Strike Three As another inning draws near, we find ourselves with two strikes (June and July) on us and facing our final out or month of summer. As I step out of the batter’s box and reflect on the summer passing by I remember the rides and fun I’ve had already and we have one strike left…or do we? This game we call riding season has many innings and endless strikes, which means we may never reach strike three.
We are in August, the third month of summer and too many of that signifies the end of summer and some, the riding season. We’re fortunate and don’t have to fall into the mindset that once summer (or August) is over, riding season has come to an end and we have to wait till the next inning for the fun to begin again…not true! We have activities that can entertain us through-out the off-season, if you will. As a GWRRA chapter and family, we enjoy gathering together for social events or just dinner to talk and plan for the next inning, so we can make the most of it…and make the most of it we do!
For example this strike (August) we have a Corn Roast (wonder what they have planned for all that but-ter?) at Jeff & Terri Curtis’ to look forward too. Then it’s off to the mid night run for a relaxing weekend. Many refer to this as the last big hurrah for the riding season and it can have that feel as you experience the cool straits weather. However, on the heels of the mid night run will be the Labor Day Campout and family picnic…whew! Tired yet?
After our August strike we move into the changing of sides as we take the field and defend against post-season boredom. Not to worry! We have events planned for the post season as well. Tom Taylor is planning a Moonshiners Run for anyone wanting to head south for some twisted fun…I mean twisty fun.
Next, this year we have moved our Rootin Tootin Rodeo Roundup to October and I believe it was a good move. We will be having a new band to entertain you and your family/friends. Another annual event many anticipate is the appreciation dinner, hosted by a long time member Don Gaddes at his business in Brooklyn.
This event is to thank you the chapter members for all your efforts selling raffle tickets, without which the chapter would not have the operating budget for the year we have, allowing us to enjoy more events without having to worry about raising additional funds. I haven’t even touched on the Christmas Party, Mall Show, chap-ter visits, game nights and the many dinner rides that will be spread out over the post season.
So as I step back into the batter’s box…look at the team and take my best swing at August I have plenty to look forward between riding seasons and the final strike of summer…strike three…let the fun continue.
Tom Wacker Chapter J Director
I'm remembering when we were in the Blue Ridge Moun-tains and it was a very nice day to ride. The weather report warned of thunderstorms, but we had rain gear. After all, getting wet is a part of motorcycling, right? When we came around the mountain, we ran right into a thunder-storm. No bridges or tunnels or any other place to get out of it. What did we do? That's to come. What do you do during a thunder & lighting storm According to the National Weather Service, lighting is the most under estimated weather hazards in the country. On an average it kills more people in the U.S. than tornadoes and hurricanes. Every thunderstorm contains the potential to be deadly, even the small pop-up ones. Lightning can strike from as far away as ten miles from the center of the storm. It is the first to arrive and the last to leave. You should wait 30 minutes before going out after the last sound of thunder. What should you do if caught outside during a thun-derstorm? When possible get indoors or get into a car, truck or bus. Stay away from buildings with open area's. When you cannot get inside, try to find an over-pass. Stop under it and get up away from the roadway, but stay away from the steel beams as they conduct elec-tricity. The very last thing you can do is find a low spot and take cover, stay away from signs poles and light poles. Should you be able to get indoors, stay away from electri-cal things like computers, phones and the TV. Keep a ra-dio on but place it away from people. Do not use the bath-room or take a shower. Ground water and underground pipes conduct electricity.
According to an article written by Don Francisco, I'll share these lighting facts: Lighting can strike from as far as ten miles from the center of the storm. Lighting can strike before the rain and up to 30 minutes after the rain. Lightning can be as hot as 54,000 degrees; five

