Greetings Parishioners, Wow! I can’t believe it has been three weeks since I officially began my service as your Director of Music Ministry. My time here so far has been wonderful! As summer flies by, hopefully not too fast, I am busy working behind the scenes to prepare for what I hope will be an exciting music year. We will re-energize existing ministries as well as introduce some new ministries to reach the diversity of this amazing parish. The first ministry to re-launch beginning the first weekend of August is our Cantor Ministry. Do you have a strong voice? Can you read music? Want to proclaim the scriptures through song? I invite you to pray and consider whether or not God is calling you to serve in this ministry, to be a part of the team that leads our weekend worship experience year round. If you have served as a Cantor and want to continue to serve or if you are new to this ministry, please contact me via phone, email or visit me in the Music Ministry area after Mass. We will be having a Cantor Formation Night on Wednesday, August 2 at 7:00pm in the Church. Please RSVP by Sunday, July 30. Musically in Christ, Patrick

CONFRONTING A CULTURE OF VIOLENCE: A CATHOLIC FRAMEWORK FOR ACTION With all that has and is happening in our neighborhoods, cities, and world at large, I am again posting below the brief article on confronting A Culture of Violence by the National Catholic Conference of United States Bishops (USCCB). Our families are torn by violence. Our communities are destroyed by violence. Our faith is tested by violence. We have an obligation to respond. Violence -- in our homes, our schools and streets, our nation and world -- is destroying the lives, dignity and hopes of millions of our sisters and brothers. Fear of violence is paralyzing and polarizing our communities. The celebration of violence in much of our media, music and even video games is poisoning our children. Beyond the violence in our streets is the violence in our hearts. Hostility, hatred, despair and indifference are at the heart of a growing culture of violence. Verbal violence in our families, communications and talk shows contribute to this culture
of violence. Pornography assaults the dignity of women and contributes to violence against them. Our social fabric is being torn apart by a culture of violence that leaves children dead on our streets and families afraid in our homes. Our society seems to be growing numb to human loss and suffering. A nation born in a commitment to "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" is haunted by death, imprisoned by fear and caught up in the elusive pursuit of protection rather than happiness. A world moving beyond the Cold War is caught up in bloody ethnic, tribal and political conflict. It doesn't have to be this way. It wasn't always this way. We can turn away from violence; we can build communities of greater peace. It begins with a clear conviction: respect for life. Respect for life is not just a slogan or a program; it is a fundamental moral principle flowing from our teaching on the dignity of the human person. It is an approach to life that values people over things.
Respect for life must guide the choices we make as individuals and as a society: what we do and won't do, what we value and consume, whom we admire and whose example we follow, what we support and what we oppose. Respect for human life is the starting point for confronting a culture of violence. The Catholic community cannot ignore the moral and human costs of so much violence in our midst. These brief reflections are a call to conversion and a framework for action. They propose neither a sweeping plan nor specific programs. They recognize the impressive efforts already underway in dioceses, parishes and schools. They offer a word of support and gratitude for those already engaged in these efforts. We believe the Catholic community brings strong convictions and vital experience which can enrich the national dialogue on how best to overcome the violence that is tearing our nation apart. We know these reflections are not enough. Words cannot stop weapons; statements will not contain hatred. Yet commitment and conversion can change us and together we can change our culture and communities. Person by person, family by family, neighborhood by neighborhood, we must take our communities back from the evil and fear that come with so much violence. We believe our faith in Jesus Christ gives us the values, vision and hope that can bring an important measure of peace to our hearts, our homes, and our streets.
Let Us Stand As One: One Nation, Under God, As one Family, As One People of Prayer. Let us Stand As One together in Prayer and make this prayer of St. Francis our daily prayer for peaceful resolution to acts of violence. May the Peace of Christ come into our world.
Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon; Where there is error, the truth;
Where there is doubt, faith; Where there is despair, hope; Where there is darkness, light; Where there is sadness, joy.
O, Divine Master, Grant that I may not so much seek
To be consoled, as to console; To be understood as to understand;
To be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive;
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned; It is in dying that we are born again to eternal life.
Amen!

