WEATHER ALERT! FLASH WAVE..OF PEOPLE!
Response to Reading 1 for Wasik essay
After youve completed the reading for class, please answer the following questions. Type up your
work, print it out, and bring it to class. We will use these to guide class discussion. This work also
counts as part of your final grade and will be used in your portfolio.
1. Where did you do this reading? (in your room? the library? etc.) What time of the day? Whatabout the time and place helped or hindered your reading experience?
-I did my reading in my room during Wednesday morning. In the morning I am more awake to
work on school assignments then I would if I wrote them at night. My brain is usually saying Its
almost time to sleep Marie. And would do the assignment half asleep.
2. What prior knowledge / experience did you bring to this reading that helped you understand it?-I have been invited to join a flash mob at the mall I work at and do the famous Michael Jackson
thriller. However, since I work there, many security people would have probably remembered
my face, so I turned it down. It is my job.
3. What hindered your reading of the text? (e.g. time constraints, lack of knowledge, etc.)-The places in the beginning of the text. I realize this was in England, however I am not
knowledgeable of where all these cities and towns are. Or who the people were. I didnt think the
short story Flash Crowd really did anything for this piece.
4. How did you engage with the text? For example, did you underline, highlight, annotate, and takenotes, look up words, research anything you read about, just read? It may be helpful here to
indicate what format your text was inpaper copy or electronic and think about how the mode of
a text influences how you read.
-I looked up words and places. MapQuest and the dictionary can really be your friend when
youre reading about different places. For example, Einfield, Essexx, or Twickenham. I also
looked at the pictures, if they are available to you, why not use them? It helps have a better
understanding of what happened with the flash mobbers.
5. Are we begin our inquiry into this topic, what are three areas of interest you from this article thatyoud want us to explore more fully and why?-Scott said the reason all these riots broke out where because of poor policing. Why would
someone leave it to the police to be responsible?
-Why exactly do people riot? The trend? Get a message across?
-If they leave electronic trails, couldnt the police force find it? Via web, via mobile, or tweet?
6. What are your suggestions for how we may focus class discussion today? It may be offering aquote you found interesting or confusing and want to explore more. It may be a concept you think

we should talk about. It could be some tangential idea you want to talk about. Or perhaps its
some guiding question for the class to consider.
-Basically answering questions of flash mobs. People always do things for a reason. Why people
would want to do these flash mobs?. Then asking if anyone has had encounters with them.
