. We are put-ting together the agenda for our April meeting. During this meeting we will plan the summer events. As I write this in late December, I made our first turn in of calendars of 53. Hopeful-ly we will have more to report on by March. Also, I want to thank everyone that was able to make it to the January Ceremonial. Hello to all the snow birds in Florida, I hope things are going well and look forward to seeing you at our April meeting. I want to send out a big congratulations to Noble Andy and his Lady Sheila on their en-gagement. It only took Andy 15 years to see if Sheila was a keeper. I think he made a good choice. Until our next meeting take care. Hello to all the snow birds in Florida, I hope things are going well and look forward to see-ing you at our April meeting. Who is having a birthday this month? I hope everyone survived the ice storm of 2013 and has their power back. I per-sonally only lost my power for around 12 hours on Christmas Eve, but I realize now how much we all rely on electricity. Thank you to all of the line workers who put in all of those crazy hours to restore power for Maine. I know there are a lot of Shriners who are line workers and a Tip of the Fez to you for all of your hard work. As I write my article for this publication, it is crazy cold out and my thermometer is showing that it is -8 outside with more cold weather coming soon. Keep an eye on your fellow Shriners and Masons at this time and make sure that if anyone is in need of any assistance for fuel, plow-ing, etc. that they are taken care of. Keep your eyes and ears open to assist a Brother in need. New officers for the unit were voted on at our December meeting. Noble Bob Mott, in charge of our nominating com-mittee, nominated all of the same officers as 2013 with Noble Adam Beals as Direc-tor, Fred Patterson as Secretary and Jerry Hayes as Treasurer. All nominations were voted in by the unit. Congratulations to

all. Appointments for 2014 are as follows, Nobles Albert Higgins as 1st Assistant Di-rector, Tom Breitweg as 2nd Assistant Di-rector, and Harland Williamson as Quar-termaster. Congratulations to all of the new appointments. The January Ceremonial is over and the Second Section congratulates the entire appointed Divan for 2014 and all of the new Nobles of Anah Shrine. Congratula-tions to the new incoming Potentate and all of the other appointed Nobles through-out Anah Shrine. The Potentates party is scheduled for Saturday, March 8th at the Shrine Center. Please note the date as it is later than usual. A dinner of prime rib or baked stuffed chicken will be offered up this year and the cost will be the same as last year at $25.00 per ticket. Music for the evening will be provided by Second Section member Noble JR Mitchell. We will also have a silent auction table avail-able at the Potentates Party, so be on the lookout for items for auction that evening. More on January Ceremonial and Poten-tates Party will be reported in the March Anahgram. The Second Section is scheduled to cater the Wheeler’s Super Supper on February 8th at the Shrine temple. We will need all hands on deck to make this a success for our unit and for the Wheelers. Second Section has voted to donate $500.00 to Anah Shrine at the January

Ceremonial. Also we donated $500.00 toward the purchase of the new electronic marquis and $500.00 each to the Spring-field and Boston Shriner’s Hospitals. This is what we are all about, the children. It was very heartwarming to know that the hard work the unit did throughout 2013 in catering, parking and other events, al-lowed us to make these donations to the kids. This is why we are all here. Noble Dana Hewes expressed a desire to become an honorary member of the Second Section. He has been a very ac-tive member of the unit for the required 10 years as our bylaws state. This was brought up at our December meeting and voted on by the unit and a vote of affir-mative by the unit was cast. Thank you, Dana, for all that you have done for the Second Section and we hope you will still be around to help us out from time to time. The Second Section would like to send out thoughts and prayers to the Sherman family as their daughter Gabby has under-gone some serious medical procedures for the last month or so and will continue in the days to come. Please keep Gabby and her parents, Noble Glenn and Lady Eliza-beth in your prayers at this time. February birthday wishes go out to La-dies Susan Joy, Annette Marin, Tammy Redmond, Lynn Scripture and Elizabeth Sherman and Nobles Ronald Overlock,

Here we are suffering through some of the coldest weather we have been exposed to for quite a few years. I’ve lived through quite a few winters and I can’t recall a December when the temperature stayed down around zero for such an extended length of time. When I rolled out of bed this morning my thermometer read -18°, I call that cold. I am writing this article two weeks be-fore our January Ceremonial so I can only speculate as to what went on at the Ceremonial. I do know for a fact the PP Dick Hallett was once again asked to take charge of our temple and to serve as our Potentate for 2014. There is no doubt in my mind that Dick is definitely the right man for this task. Dick asked me to be an Aide in 2006. That was the first of my many appointments. It’s always a great mystery who is going to be appointed to the Outer Guard posi-tion on the Divan. I’ve had three names rolling around in my head for a year and I still don’t feel confident in naming my choice so I, along with you all, will just have to wait and see. I do know that Alfred Reynolds from Morrill, was ap-pointed to the Directors Staff. Welcome aboard, Al. I want to wish all of the new-ly-appointed Nobles success in their new commitments. I sincerely hope we have many candi-dates for the Ceremonial and that we all keep recruiting throughout the year. Until next month, attend your Blue Lodge and keep the faith.

