A New Early Warning of Identity Theft Is Proposed

 The firms that control consumers' credit reports need to do more to notify people if they may be thevictims of identity theft. Equifax , Experian and TransUnion, the country's three largest credit­reporting firms, are being askedto implement a system that will notify consumers when someone is trying to get a loan or other typeof credit in their name. If the consumers didn't request the credit, they would have an early indicationthat their information had been compromised.  This request suggests that consumers who are sent alerts should also be allowed to immediatelyfreeze their credit reports, which would prevent the loans from being given out.With a freeze, lenders can't obtain your credit reports, so a new account can't be opened in yourname. (You will have to undo a freeze before applying for credit.) While consumers can currentlyfreeze their credit reports, this proposal would allow them to do this immediately as part of the alert.  Most identity­theft victims don't find out their information has been compromised until after fraudulentloans are taken out in their name and their credit scores decline because of the additional debt thatgenerally goes unpaid.  Click the link to read full article

Distracted Shoppers Become Victims of Identity Theft

Police are looking for two thieves who were caught on camera distracting shoppers and taking offwith their wallets.

One woman was victimized while mulling over seafood items at a Publix in Aventura. In the video awoman is seen coming up to the victim and distracting her, while her partner grabs her wallet andtakes off.

Investigators say they know of five victims, but believe there are probably more out there. If you thinkthis has happened to you, you're urged to call your local police department.
