Dear Parishioners:
As I informed you back in the Winter when I announced the
merger of Most Precious Blood and Sts. Simon & Jude parishes
into one parish that there would be a change in the Mass sched-
ule as well as a reduction in the number of Masses. The changes
also require the staggering of Mass hours so that the three priests
of the parish can be available to both churches. The following
new schedule takes effect the first weekend of July 2019:
MOST PRECIOUS BLOOD:
Saturday 4:00pm in English
Sunday 9:00am in English
Sunday 10:30am in Spanish
Sunday 12:00pm in English
Sunday 1:30pm in Chinese
(The Spanish Mass on Saturday evening is eliminated.)
STS. SIMON & JUDE:
Saturday 5:15pm in English
Sunday 8:30am in English and Italian*
Sunday 11:00am in English
Sunday 12:30pm in Spanish *Several parishioners have raised the question as to whether or
not the first Mass on Sunday should be bilingual or all English.
It will stay bilingual into September and at that point the com-
munity at that Mass will vote to keep it bilingual English and
Italian or go to all English. That will be the congregation’s deci-
sion, not mine.
With a combined weekend Mass population of 1500 people and
four languages I am well aware that it is impossible to satisfy
everyone. I ask your cooperation and ask you to look at the lar-
ger needs of the parish and not personal convenience. The Mass
book will open at both churches in late June with the sched-
ule ready to accept intentions at that time.
Please note that Saturday Confession time stays the same at Sts.
Simon & Jude but will be heard at Most Precious Blood during
the Saturday morning Holy Hour between 8:30am and 9:30am.
Parishioners of both churches are always able to celebrate the
sacrament of Confession at other times by making an appoint-
ment with one of the priests. The weekday Mass schedule re-
mains the same at both churches.
Sincerely in Christ,
Fr. John Maduri
THANK YOU FR. DELLAPORTE This weekend is Fr. Dominic Dellaporte’s last weekend
with us at Sts. Simon & Jude Parish. Many thanks to Father
for his service to our parish during this past year. We are
most grateful for his generous spirit in assisting us and we
wish him all good things as he prepares to return to his
home in the archdiocese of Newark, NJ.
I am also grateful to His Eminence Joseph Cardinal Tobin
for permitting Fr. Dominic to continue to serve in Brooklyn
since last Summer.
Fr. John Maduri
The Rectory Office is
CLOSED
JULY 4th ,5th , 6th & 7th
for the Independence Day Holiday Weekend!
EMHC HOMEBOUND VISITS
Attention all EMHC’S administering Holy Communion to the
Homebound. We ask that you please leave your pyx on the altar
before Mass with the number of hosts you need (if more than
one.) Please do not process up in the Communion line for the
Priests to give you the Host at the time of Communion.
HOLY COMMUNION UNDER BOTH SPECIES Beginning next weekend our parish will no longer distribute Holy
Communion under both species. We oftentimes have Masses with
not enough extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion to assist
which leads to Communion lines that stretch from the foot of the
sanctuary to the back of the church. While we must never rush
any part of the Mass, at the same time the liturgy is to have a
proper flow to itself. As anyone can see, one of the ministers goes
to the handicapped section and then to the Choir loft leaving the
Priest to distribute the Eucharist to the rest of the congregation.
This will be problematic in particular when the children from
religious education return in September which should bring the
11:00am Mass to approximately 450 people.
From next week forward, there will be a priest and minister at the
foot of the sanctuary and one at the break while the other minister
takes care of our physically challenged parishioners and the mu-
sic ministry. Please keep in mind that the Host contains both the
Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ.
2019 MASS BOOK (JULY-DECEMBER 2019)
The second half of our Mass book has officially opened! Please
note that we will be accepting Mass intentions from July-
December 2019. Masses are $15 each and can be reserved
through the rectory office. The 11:00am Mass will be our weekly
multi intention Mass. Please be aware of the new Mass schedule
that will be start the first weekend in July 2019.
SATURDAY
5:15pm Mass in English
SUNDAY
8:30am Mass in Italian & English
11:00am Mass in English
12:30am Mass in Spanish
ANNUAL BOXES OF ENVELOPES The boxes are in! The Annual boxes of weekly envelopes will be
displayed in the back of the Church starting this weekend. You
are invited to pick up your envelopes after Mass. Please note that
the boxes are arranged in alphabetical order for your conven-
ience . Also, the boxes are smaller due to the fact that the enve-
lopes only go from July to December. As of January of next year
we will be using a new company, so in December you will re-
ceive another new box. For more information call the rectory dur-
ing office hours.

THE AVE MARIA
(PART 2)
When we pray the Hail Mary, we are giving honor to our Blessed Mother who is a mother to all of us and has attained the highest of human virtues. We are also honoring God, who created her. Just as an artist is giving praise when his masterpiece is praised, so too is God given praise when we praise the wonderful things he has done in Mary. For Mary is truly, in a sense, his masterpiece. She is perfect in every way, as perfect as a human being can be. Only Jesus, who is both fully man and fully God, can be said to be a perfect human being. As we discussed in our last reflection, Mary was conceived without any stain of sin. She is “full of grace”. Because of this, it can be said that “the Lord” truly “is with” her and she is “blessed among woman”.
When we get to the second half of the Hail Mary, we see an interesting phrase, “Mother of God”. Though this seems clear to our 21st Century Catholic minds, it has not always been so clear, and even in some Protestant and evangelical circles today we hear of debates as to whether or not we can call Mary the mother of God. The argument, which has remained the same throughout the last several hundred years, is that Mary was the mother of Jesus’ human na-ture, but not his divine nature; so we can’t call her the Mother of God. What this fails to take into ac-count is that when you become a mother, you don’t become the mother of a nature, you become the mother of a person. The fatal mistake in this false understanding of Mary’s relationship to Jesus actu-ally has less to do with Mary then it does to Jesus. Jesus is fully human, and he is fully divine. He is a man, yet he is also God, at the same time, always and without end. Jesus is God. Mary is the mother of Jesus. Therefore, Mary is given the title of Mother of God.
The final part of the Ave Maria is a petition: “pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death”. This recalls several important points: 1) Mary is a great intercessor for us. She sits by Jesus’ side and intercedes on our behalf. She was given to the Church as a mother at the Cross, when Jesus en-trusted her to his beloved disciple. She loves us as a true mother to us and wants what is best for us. We can trust her to pray for our intentions. 2) We are sinners. We must allow this truth to sink in if we are ever to have true repentance. All of us have fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). 3) There is something significant about the hour of the death.
For one thing, we should keep it in mind as a re-minder of what each of us will have to one day pass through. To get to eternal life, we have to die. There is no resurrection without a cross. But, we don’t have to go through it alone. Just as Mary was with Jesus through his darkest moments to comfort him by her presence, so to will she be there for all of her children who want her assistance.
Mary will never abandon us. If we entrust ourselves to her, she will lead us to her Son, to dwell with him forever.
Jonah Soucy
