The unique design of the SAFEHIP® AirX™ models makes them more user-friendly, breathable and comfortable -and offers a significant improvement over the previous generation designs. If hip protectors are bulky or unattractive, and are visible through clothing, there is a very real chance that the patient will not wear them, leaving themselves unprotected and at risk. This is why we have expressly designed and manufactured SAFEHIP® AirX™ to be as discreet and attractive as possible – while still giving the same high level of protection for which SAFEHIP® is renowned.
The “secret” is the AirX™ shield. SAFEHIP® AirX™ hip protectors are 100% textile all the way through which makes them 100% breathable and much cooler to wear than hip protectors with shields made of synthetic foams or with a hard plastic shell.
All models are easy to take on and off, are comfortable to wear and invisible to others.
We have designed SAFEHIP® AirX™ in different styles for different patients and a wide range of different needs – from the very active user who is self reliant – to the dependent geriatric patient in a nursing home. We have used a high proportion of cotton in the pants to make them as comfortable and as much like regular underwear as possible. Also, as an added benefit, all of our pants are designed to act as fixation pants to hold an incontinence pad in place securely.

AirX™ is a three dimensional spacer fabric which is ideally suited to absorb impacts and cushion the body from falls. One of the unique features of the material is that it has the ability to wick moisture efficiently away from the skin, helping to keep the patient cooler than any other hip protector available today (according to EMPA test report no. 448819, March 2009). Leaving the patient dryer and more comfortable and less likely to suffer from any skin problems and ulceration.
AirX™ is made of a soft, lightweight material that per-fectly follows the contours of the body. This means that the flexible AirX™ conforms perfectly to the patient’s body shape so that it feels extremely comfortable to wear – even for long periods at a time. This means that choosing SAFEHIP® AirX™ will result in a much improved patient compliance.
The textile shields also allow for easy washing and dry-ing of the SAFEHIP® AirX™ hip protectors. They can be washed more than 80 times at temperatures up to 95°C and dried at the highest possible drying temperatures without damaging the shield.
We have tested SAFEHIP® AirX™ in a leading European hospital laundry, washing at more then 80°C and drying at over 150°C. The pants performed very well with no discemable damage or wear during the predicted life of the product. The impact absorbtion remained unaf-fected.
Why do we use AirX™ shields? Easier to wash and dry

SAFEHIP® is the most thoroughly tested hip protector in the world. It has been tested on more than 7000 users in clinical trials in Scandinavia, Holland, Germany, Japan and Australia, and the results are unequivocal: SAFEHIP® has a significant effect in reducing the number of hip fractures.
The study “Predictors of Adherence to the Use of Hip Protectors in Nursing Homes Residents”1 evaluated the effects of an intervention programme aimed at in-creasing adherence to the use of external hip protectors and thereby reducing hip fractures. The study concluded that the effective use of hip protectors can prevent hip fractures. More specifically, trials of hip protectors in nursing homes showed a significant reduction in hip fractures.
Similar effects were also proven in 2008 in another study: “Risk of hip fractures in soft protected, hard protected, and unprotected falls” 2. The study was carried out in Norway with the participation of 18 Norwegian nursing homes with a total of 1236 patients. The nursing homes were randomized to offer either soft or hard hip protectors. The objective of the study was to compare hip fracture risk in soft and hard protected falls to the risk in unprotected falls. Then to compare the incidence of hip fractures in nursing homes that
provide soft and hard protectors for their residents. Hip protectors used in the study were SAFEHIP® Soft and SAFEHIP® Hard.
The conclusion of the comparison between hip fractures in soft protected, hard protected and unprotected falls shows that both types of hip protectors have the po-tential, when worn correctly, to considerably reduce the risk of a hip fracture in falls. Both can be recommended to nursing home residents as a means of preventing hip fractures.
The study “Uptake and adherence with soft- and hard-shelled hip protectors in Norwegian Nur-sing homes” 3 from 2007 published in International Osteoporosis Foundation and National Osteoporosis Foundation showed that there was no clinically relevant difference in the acceptance and probability of conti-nued use between soft and hard-shelled hip protectors in nursing homes. However, significantly more users of the soft hip protector used the protector 24 hours a day because it was more comfortable.
SAFEHIP® is the most clinically proven hip protector on the market. Since the mid nineties it has been thoroughly tested in multiple studies around the world. To see ex-tracts of all the clinical studies visit www.safehip.com.

For elderly people, who often have a weakened balance, reduced strength and even may be influenced by mede-cine, one of the worst things that can happen from a fall is a broken hip. And so many different things may cause a fall - a loose carpet, a tree root on the footpath or an accidental stumble over a high kerb during shopping.
The consequences of a hip fracture are often very serious. The older the person is, the longer the healing process will take and is likely to be more complicated. Rehabilitation is also a long, hard process, and in many cases is never complete. Many patients will experience permanent injury, loss of mobility, and their independent active life will end.
Active people suffer the most
Studies show that for a large percentage of people over 60 who have a hip fracture repaired, their mobility is seriously impaired afterwards. Even simple things like using stairs, getting out of bed, or getting dressed become harder to do unaided.
The table shows what a group of test subjects could do before they suffered a hip fracture – and then 6 months afterwards:
In other words – the result is often a major loss of inde-pendence and quality of life. The more active the patient was prior to the accident, the harder they will be hit by now leading a more passive and sedentary life. That is why hip protectors are not only for the weak and elderly.

SAFEHIP® has always been the leading pioneer within hip protection. Right from the start we have been at the forefront of innovation and development through re-search and rigorous testing to help create improved safe products.
The SAFEHIP® AirX™ products of today are based on our specially patented “horseshoe-shaped” shield. In the event of a fall on the hip, the SAFEHIP® AirX™ shield disperses the energy of the impact away from the greater trochanter (hip bone). This means that the
energy from the fall is absorbed by the soft tissue and the muscles around the femoral neck, thereby reducing the risk of a hip fracture. It has taken years of research to develop the shape and the materials used for the shield, and our studies conti-nue – focusing on the demands and requirements of the users. Research carried out over the last few years has resulted in a material which is getting thinner and more comfortable to wear without compromising the recogni-sed and well documented security of SAFEHIP®.

SAFEHIP® Unisex
The designs of SAFEHIP® hip protector pants ensure optimum protection and come in three models – a male, a female and a unisex model. The pants are flexible and comfortable to wear, not too warm, and may be used with incontinence pads as a fixation pant. The male and female versi-ons have been designed to perform like regular underwear, with a fly opening in the male model and lace-look detail on the female. When the gender of the patient is not known in advance, the Unisex brief is suitable for both. They are also very durable and can be washed in industrial washing machines at up to 95˚C. Available in white. Male and female models come with sewn in and removable shields.