Hi! Everyone July sure did go by fast. From Wing Ding to the Michi-
gan District Rally made July fly by. Now into August and Jeff and Teri’s “Corn Roast this Sunday after the gather-ing. Then later in the month the Midnight Ride. Hope all of you who can take the time will make it a weekend not to miss.
Since there has been so many activities it would be really nice to see some articles about what you partici-pated in and where. It really is a lot of fun to read your adventures.
We finally got our fence in to complete our Landscap-ing. We have been watering quite frequently and every-thing looks so beautiful. My Nephew (Todd) has really done a great job. Not done yet but soon the back of the house will look as beautiful as the front. Now I have started another project. My Sewing Room. I have com-pletely taken everything out, and am now in the process of painting it, new carpet, new storage cabinets (9 kitchen cabinets), new desk, and new ceiling fan. This will keep you know who from his 2 hour power naps for quite some time, as he has to put the cabinets and ceiling fan to-gether. We went Tuesday to the Ikea store in Canton, Mi and picked up the cabinets. You know who said there must be 500 lbs in the truck. I just know there are a lot of boxes. When it is finished my quilt sisters told me to call it “Mary’s Design Studio”, sounds good to me.
We will be working to update the Welcome Package so if anything has changed since we updated it 3 years ago, please let me know.
Have a great month and ride safe
times that of the sun's surface. An average bolt of light-ning has 30,000 amperes of charge, and 100 million volts of electrical potential.
What did we do when suddenly confronted by a thunderstorm? We were blessed to actually find a school and were able to get under an outside awn-ing. Not the safest place, but better than being out in the storm. We should have planned better or taken a different route away from the storm. Maybe we should have just stayed an extra day and been safe. I know that on our next trip we will have alternate plans and routes ready just in case of storms.
Plan well and ride safe.

Thanks to all Chapter J members who assisted in the ticket sales in Down Town Hanover. Jan for her ex-pert cooking of the dead hog. She is a real SWEET lady. Cheryl and Deb for their help. I worked hard to have Mike give them some time in the dunk tank. He said as sweet as they are they would melt in the tank. I think so to. I was glad to see that some members brought friends and family. That is what it is all about. Thank Louie, he did his usual great job on the ticket sales. Mary’s got her work cut out for her to make this a good news letter article.
Mike was happy with the 250 dollars they made for the burn camp. They plan on coming back next year. We will need more dunkees. Let me know, I will put in a word for you. The first drop was cold after that it was fun. I wished more of J members would try it, maybe next year.
The Michigan District Rally will be over by the time this makes the news letter. I’m sure Karen and I will see a lot of friends we haven't seen since last year. After 20 years of Rallys we know a lot of members.
Sunday before the rally I helped Karen make cook-ies to take with us Thursday. Can not say I need any safety chrome for bike, got every thing I can think of and need. Makes a real good 4 day getaway.
Sorry we haven’t made more rides but other things came up and haven't got many miles in. We are plan-ning the midnight ride, how many others going? We have a room at the Water front.
Hope to see you there. Larry & Karen Bradley Chapter J Assistant Directors

Please send Mary Dodge any Thank You notes you would like the sendee to have and she will put them in the Newsletter. We will reveal our Secret Buddies at the December 2011 Christmas Party. Just a quick note If anyone mails the new musical cards, be sure to
check with the Post Office and have the proper amount of stamps on the card. One person has received a card and had to pay 50 cents to get his /her card because (of course) the return address is not on the card. So just a heads-up for the rest of the people wanting to send those fun musical cards. Pat May-
nard
Reminder - it is FUN to just recognize your Secret Buddy any time that you want with a card. You can find a reason almost every month to celebrate something, but even when there isn't a holiday or a birthday or anniversary, keep in touch with them and keep them guessing. This doesn't have to be an expensive thing when you want to give somethng for any reason - birthday, anniversary, holi-day, just because. So start the FUN and keep your SECRET BUDDY guessing. Don’t forget to Thank them with a little message in the Newslet-ter.
Thanks Everyone Julie Hoover Dear Secret Buddie—What a nice surprise to find out-side my door. I love the gorgeous pink suede bag, and the beautiful whip crème pink tassels, and the
