After Data Breach, E-Bay Encourages Uses to Change Password
California-based eBay first urged its 145 million users to change their passwords three weeks ago -after determining that hackers had accessed a database containing customers' passwords and otherpersonal information, including names, email addresses, physical addresses, phone numbers anddates of birth. The breach occurred in late February or early March, eBay said. The online marketplace said "extensive tests on its networks" had turned up no evidence ofunauthorized activity stemming from the breach. It also said the cyberattack posed no threat tocustomers' financial data - including credit-card numbers - because that information is storedseparately in encrypted formats. PayPal, eBay's money-transfer service, reportedly wasn't compromised."However," the company said in a news release, "changing passwords is a best practice and will helpenhance security for eBay users."

Vice president at Equifax encouraged cardholders to check their recent transactions, place fraudalerts on their accounts and check their credit reports. It's unclear when the data was breached, but AmEx first discovered it back on March 25, according tothe company.