Happy New Year to you all. wishing you and yours a great 2014 . The start

of 2014 has been eventful to say the least, as was December. The weather has been keeping me busy plowing at the airport. I plow and sleep, plow and sleep, I have had about a week’s worth of days off and I have neglected to get the articles ready for the Anahgram. Hopefully everyone is staying warm in all the frigid cold that has been coming our way. Must be my age but I’ve had enough of the cold. If you can, check on family and neighbors once in awhile to help them if need be with all the cold, snow, and ice. Our unit Christmas party was well attend-ed, our Divan Representative Noble Don Gordon and Lady Gail joined our merry group. The splendid decorations, from the Festival of Trees, were still up making the evening merrier and very Christmasie. Our dinner, as usual, was the best and we all say thank-you to the Clown unit for a job well done. Santa (Randy) and Mrs. Clause (Chrystal) were great again this year. Thank you both. Congratulations to our new officers and those of you that stayed where you were to continue doing what you do best. Just a FYI, don’t know how many of you saw Dean Pennypacker on the news before Christmas, just wanted to let you know he looks very well. He is at the Maine Veter-ans Home in Bangor if any of you would like to visit him. He would enjoy a visit

from some of our members. Moving on to the birthdays and anniver-saries (sorry about the late ones). Ladies Nancy Perkins, Cathy Fratini, Frances Pennypacker, and Nadene Smith. Nobles Harry Pratt Sr., Thomas Smith, and Randy Adams. Happy birthday to you all and best wishes for many yet to come. Happy anniversary and congratulations to Noble Doug and Lady Jean Segee, another year together. Past, Present, and Future mem-bers our next meeting is Tuesday, Febru-ary 4, at 7 o’clock at the Shrine Center. See you there. Until next time, Stay safe and warm.

The Annual Meeting of the Sunshine Club for Children was held at the Shrine temple on Monday, January 13, 2014. I will have a full report in the March Anahgram.

FEBRUARY 2014 11

Right after Christmas is when the department stores receive many unhappy returns of the day.

Happy 2014 one and all! A bright new year has begun in Anah, so let’s all start enjoying the many activities, Shrine Clubs, Unit functions, and all the fun Po-tentate Dick Hallett and his Lady Carolyn have planned for us. Once again, we will be going back up to “the county” for the June Ceremonial festivities. Start right now lining up your candidates for this summer event. Looking back on 2013, Anah has made great strides under the leadership of Po-tentate Lee Kaufman. We took in 79 new Nobles whom we hope will become active members of our temple. Ladies and No-bles alike enjoyed a very successful and fun-filled ceremonial weekend last June in Newport, along with two outstanding Field Days in Dexter and Ellsworth. Our membership has remained pretty consis-tent, and 2013 saw the lowest number of suspensions we have had in many years, thanks to our hardworking membership committee. Also, Anah hosted its Second Annual Festival of Trees, which was en-joyed by hundreds of area citizens, Nobles and Ladies. And of course, let’s not forget Anah’s biggest fundraiser of all, our an-nual Shrine Circus, under the leadership of Chairman Charlie Grindle, which is al-ways a big crowd pleaser. On the business side of things, the temple was able to procure a new insurance car-rier, as our coverage was being terminated with our previous carrier. . Trees were re-moved from the side of our building to en-able our sign to be more visible to the pub-lic, and a little manicuring to the lawn was done. The outside lights were repaired, to once again illuminate the entrance to the club room after being inoperable for many years and electrical work was done to bring us up to code. Potentate Lee has worked most of his year to raise funds for a new digital sign to replace the present one at the entrance to our driveway. We are happy to report that 95% of the fund-ing has been pledged, and Potentate Lee will chair the committee to see it through to fruition in 2014. All these in-house re-pairs and updating have had to be made during 2013, but they all contribute to a better functioning, more efficient, and at-tractive facility for all of us to enjoy. A complex this size is expensive to main-tain, but thanks to the ongoing pledges and contributions from our many Units and Shrine Clubs, plus individuals, we are able to survive. Regarding the sale of the 2014 calen-dars….your money MUST accompany

the coupons when turned into the office. I am receiving a number of coupons, but with no payment included. When you sell the calendar please have the purchaser make out the coupon and return the money and coupon to you at the time of the sale before mailing to the office. Another reminder that all correspondence should now be sent to 586 Main Street, Bangor, Maine 04401, as the temple no longer has a post office box. A big “thank-you” to Past Potentate Lee Kaufman and his Lady Peggy for their many years of dedication and commitment to Anah. Let’s all put our support behind our Potentate Dick Hallett and Lady Caro-lyn, and make 2014 the best year ever.

Tri-County Shrine Club held their An-nual Meeting on the 18th of December at Barb’s Village Square Restaurant in Corinna. We had 16 Nobles present for this meeting. After the Libation Hour, the meeting was called to order by President Doug Dulac. This being his last meeting as President, he thanked everyone who helped over the last two years. Invocation was given by Sec. David Mosley, Flag Sa-lute was led by the President. After a fine meal of roast beef the meet-ing was again called to order. Nobles in-troduced were Scott Folsom, Captain of the 4X4’s, Aide Emeritus Ron Green, Aide Ron Watson, Directors Staff Dan Costain, Marty Taylor, Public Relations and Doug

Dulac, Outer Guard. Special Guest intro-duced was Illustrious Sir, F. Lee Kaufman, and Potentate of Anah Shrine. Annual re-ports were read and accepted. Winner of the 50/50 was Noble Ron Watson. The nominating committee read their recom-mendations; the list was seconded and ap-proved. Voted to lead Tri County for the next two years are President Dan Costain and Vice President Arthur “COOTA” Wat-son. Voted to the Directors Staff was No-ble Darin Ingersoll. All other officers and Directors remained the same. Tri- County voted to make their usual donations to the Hospitals and the new sign for the Shrine Center. Potentate Lee Kaufman gave pleasing remarks. He stated that Festival of Trees was a huge success. The ATV raf-fle was also a success. The Potentate said that his year was almost over, quite a run he has had. He is looking to sitting back and doing some family events in the near future. But he did say it was worth the trip. No further business, meeting was closed by the President. Always work on Mem-bership for both the Shrine and your local Blue Lodge.