Next Sunday’s Scriptures A reflection on the readings for Mass Sunday, July 23 The Holy Spirit brings life and peace. Today we hear about God as a Father who is both merciful and just, about God who is mighty, and about the Spirit who comes to our aid. Let us turn to the life-giving Holy Spirit for guidance and grace so we may continue growing in holiness, so we bear an effective witness to the Gospel, and so we may experience Christ’s gift of peace more fully in our lives and hearts. In the Book of Wisdom, Wisdom 12:13, 16-19, we hear that God is both mighty and lenient. The second reading, Romans 8:26-27, reminds us that the Spirit helps us in our weakness, and intercedes for us according to God’s will. In the Gospel, Matthew 13:24-43 or 13:24-30, Jesus teaches about God’s kingdom, and offers parables of grain and weeds to explain it.

Steubenville Youth Conference Please pray for the five St. Jude youth who are attending the Steubenville Youth Conference this weekend along with teens from parishes within the Lansing Region. The students are experiencing engaging talks, daily Mass, and powerful Eucharistic Adoration.
This is the first year that St. Jude is sending people to the Conference but certainly will not be the last. A huge thank you goes out to all who have contributed donations to help offset the cost for this unique and worthwhile event.
Summer Service Days
Last week, students from St. Jude explored the Corporal Works of Mercy as they did service to our parish and Prestige Pines.
The students engaged in feeding the hungry by cleaning our hall kitchen as well as making cookies for the people at Prestige Pines. They also were planning on taking part in cleaning graves at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, thus learning about and experience the Corporal Work of Mercy of burying the dead, however, the weather did not cooperate. This event will be rescheduled.
This fall, we plan to rekindle our connection with the Faith in Flint initiative and revisit the St. Francis Prayer Center and the people who live around it.

Family Faith Formation, an alternative to traditional Faith Formation, is a strong,
parent-led program for children in grades 1 through 4 or children who have special
development challenges through 8th grade.
Families complete each unit at home using provided lesson plans and online resources before joining the large group of registered
families for monthly (8) sessions. This allows for children to receive instruction at home and
still be in community with other Catholic families and peers.
Large group activities include a healthy snack,
service projects, prayer services, games, special guests and unit review.

Are You On The Right Path? Life is a gift from God but some people just go along and let it happen while others have goals and plans for life that need to be adjusted periodically. It is important for all of us to have a plan for life, to set goals for ourselves and check up on them from time to time to make sure we are making progress toward our goals and to make changes when necessary. The most important goal for each of us is to become saints, people who are welcomed to heaven upon our deaths. As some have put it, we should want to have our faces on pictures of the saints sometime in the future. Great goals like becoming saints takes a lot of planning and work throughout our lives. We have the church and the Sacraments to help us grow on the path to holiness. Make use of the opportunities you have to get this extra help in your journey toward sainthood. One of the reasons for our faith communities is to help each other in our efforts to become saints. The Sacrament of Reconciliation and the Eucharist are both tremendous helps to us as we strive for heaven. For married couples the common goal is to help each other to become saints and for parents the goal for their children is to help them to achieve this same goal of sainthood. Saints are people who live in holiness. We attain holiness as we participate with God’s grace and walk the way of love while avoiding the path of sin. Holy people do not all have a religious vocation as a priest, nun, brother etc.; holiness is a part of all vocations and occupations. One of the ways that you can grow in holiness is to participate in the CALLED & GIFTED WORKSHOP to be held on Friday, August 18 from 5-9pm and Saturday, August 19 from 10am until 4pm. Join with others who are discerning the gifts that they have received from God so they can bring His love and grace to the world. It is vital to know what God is calling you to do in your life. Take these two days and examine how God is calling you and others to do His work and inviting you to take part in making the world live up to the reasons He created the earth and all its people. What could be more important. You still have many other summer weekends to enjoy the wonderful summer weather. You may register through the parish website: stjudedewitt.com or call Terry Humenik for more information.
