The 3rd grad- ers worked hard on what they felt were good guidelines that would go along with our PBIS program that we have implemented at Cascade Elementary this school year. Our mission statement is, “We are the friendly, fun third graders at Cascade Elementary who want to to learn new things every day, have fun with our friends, and work hard so we can “ROAR” our way through the year.” Our ground rules are to respect others and yourself, be quiet when working, keep your hands and feet to yourself, raise your hand for permission to speak, and give your full attention to the speaker. This year our goals will be working on learning new vo- cabulary, improving our math computation, and respecting others. We have set behavior goals that we will try and meet before the end of each month. If we are successful with our goals then we will decide how we want to celebrate. We are tracking our progress in our data folders which will be shared with parents at conferences. We have enjoyed having our student teacher Mrs. Leytem in our classroom. We will miss her greatly, and wish her the best at her next placement in Farley. The students have loved using the Ipads in class. Many math and reading apps have been downloaded for students to practice what they are learning in class. 2nd grader news The two second grade classrooms worked together to come up with our Mission Statements and Ground Rules. Our mission statement is as follows: 2nd grade Mission Statement: We, the COOL Second Graders of Cascade Elementary, will do our best every day, treat others the way we want to be treated, while R.O.A.Ring! We came up with ground rules so everyone knows ex- actly how we need to act in the classroom they are: 1. Give your attention to the speaker 2. Keep your hands and feet to yourself 3. Treat others the way you want to be treated 4. Use your classroom voice Having our Mission Statement and ground rules in place will help the second graders have a wonderful year. Our first unit in reading was Making Friends. We have read several stories about going back to school, moving to a new country, and making new friends. The goal of this unit was to demonstrate how to welcome new students into our lives in a kind way. One exiting thing we have had so far this year is being able to enjoy our two iPads in each classroom. We do many different reading and math games on these. A fun and educational app we found was “Rocket Spelling.” Blindness and the struggles of 6th grade students riley reed, left and alexis shaffer and are shown blindfolded. Over the past few weeks the sixth graders of Mr. Blakesley’s class have been learning about blindness through Phillip, the main character in the book en- titled The Cay, by Theodore Taylor. The student per- formed a variety of tasks to put themselves in the shoes of Phillip. These tasks were performed blindfolded and consisted of paper cutting, identifying items in a box, obstacle course and weav- ing mats. The mat weaving was an activity that related directly to the book as Phil- lip has to do this task while blind. On Oct. 5, 2012 to kick off fire prevention week, the Cas- cade Fire Department and Cascade Police Department visited Cascade Elementary. The fire fighters spoke to the classes about fire safety, STOP, DROP and ROLL and how to get out quickly and safely in case of a fire. They talked to us about making sure the smoke detectors in our homes have fresh batter- ies and that we need to have a family meeting place in case of a fire. The fire fighters also brought their gear for us to try on and experience first- hand how heavy it is! There was also a very spe- cial fire fighter who dressed in full gear, including his air tank and mask to demon- strate what they may sound like if they were coming to rescue us. They also showed us what they do and use to make sure they stay safe as they are protecting us. After our demonstration we toured the Dubuque County Smoke house. While on our tour, we learned about the dangers in the kitchen and how to stay safe in our homes. We talked about how to exit our bedroom when there is smoke and we evac- uated the house by climbing down a ladder! Once on the ground, we practice calling 911 and giving all the im- portant information the fire department or the police will need in an emergency. We want to send a big thank you to these men and women who work so hard to keep us safe. We appreciated their visit and were very ex- cited to go home and share what we learned. outside the dubuque county smoke House fireman todd Merfeld talks to first grade students Gavin delaney, tristan rausch, Jesus nunez barrios and reynaldo Vega. Fire prevention week JAM THE VAN by taylor Menster and Mallory bourgeous Mrs. McLaughlin’s fourth grade class has won Jam the Van. We brought toilet paper, tooth brushes, tooth paste, combs, napkins, shampoo, house cleaners, paper towels and deodorant. We brought in 258 items. all the items are going to the food pantry. We won Maid rite pizzas. R.O.A.R. The students at Cascade Elementary are working very hard on building character and making good choices. All the children at Cascade Elementary are working hard to be ROAR students. A ROAR student demonstrates behavior that is Respectful , On your honor, Accepting, and Responsible. On a daily basis, staff members “catch” students demonstrating these behaviors and the student showing the behavior is given a token. Tokens are turned into the office at the end of each week and class totals are shown on a graph by the office. At the end of the month, the tokens are all put into a tub and names are drawn for prizes donated by local businesses. We are finding this is a great way to promote positive behaviors and are looking forward to seeing continuous improvement in our student body. oliver delaney shows off the token he earned for showing responsible behavior. Community Partnership with Riverview Community Partnership was shared this month with Riverview Educator, Jessica Pape. Jessica reached out to pre-kindergarten thru sixth grade students to address topics such as body safety and cyberbullying. Our 5th and 6th graders welcome her return later this year to provide information relating to sexual harassment and bullying. Preventative education is important in order for a child to understand what to do if a situation should occur as well as techniques to prevent something hap- pening when a parent is not with a child. The messages Jessica shares can keep a child safe now and later as an adult.
