Overall, if I was to publish my magazine I would use an e-zine publisher. This is because they can provide the best of both worlds, an online magazine and print publication. This means my consumers can choose between which method they want to use to view my content and It can appeal to readers who like traditional magazines, yet still keep up with today’s advancing technology and the generation who like everything digital. Joomag is perfect for this. Firstly, if I distributed my magazine with Joomag, it would mean there’d be no limitations to who can view it because they distribute and tailor content for all mobile and tablet devices which means no one will be left out. I feel this is important because I have used both an iPhone and Android and it was really frustrating that I couldn’t use certain apps on my Samsung that I was previously able to on my iPhone. I would not want potential readers to feel like this, and with Joomag they wouldn’t have to.
In terms of technology, Joomag and a few of the other e-zine publishers provide interactive magazine features,; as a Music magazine, I feel this can be very beneficial because my readers would be able to hear songs and watch music videos which will give them the full experience of any magazine story.
I would also be able to make social media links active on my magazine which means a pop up of my magazine’s social sites can appear and the reader won’t be redirected away from the magazine page. It also means the reader doesn’t have to remember to “follow Khords” as they can do it easily from the magazine. I also found during my research that users engage more with interactive digital media than they do with standard digital media.
I do like the idea of a smartphone app for my magazine, especially because I could use push notifications to remind consumers there’s a new issue or persuade them to read an exclusive story. Although, with an e-zine, they can create html 5 websites for smartphones which means taping, zooming and pinching will run just as smoothly in the phone’s browser as it would in an app. Not to mention, it means the user doesn’t have to download anything in order to read my magazine, this avoids limitations such as “full storage”.
For my target audience (females age 15-23) I feel like a traditional publishing house can only provide me with print (which I can get from Joomag anyway) which won’t interest or appeal to my young audience as much as a digital magazine would.
Lastly, it’s easy for a e-magazine to be embedded and shared on social media which means it’s likely to reach more people and I would be able to see progress as Joomag and Issuu can track the progress of your magazine worldwide with advanced analytics.