The photo above shows John and Micah Swallow was taken December 12 at the Acadamecians meeting at Angler’s Restaurant. John, at right was voted in as a new Director of the Acadamicins. Micah was elected as Vice President. They are showing a Christmas door prize from the meeting.

Hello Fellow Academicians, We offer our deepest condolences to the families and friends of Ralph Goss and Bud Cushing who recently passed away. Both of these men were very active and much-respected members of our unit, and they will be missed greatly. We have submitted our customary donations to the Springfield Hospital in their memories. We would also like to offer belated con-dolences to the family and friends of our member Galen Swan who passed away last summer. A donation in his memory will be made as well. 2014 dues are due. Please send a check for $10 made payable to Anah Academi-cians to Ron Bilancia, 59 Allison Park Brewer, ME 04412. Much appreciated. The more people who send dues in re-sponse to this means the less we need to spend on envelopes, paper, and postage which mean that much more we can do-nate to the hospitals. Also, please remem-ber that per the by-laws any member may examine the unit’s financial records at any time, and I’m happy to accommodate any such request. Congratulations to Barry Woodard who recently received his 45-year Blue Lodge pin.Happy belated anniversary wishes to Paul and Lou Connelly and to John and Elea-nor Noel. Congratulations folks on your many wonderful years together!

The next meeting will be Wednesday, March 26th at 6:30 at Kosta’s Restaurant on Wilson St. in Brewer. Come one come all. Ladies, guests, kids, prospective members, etc. are always invited.

As of this writing we have not had the Winter Ceremonial, so more on that next time. The meeting on December 11th at An-gler’s was great. Our Divan Rep and now Past Potentate Lee Kaufman was voted in as our newest Honorary Member. It was very good to see David Mosley, our new-est member, and his Lady Phyllis at their first unit meeting. Our governing officers for this year, as voted in at the meeting, are: Director - John Swallow; President – Donnie Copeland; Vice President – Mi-cah Swallow; Secretary/Treasurer – Yours Truly. The Section Masters are: Master of Technicians – Ron Cook; Master of Make-Up – Donnie Copeland; Master of Properties – Bud Young; Master of Ritual

– Yours Truly. We voted to donate $500 spread out to the Sunshine Club, Anah Shriners, and the hospitals. We also voted to do the Festival of Trees again next year, this time with a white tree and the theme of Outdoor Winter Fun for Kids. So we’ll be getting items for the tree such as sleds, snow forts block makers, winter outdoor gear for kids, etc. Heather Swallow has again offered to head up the effort, so thanks again Heather. Thanks to Steve and Julie Mosley for bringing several nice Christmas gift door prizes to add to our 50-50 raffle program. Also, thanks again to Steve for his 12 years of service as our Unit Director. We presented Steve a card and certificate of thanks for these many of years of service, and we look forward to continuing to have him as an active mem-ber of the unit. We also wish our new Director, John Swallow, the best of luck. We know he’ll do a great job, and Steve has graciously offered to work with him to get him up to speed. We will all be work-ing closely with John and supporting him as much as possible as he learns his new tasks. We also welcome John’s younger brother, Micah, to the board of governing officers. The Lobster Boat Unit Christmas party was held at Jasper’s Restaurant in Ells-worth. A good time was had by all. Those in attendance were Past Potentates John Fernald and Lady Betty, Geddes Simpson and Lady Carole. In attendance were 14 Shriners and their Ladies. Members pres-ent were Captain Carroll Chandler and Lady Susan, Waylon Merchant and Lady Melissa, Scott Johnson and Lady Laurie and their son, Scott Forbes and Lady Ni-cole, and Troy Huffman and Lady Lynn. Honorary members were Bill Geel and Lady Faye, Runtz Farnsworth and Lady Ora, Bill Sinford and Lady Holly, Gene Carter and Lady Diane, Doug Monson and Lady Cheryl, and Lifetime Member Ray Ellis and Lady Glenna. It was nice to see so many of the retired members out. Those who went home with door prizes were Faye Geel (lobster boat by Past Po-tentate John Fernald), Troy Huffman (ce-ramic Santa and sleigh salt and peppers),

Gene Carter (tollhouse pie made by Susan Chandler), Susan Chandler (centerpiece made by Ora Farnsworth), and Laurie Johnson (a wreath made by Ora). I haven’t heard from any of the members, but hope they all survived the Christmas and New Year’s holidays and the ice storm of 2013. At this time, all the boats are laid up for the winter. Noble Runtz, I hope you have Lady Ora out there checking on the boats in storage at your facility. If I ever get a free moment, I’m going to stop by and check the fleet. Remember, there is no meeting in Febru-ary. Next closest meeting could be March, but I’m not really sure. I presume it will be at the Ed Pellon Center in Machias. More to come in the upcoming month. Hope everyone remembers their Ladies on Valentine’s Day, because if it wasn’t for them we wouldn’t be much. Remem-ber, behind every Lobster Boat Noble, there stands an extraordinary Lady. Noble Wayne Butler, where were you during the ice storm of 2013? I can almost guess you were sunning yourself by the pool with an alligator looking at you. We’d like to welcome everyone into the year 2014. Hopefully, it will be a busy year for the fleet. Once again, you guys are in for a rough season, especially with a seafaring report-er like me. My eyes and ears are always open looking for something to write about. Remember, my name and number is in the other phone book. And that, believe it or not, is Hancock County. I don’t give it out very often, especially to my friends, but my number is 207-667-5125. Birthday wishes to Melissa Merchant and Nancy Robbins.

