One hot summer day that was much like every other day, a baby was born who was not much like any other baby. This baby stood up and shouted to the world, “I’m Sally Ann Thunder Ann Whirlwind!” She grinned from ear to ear. “I can outjump, outdance, and outlasso anybody.”

Sally Ann’s family was amazed. They couldn’t help smiling back at the little baby who was a big boaster. They already loved little Sally Ann for all her spunk, but her brothers and sisters didn’t believe she could jump higher or dance better or lasso faster than they could. So they challenged her to a jumping contest. They picked the biggest tree in the forest.

“Aww, that’s easy,” Sally Ann said. “One, two, three, JUMP!”

Ma and Pa, brothers and sisters, and baby Sally Ann all jumped. They tried their best, but only Sally Ann reached the top. They had to admit—she was a pretty talented baby.

Sally Ann grew and so did her love of adventure. So after a few years, she was ready to try things on her own. She grabbed her favorite blanket and said her goodbyes. “I’m heading for the wild,” she said. “Wish me some luck.”

Knowing the strong gal Sally was, her family said, “We’re wishing the wild some luck.”

And off she went.

After a long day of hiking, Sally Ann curled up with her blanket for a quick snooze. Suddenly she heard a low growl. Opening her eyes, Sally was face to face with a very large and very angry panther.

“I am so sorry,” Sally Ann said. “Have I taken your bed?”

The panther just glared and growled.

“Perhaps we could be friends,” she said. “And friends enjoy a good dance.

Would you like to dance with me?”

Now everyone knows that a panther cannot refuse a dance. So that panther stood on his hind legs and danced with Sally Ann. They danced until their feet—and paws—were sore. And they laughed until their sides ached. And when it was all done, they were the best of friends.

Years passed, and Sally Ann grew taller and stronger and braver than ever. One afternoon she heard a loud screeching and went to investigate. What she found made her laugh so loud the trees shook. A man was lying on the ground with his head stuck in the fork of a tree.

“Ouch!” he yelled as he tried to get up.

“How’d you get into this fine mess?” Sally asked.

“I laid down here for a nap and when I woke my head was stuck,” the man replied. “Now if you’d be so kind to help a fellow out, I’ll give you a nice iron comb,” he said.

“Sure as sugar!” Sally Ann said. “But you don’t have to give me a comb. I’ll help because I like to.”

She reached into a snake’s den and pulled out a handful of rattlesnakes. Quick as can be, she tied the snakes together to make a mighty strong rope. Then she lassoed that tree and pulled and tugged with all her strength.

The branch bent and the man pulled his head free.

He jumped up to meet his rescuer. The man took one look at Sally Ann and was love-struck.

“I’m Davy Crockett,” he said, “and I’d be happier than a huggin’ bear if you’d let me call you Mrs. Crockett.”

Sally Ann flashed her ear-to-ear grin and said, “I’m Sally Ann Thunder Ann Whirlwind, and I’d be happier than a dancin’ panther to be your wife.”

So the two got hitched. They built a nice log cabin where they could raise lots of little Crocketts to join in their wild and grand adventures.
