Parlor Guitar
Theres something brilliantly haunting about playing Brazilian jazz on
a 160-ye ar old French guitar. Originally these smaller body instruments
were designed and produced during the mid-nineteenth century, bright in
tone and often surprisingly loud. I found this 1840 Nicolas Henry guitar,
which was made in Mirecourt, France, in a shop in Paris. After all these
years, it still plays beautifully and has amazing intonation.

James Taylors Back
Scratches
James Olson has been making his own brilliant acoustic attop
guitars in Minnesota since the late 1970s. This is number ve of ten
in a limited e dition signed jointly by James Taylor and Olson himself. Jim
Olson told me that James Taylor actually played two or three concerts
with this exact guitar and he was concerned because it had belt-buckle
scratches on the back. As a lifelong JT fan, I said rather innocently,
Oh, just leave the scratches on the back, Jim. OK? Please?

Remember the Alamo
F
or musicians, there is nothing quite like your rst band. Mine was
The Westminsters in the sixth grade. I had already outgrown a SearsSilvertone when my Dad took me to McCords music store in Dallas,
where we bought this 1964 Alamo Fiesta. The rst tune I played on it
was a coffeehouse standard turned bubbling rocker by The Animals
called House of t he Rising Sun. The basic single pickup didnt give
a lot of variety, but it was perfect for cranking out radio hits by The
Kinks, Yardbirds, and of course, the Beatles.