A dope is a guy who doesn’t know today what you just found out yesterday.

The February meeting will be held on the 4th and the March meeting is on the 4th as well. Both meetings will be at Pat’s Pizza with 6:00-6:30 social hour with meeting to follow. Let’s all find a fellow Shriner or a future Mason and get out and support our new club President. I hope everyone survived the ice storm of 2013. Hope all had a Merry Christmas and we wish everyone a Happy New Year. Remember, Valentine’s Day is coming up on February 14th. If you didn’t get your significant other a box of candy, you should buy one yourself, because one or the other is on a diet. Remember you can also purchase a ticket for the upcoming gun raffle to be held by the club. Some are still available from club members. I think I’d better jingle my wife’s memory on that, because I don’t really need the candy. Maybe I should buy her a ticket too. Now for the local news. Heard that No-ble Cecil Fernald bought a new furnace for his camp, and is also building an out-side shower. I hope he realizes the water is not that warm this time of year. Tommy Fernald has had trouble keeping his truck on the road. P.S. I thought it was 4-wheel drive. Also heard there has been some se-rious ice fishing on Somes Pond. Steve and Wanda Fernald’s daughter, Emily, has been home for the holidays. Also, my daughter, Joy, flew in for the holidays and flew out in the nick of time before the 2013 ice storm. John Fernald has been checking on Noble Bud Bordeaux, and I guess he is having a good winter so far. Noble Wayne, just so you know, your cas-tle on Molasses Pond is a glitter of ice. By the way, did you participate in the “alliga-tor dip” on New Year’s Day? You know, I participated in the polar dip up here in Maine. I got my big toe wet. By the way, where is my Christmas card? Now for an update on the end of deer season..your elusive reporter was driving out of a side road the last day of musket season, when all of a sudden an 8-point buck landed in front of my plow. I said to myself, “Oh no.” I jumped out and there he lay. I walked up to him; he was still breathing. I guess I just knocked the wind out of him. I took my hunting jacket off, warmed him up a little bit, and scratched his chin. I said, “You’re not going to die this easy.” I ran back to the truck, got some orange flagging tape, came back and tied a piece on his antlers, and all of a sud-den, the big fella jumped up, and we looked each other in the eyes. I said, “You lived to see another year”, and away he

bolted. Of course, you know, I didn’t have my camera to record all this, and Noble Forrest was in Eastbrook at home. Two days later, I received a phone call from the landowner, and he was telling me about the big buck running around in the back field with orange tape on his antlers. He asked, “Does that sound strange to you?” I said, “It must happen only once in a life-time.” Remember to get your gun tickets in to Noble Jesse Thomas by the end of Febru-ary. Noble Wilbert Terry and Lady Joan head-ed to Florida after Christmas. Hope it is warmer there than it is here. Happy birthday wishes go to David Neal, Sandra Neal, Jesse Thomas, Dean Hoke, Tony McKim, Ed Coolidge, Holly Sav-age, Pat Coolidge, Rose Lee Carlisle, Bar-ry Hamilton, Elizabeth Trimm, and Nancy Robbins. Honeymooners are Jeff and Alice Dow, Noyes and Grace Albee, and Dan and El-len Duff. Whoops!! Gotta go! Cookie and I are headed to Bangor to check out my wife’s 2013 Christmas gift. Boy, is she in for a big surprise! Then we are going to try it out on the pond. Hope she still loves me!

Just think, 28 more days and it should start to warm up. Running water, black flies, and mosquitos, I can’t wait. March 1st we will have our annual meet-ing at the Happy China Buffett, at 6:00. Hope to see all members and their ladies. Also we will be having our golf tourna-ment at the Piscataquis Golf course in Guilford. Date to be announced at a later date. Birthday wishes go out to Gloria Blake, Scott Folsom, and the young Jane Russell. Anniversary this month are Don and Dar-lene Emmons. What a lucky guy to have such a nice young lady to take care of him in his ageing years. Have heard that Dan and Suellen Leigh-ton will be flying to Washington D.C. to be with their grand-daughter on February 6th. Have a good trip and say HAPPY BIRTHDAY for us. The days are getting longer and starting to warm up. Check out your local Blue Lodge, as the temperature there may be rising also! Until next time, SEE YA!

The New Year has already arrived and I want to wish everyone a healthy and pros-perous 2014. I am sure that you all had a wonderful holiday season with family and friends. If you lived in Down East Maine you certainly had some challenging times over the holidays and early January, in-cluding hours or days without power. We received it all . . . sleet, freezing rain, snow, and now extremely cold weather has set in. Thanks to our very own Robert Look and his crew for getting the power restored as soon as possible, along with the help of other companies who sent their crews here to help Bangor Hydro and Central Maine Power crews out. Trees are still covered with a very thick coating of ice and snow, with lots of branches still hanging to the ground in many places. And with the ex-tremely cold weather, it may stay that way for awhile. Hopefully we will not lose our power for any prolonged periods of time! For those on Facebook, you probably have seen pictures that have been posted. The storm was comparable with the ice storm of 1998 in this area, with the exception of downed power poles. Our January meeting was held on Janu-ary 2nd at Pat’s Pizza in Machias. Attend-ees included Past Potentates Ed Sprague and Ed Pellon; Ambassador BJ Cherry; Assistant Chief Director David Weaver; Assistant Greeter Michael Bailey; Pho-tographer Richard Kilton; Troy Huffman, Lobster Boat Unit; John McClure, Presi-dent of Washington County Shrine Club and Frank Theriault, Shrine Circus Com-mittee. Ed Pellon offered a new raffle item, a bottle statute of a Shriner, filled with liquor, as a fundraiser which will be kicked off at the Ceremonial in January. The winner will be drawn at the Lob-ster Feed in August. If you missed your chance to purchase a ticket at the Ceremo-nial, contact any of the officers of WCSC to do so. The January Ceremonial was held on January 17th and 18th. We welcome new Potentate Richard Hallet and wish him and Lady Carolyn a wonderful year at the helm of Anah. It is sad that Tom Clukey and Lady Gail did not make it to their year but I am sure that Gail’s presence will be with us the entire year and for years to come, and that Tom will be looking down with a smile saying “job well done”! The February meeting will be a ladies night and held at Helen’s Restaurant in Machias on February 6th, a day after the

deadline for the March Anahgram. I can report that Mike will be there with bells on to present the Ladies with a rose and give them all a kiss. There will be a pound raffle and attendees are requested to bring an item weighing a pound to be auctioned off. We have several months during the year where the deadline for articles for the Anahgram are before our club meeting is held so anything that needs to be reported will come a little late. Members should mark a change on their monthly meeting calendar for the March 6th meeting, which will be a Ladies Night and held at the Lee Pellon Center. There will be a free spaghetti dinner served. We are hoping to have a good turnout for this event. Circus advs are being sold by the WCSC this year as the Mini-Car Unit no longer wanted to do this. Support your Shrine Club and the kids by becoming a spon-sor for the Shrine Circus or by purchasing tickets. Club members will be canvassing businesses throughout the county. Birthday greetings for February go out to Past Potentates Al Gibson and Guy Chap-man, Luxor Past Potentate Alward Mehan, Howard Bagley, Renee McGuire, Bert Maxim, Sheila Mitchell, Stanley Mitch-ell, Jesse Thomas, Tom Fernald, Pauline Wood, Keith Lentovich and Dawn Gooch. Those celebrating anniversaries are How-ard and Beverly Bagley, Brent and Renee McGuire, Todd and Sandy Alley, and War-ren and Velma Orcutt. Best wishes to all. Robert and Mike are now enjoying the abundance of snow in this area and saying “CAT and where it’s at”! As a reminder to all snowmobilers, remember to dress ap-propriately, keep your sleds under control and yourselves safe, respect landowner rights, and stay on the marked trails. You abuse and we all lose! Accidents have al-ready happened. Don’t end up with your name as a statistic! To all you snowbirds that are already in warmer climates, enjoy your winter and hopefully warmer weather. Spring is just around the corner and you will soon be re-turning to Maine.

Greetings Nobles and Ladies. 2014 is here, and that means you are ALL a year older. A nice old fellow told me one time, “Lad, if you don’t want to grow old die young.” I didn’t like the sound of either, so upon my 29th birthday I announced that I was not going to have another birthday, I don’t see any sense in counting. Your Highlanders held our annual meet-ing on December 8th. We were very pleased to have the Potentate, our Divan rep, and their Ladies as guests. We were also blessed to have several emeritus and honorary highlanders in attendance. New officers for 2014 will be, Mike Murphy – president/recorder, Richard Bowden – vice president/secretary, Cliff Wells – treasurer, Paul Hazard – pipe major, Tom Sawyer – drum major, Mike Grant – pipe sergeant, Ernie Smith – drum corporal/director at large, Kraig King – drum sergeant/quarter master, Tony Smith

Boston Fire Fighters Burn Foundation celebrates “Christmas in July” with Shriners Hospitals for children patientsSanta came early this year at ShrinersBoston Burns Hospital

Shriners Hospitals for Children-Boston, thanks to the Boston Firefighters Burn Foundation (BFFBF), a non-profit, charitable organization made up volun-teers—all of whom are Boston firefighters. Santa’s summertime appearance this year took place on Wednesday, July 25th to bring cheer and special gifts to the young patients at the hospital. This marks Santa’s ninth July visit to Shriners-Boston. He will also make a return visit in December. The “Christmas in July” event at Shriners-Boston is just one of many activities made possible through funding by the BFBF, which works to “ease the suffering and hardships of burn victims and their families.” Funding for Santa’s gifts and other BFBF efforts is obtained, for the most part, through a program known as “High Five,” which deducts five dollars from the weekly paychecks of Boston Firefighters Union members. The “Christmas in July” event and other BFBF efforts are a way for firefighters to keep in touch with the young burn survivors they’ve met while responding to emergency calls and provide an opportunity for them to witness the strides in recovery the children have made since their injury occurred. “These children and their families have been through so much,” says Steve Tur-ley, a member of the board of directors for the Boston Firefighters Burn Founda-tion. “We just want to support them in whatever way we can. If anyone deserves to have two Christmases a year, it’s them.”

DIRECTORS STAFF

– drum corporal. We are starting to form our calendar for this summer; it will be a goal of mine to have at least one weekend a month free for family time and mowing the lawn. It is hard to think about mow-ing the lawn, when it was -11 at 1 pm Jan 2nd in Millinocket, but I know that if we don’t consider member needs now, we won’t have any members to consider later. I hope that everyone had a nice Christ-mas and New Year. This is the time of year when the Blue Lodge and Shrine can really shine. Every one of us knows a widow, or struggling young family. A few gallons of oil, a food basket, a fruit basket, can really lift the spirits of those in need. I know, we always talk about charity and giving, but the greatest form of charity is what our organizations stand for. Ma-sonry is largely about SELF IMPROVE-MENT. The greatest form of charity that we can give is to help others to help them-selves. Sharing a skill, teaching the value of self reliance, and encouraging financial education can make a world of difference to younger struggling families. People in the community see these virtues and they know where they come from. The power of Masonry is not in how many dollars we give, but how much we enrich those around us. Remember, charity begins at home. If anyone would like piping or drumming lessons, please contact me at [email protected]. Until next time, God Bless you and I hope you all have a blessed 2014!!

It’s getting closer to Circus time and there are some changes this year that we need to pass along. These changes only affect the Circus in Bangor. Presque Isle will run the same as they always have. There will be a small increase in ticket prices which you will see when you receive your Noble tickets. Presale tickets will be $10 each and $12 at the door. It will still be general admission tickets with no reserve seats this year. That may change next year after

NOBLE DENNIS HILL BANGOR CIRCUS

Continued from page 15 we get the first year under our belts using the Cross Insurance Center. Everybody entering the Cross Center will have to check in at a sign in table inside the door. You will be given a badge to wear while you are there. When you leave the build-ing you have to sign out. The Cross Center is very strict about who is in the building. If a Noble brings in a person or child to watch the Circus they will need a ticket. We will need as many volunteers as ever, maybe even more. This will be a learning year for us and we are sure it won’t be per-fect but with everyone’s help we will get through it and it will be a great success as it has always been. We will be reaching out to people in the next few months so be ready when we knock on your door. We will let you know of more changes as they come along. Think Circus

Greetings Nobles and Ladies, I hope everyone is in good health and made it through the ice storm and subzero temperatures without issues. We had our annual meeting at Seasons in December and will have had our January meeting by the time you’re reading this. At the annual meeting the drinks were flowing, the buffet was delicious, and the company was great. Thanks go out to Buzz Lightyear for his second annual gift drawing. for that one. We finished our meeting with some wise words from Roger Grindle, Jesse Thomas, Tom Frost, and Potentate F. Lee Kaufman. And we once again were honored to have them and some emeritus members attend. The Funsters would like to send out birthday wishes this month to Diane Clark, Bob Hasey, Dave (Big Bird) Hasey, Shawn Cookson, Jesse (Pink Panther) Thomas, Jackie Harris, Sterling Bunker, Olivia Spencer, Sam Lindsey, Mandie Al-len, and Destiny Lancaster. In closing, our next monthly meeting will be Monday, February 10th at the Shrine templein Bangor with a 6:00 social and 7:00 meeting.

Well winter is here again Go-Karts are tucked away until warm weather and dry blacktop comes back it was a great sum-mer and as usual Captain Dave got us all lost going to the Northeast using my trust-ed GPS so on the way back with a truck load of trophies and yours truly feeling a little under the weather which I think was the water that did it but anyway we decid-ed to follow Jim with his GPS that was a bad idea as well because Jim must use his to moose hunt a lot as we rode a few dirt roads in Canada looking for the United States which is a big target for even a bad GPS other than that it was a great time, we did get a little wet in the parade. Captain Dave would like to thank every-one for their participation this year, with-out everyone working together we could not do what we do to help the kids and have fun doing it.

Help Anah grow, Line up candidates for the January 2014 class.

Greetings from the County. ASC held their annual Christmas party on the 7th with a great meal of prime rib or chicken cordon blue. Music was provided by the band Centerline and yes some tried to dance. There may even be pic-tures out there. A children’s Christmas party was scheduled for Dec. 15 but Mother Nature had different plans as we received a foot of snow. The party was rescheduled for Dec. 29 which was a much better day. There were games, a bounce house, Klowns a ton of food, and the main attrac-tion, the man himself, good old Santa. We would like to thank Potentate Lee for the great job he has done leading Anah in 2013. Please, everyone, have a safe Cer-emonial and support your blue lodge.

Noble Bruce Blodgett, Reporter

Anah Band has been having a good time playing Broadway music as we had pre-pared for the Ceremonial; it is always a great time watching our listeners tap their toes to those familiar tunes. Although we are still in the grip of winter, we will now be preparing for parade season! It’s nev-er too soon to start practicing, A Small World, a fan favorite song. We had our annual meeting at the Cer-emonial and decided to keep the same officers as the preceding year. Calendars were distributed to all members and also the several friends that played with us this year. We are still looking to add some new musicians to our group; we desire to play

Noble Doug Brockway, Reporter

some more diverse music and more mem-bers would make that job a little easier! Brass, wind, piano, guitar, bass, or piano. Lessons and instruments provided to any and all who will be willing to learn some-thing new. Two Mondays a month for a practice commitment plus some parades to boot. Practices are currently being held in Bangor at the Shrine and sometimes they are held in Newport. Remember to find that experienced player or an adventuresome Mason to be a Noble and take part with us, they are out there. Non-Shriners are allowed to per-form with us for any unofficial events so if you know someone who would like to play that is not a Noble, have them call us.

A welcome to 2014 and the upcoming parade season for the Indy Unit. And an introduction of the Unit’s 2014 members; President - Ray Withee, Vice President - Dustin Gilberti, Treasurer - Mike Lon-don, Secretary - Galen White, Reporter - Jerry McAvaddy, and Advisor - Mike

Members - Jody Anderson, Butch Asselin, Ted Bowers, Tony Bowers P.P., Blair Bubar, William J Busse, Jr., Alan Cleaves, Jr., Dale Clifford, Craig Clossey, Eric Crouse, Tony DeLucca, Jerry Drake, Jeremy Farley, Dick Hallett P.P., Robert F. Palmer, Mike Parmigiani, David Perry, Hollis Porter, Bryan Shaw, Kevin Sher-man, Keith Bart Smith, Ken Stewart, Paul Stoddard, George Watson & Galen White. How do we fit them all into 15 cars? Tightly. By the time this is in print the 2014 Janu-ary Ceremonial will be in the past and our own Dick Hallett will be Potentate of Anah Shriners for a second time. We look forward to serving him for 2014. The Unit regrets the untimely passing of Tom Clukey; a past president and one or the original founding member of the Unit. He will be sorely missed.I want to thank the Unit for accepting me back after leaving at the end of the 2011 parade season. They must have needed a reporter awfully bad.

Women may be taken for granted, but they never go without saying.

Except for the snow, ice, and cold, as I write this in the first week of January, it’s been a quiet winter so far. Has everyone who remained behind to mind the state had enough? Have any of you Yankees who ventured down south even tried to send any heat this way? Remember, it’s those from here who go there and stay there who are usu-ally referred to as “damn Yankees”. So if you don’t want to be branded with that la-bel when you return, you need to show us some sympathy. Happy Birthday greetings this month go to Ladies Doris Seymour, Jean Fernald and Ann Jordan. ( Aren’t you glad I re-minded everyone)? Happy birthdays also to Yogi Seymour, Bill Fernald and Tom Fernald. (Do the math on that group of candles)! This month also brings warn anniversary greetings to Ann and Ron Jordan. Spring is coming and remember that with that comes the ever popular Convertible Unit Super Supper. It always seems to be a sold out affair, so call early to reserve your tickets. More super supper specifics will follow as the date draws near. Enjoy the longer days and we hope that Punxsutawney Phil didn’t see his shadow on the 2nd. I don’t know about “Ground-hog day- 1/2 your hay?), but I do know that the old wood pile is looking rather thin. Remember your sweetie on the 14th! Have any brave members had their tops down this past month? Ross, you and the rest down there don’t count. I’m referring to those of us up here.

Noble David G. Beckett, Reporter

Greetings from Schoodic Shrine Club: The annual meeting and Christmas party was held on December 18th at Karen’s Restaurant in Calais. A delicious pot roast was enjoyed by the 20 Nobles and guests in attendance. Delicious desserts were served following the meal. The chocolate pie was especially good. The annual meeting was then held, and Noble Ike Winchester was elected presi-dent. Noble Jamey Gower was elected vice president. No changes were made

for the other offices. Donations were then made to the hospitals and the travel fund. Nobles Frank Theriault and Dennis Bry-ant passed out the Circus awards. Noble Buster Hayward will receive a watch at the next meeting. Nobles Dennis Bryant and David Beckett each received a Circus shirt and a Circus hat. The famous Yankee Swap was then held. This is always a lot of fun. Dennis ended up with the box of chocolates and two $5.00 scratch-off tickets which had made the rounds. No one knows how much

Dennis won, but he and Libby flew out to Texas and California the next day. Our 2014 schedule will be decided at the January meeting. We do not have a Febru-ary meeting scheduled. Our March meet-ing is usually held at the new Friendly Restaurant in Perry. I have no reason to believe that it will be held anywhere else. I, therefore, hope to see you at the New Friendly on March 19th at 5:30 pm. Have a great new year and I hope to see you at our meetings during the year. ‘Til next time!

Recently, Shriners Hospitals for Chil-dren – Boston welcomed Katelyn Marengo, our new bilingual school teacher. Katelyn is a graduate of Northeastern University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Modern Languages and a Master of Arts in Teaching with a focus on Urban Secondary Education. She studied abroad in Seville, Spain and is fluent in Spanish. Katelyn has taught and tutored in both Massachu-setts and New Hampshire. Her experi-ence includes teaching in a mixed lan-guage classroom, specifically as a specialist with native Spanish-speak-ing students. Katelyn has a passion for teaching and is fascinated by the way people learn. She describes working with students and under-standing their individual needs as “putting the pieces of a puzzle togeth-er.” Gesturing to the array of books and other educational resources in the classroom, she stated, “Look at this place! Who wouldn’t want to be here? I am very happy with the abundance of resources here.” At age 15, Katelyn served as a student ambassador ac-companying then NH governor Jeanne Shaheen on a trade mission trip to Mexico. She plays the piano and the French horn and has performed with the Boston Youth Symphony Orches-tra, Boston University’s Tanglewood Institute and as part of the MIT orches-tra. Katelyn will be primarily teaching our Spanish-speaking children. She is very happy to become part of the Shri-ners team and is dedicated to making sure that all of the children here re-ceive the education they deserve.

A Patients Perspective“Be thankful that you’re alive, and with help from Shriners, you’ll be able to go forward to pursue your dreams.” – Ce-leste Kratz. Celeste Kratz, age 20, is a motivated young woman who is fo-cused on achieving her goals in life. Her positive, “can-do” attitude is read-ily apparent as she discusses the part-time jobs she has held working at a dog kennel and more recently in wom-en’s clothing at a department store. Now attending college, she plans to become a nurse. Celeste is also a burn survivor. She was first treated at Shriners as a six-week-old infant who had been burned in a house fire. “My aunt was babysit-ting me and my brother while caring for her own two children. I was in the living room in a carrier and her five-month-old son was in the kitchen while she was cooking. When she left the room to check on the two children playing in the yard, a grease fire start-

ed in the kitchen.” When her aunt saw the fire, she raced to the back door leading to the kitchen and pulled her son from the burning room. She was unable to get to Celeste. “She ran outside yelling for help and two neighbors called 911. The firefighters had to smash the front window to get to me.” Since Celeste was wearing flame re-sistant clothing that covered much of her body, she was primarily burned on her face, her arms and hands. A life-flight helicopter brought Celeste to a local hospital in Philadelphia, where she was stabilized. A week lat-er, she and her father and grandpar-ents flew to Boston for treatment at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Boston. “Shriners paid for all accom-modations for my dad, who was only 20 at the time, and his parents.”Since Celeste’s first stay at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Boston as an infant, she has been admitted 34 times

December 7 was a busy start to the Christmas season with Fou, DIv-It, and Spiffy entertaining the many kids, both regulars and first timers, at the monthly Home Depot Children’s Workshop. The late afternoon found Dim Wit, Squiggles, Sluggah, Ko-ko, Pop Fizz, Babycakes, Gizmo and Scooter braving the cold to participate in Bangor’s very well attended Festival of Lights Parade. On December 14 Div-It, Papi, and Spiffy appeared at the Bangor-Brewer Shrine Club’s Children’s Party at Anah Shrine Center. By evening Spiffy changed cos-tume to play Santa Claus Saturday the Clown unit’s very successful Christmas Party that evening. The business meeting preceding the Christmas Party was fast and efficient since there were no contested offices. Sluggah is no longer secretary as he is now assistant treasurer. Thanks for a job well done. Diva-It, who has quite a few years as a lodge secretary is taking over this critical job. Our thanks to Diva-It along with a vote of confidence. Although no other events in character were reported, the unit was busy catering several Christmas season events for other units. On behalf of the Anah Shrine Clown Unit, I wish all a healthy, happy and truly successful 2014.

After retrieving my pen from a place I know would thaw the ink from its frozen state. I now can proceed. The year starts fresh with newly elected Captain Garry Curtis at the head of our Wheeler convoy.

Our Christmas party was once again a success and we’re heading for our annual Cabin Fever Super Supper on the 8th of February. Ticket sales are very brisk. If you want one, hop to it like a snow bunny! Which reminds me of snowbirds, of all the frozen years I won’t be one this year. My complements to Lady Rhonda for keeping me well fed for four days over Christmas with no power. I’m sure most of you have your own stories to tell. We Wheelers have no anniversaries to share this February but we wish Nobles Dean Hoke, Barry and Garry Curtis and Lewis Church very happy birthdays. We Wheelers offer our brother, David Appleby, and his family our deepest sym-pathy at the untimely passing of his wife, Christy Appleby. She was a big supporter of the Anah Wheelers and she traveled with David to many of our parades. She will be missed.

As I write this, the Holidays are a recent thing of the past and we are all looking forward to the New Year. Unfortunately, those in Maine are experiencing some bad Northeast weather. That weather pre-vented a lot of members from attending the Kamper Christmas Party on December 22nd. However, those attending enjoyed a great dinner put on by the Anah Clowns. We also had our business meeting and had elections of officers. Officers elected for the year 2014 were: Wagon Master, Dar-rell King; Trail Boss, Derward Shedd;

Treasurer, Don Wiswell; Secretary, Lyman Blyther; and Scout, Ron Green. Lyman Blyther will also continue as the Reporter. I know you will all support our new Wag-on Master by attending the Kamper func-tions and lending a hand when needed. Don Johnson is going to host the hot dog lunch at his place in Lake Wales for those Kampers who were wise enough to go to Florida for the winter months. It will be on Wednesday, February 12th at 11:00 AM. Please bring your own chairs and a dish to share (appetizer, side or dessert). Our Wagon Master Darrell King and his Scout Ron Green have already made pro-visions for our spring outing. It will be held at the Pumpkin Patch Campground in Hermon on May 9-11. A block of 20 sites has been set aside for the Kampers. Please make your reservations by calling Marilyn Carter at 352-212-9664 and be sure to mention you are with the Anah Kampers. We will have information on camping at the Ceremonial in Presque Isle on June 19-21 at a later date. Other dates for 2014 include the Blueberry Festival in Machias August 14-17, our Fall Business meeting at Balsam Woods in Abbot September 19-20, and our Christmas Party December 7. We will have further details on these as we get more information.February Birthdays are: Carole Green, Betty Shedd, Jesse Thomas and Duffy Woods. February Anniversaries are: Jim & Gloria Bennett, Gregg & Bernice Currier, Charles & Selma Larson, Dale Nelson & Carol Miller, and Dana & Winsome Smith. As always, please contact me with any er-rors or omissions or with any news ( 321-693-5717, [email protected]).
