Grimaldi Group increases expenditure programme to over Euro 2 billion to meet environmental challenges
In the International Maritime Organization community, regulators and industry are now discussing ways to achieve big cuts to CO2 emissions over the coming
decades – possibly as much as 40%. This will be our contribution to the wellbeing of the generations that follow us. For the Grimaldi Group, emissions reduction and energy saving is not just about helping the ecosystem. This is also a matter of survival.Inefficient, polluting vessels are set to be pushed out of world markets by the coming regulatory clampdown, irrespective of the future price of oil. Only the most fuel-efficient ships, many of them battery-powered, will be able to compete. The investments required to keep up with the latest technological advances will favour groups with sizeable balance sheets, thereby accelerating the wave of consolidation we have already seen in the container sector. The coming digital revolution will also bring about the next paradigm shift in intermodality. Our Group is proud to announce a new wave of investment that we believe will ensure our place among those who will emerge strengthened by these environ-mental challenges. We are placing orders for six ro-ro newbuildings (and four op-tions) that will boast a range of innovative design elements that are under patent/copyright. This G5GG generation of ships will be equipped with an air lubrication system creating bubble layers beneath the hull to reduce friction and consump-tion, as well as solar panels and inverters, a hydrodynamic designed reverse bow, pitch-propeller integrated with rudder bulb and optimized hull lines for unprec-edented performance. The vessels will also produce zero emissions in port thanks to onboard large size lithium batteries, a world-first. New generation electronically controlled main en-gines will be installed with scrubbers which will reduce PM and sulphur emissions 40-fold, thereby ensuring emissions well beyond compliance with forthcoming global low-sulphur fuel rules. Loading capacity will be around 500 trailer units, around double that of their predecessors, while maintaining the same manning and fuel requirements. In terms of fuel consumption per tonne-kilometre, this re-sults in a doubling in both efficiency and environmental performance.Once these vessels are delivered, beginning of 2020, we plan to move on to the next investment phase, which will involve the design and construction of a giant ferry series, which will again be twice as efficient as its predecessors. These newbuilding plans follow large investments in scrubber retrofitting and the lengthening of a series of ships. In addition to what has already been done, we are due to start a further investment for another Euro 60 million for the lengthening of the Cruise Roma and Cruise Barcelona at Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri. Once complete, the revamped vessels will boast ice-cream parlours and restaurants serving Sardinian dishes. Passenger decks will accommodate an additional 500 seats and 50 cabins, bringing total passenger capacity to 3,500. When newbuildings, retrofits and lengthening projects are combined, our Group has over the last four years committed to an investment programme of around Euro 2.3 billion, the equivalent of close to a year’s Group turnover.Investments have been enabled by solid, consistent profitability. Consolidated profits have remained above 10% of turnover despite capital expenditure, and our equity ratio has increased from 49% to 51%, meaning we are today less reliant on debt. Many Group subsidiaries have reported first class results in the first six months of this year.Enjoy the latest Grimaldi News.

FLEET
O n August 11th, the Atlantic Sun
has finally taken its place in
the ACL transatlantic sched-
ule by calling the port of Hamburg,
Germany. Registered in the United
Kingdom, it is the fifth and final ves-
sel of the G4 f leet ordered by ACL to
Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding.
The G4 vessels are the first of their
kind and the largest multipurpose
RORO/Containerships ever built. They
incorporate an innovative design that
increases capacity without significantly
changing the dimensions of the vessel.
The G4s are bigger, greener, more
f lexible and more efficient than their
predecessors. Their container capac-
ity is more than doubled at 3,800 TEUs,
with 28,900 square meters of RORO
space and a car capacity of over 1,300
vehicles. The RORO ramps are wider
and shallower and the RORO decks
are higher (up to 7.4 meters) with fewer
columns, enabling much easier load-
ing and discharge of oversized cargo.
Emissions per TEU are reduced by
65%. The f leet continues to employ
cell-guides on deck, a feature that
will allow ACL to extend its enviable
record: its ships have never lost a con-
tainer over the side.
The Atlantic Sun and its sister vessels
dramatically improve ACL’s competi-
tiveness on the market. The G4 series
of units clearly demonstrate that ACL’s
mother company, the Grimaldi Group,
will continue to invest in ACL’s future
on the North Atlantic. ACL has been
successful during its 50-year history
by doing things differently than all of
its competitors. The Company deploys
unique ships, calls at unique ports and
carries cargo that others cannot.
Combined with Grimaldi’s ever-ex-
panding service network, the G4s ena-
ble ACL to provide even more services
as a high quality container and RORO
operator for years to come.
Today, ACL offers weekly transatlantic
departures, operated as the ACL “A”
service, calling at Baltimore, Norfolk-
PMT, New York, Halifax, Liverpool, Ant-
werp, Hamburg and Gothenburg. The
Company also handles the Grimaldi
Lines’ services between the U.S. and
West Africa and between North Amer-
ica and the Mediterranean. It also of-
fers service for non-containerizeable
cargo to the Middle East, South Africa,
Australia and the Far East.

EVENTS
first convention held in Naples
Last 17th of July the convention of the
recently founded ALIS, the Logis-
tics Association for Sustainable
Intermodality, was held at the Maritime
Station in Naples.
The title of the event was “The growth
of Southern Italy through Sustainable In-
termodal Logistics”. Over 2,500 persons
attended the event among which repre-
sentatives of national and local authori-
ties, port authorities, logistics companies,
shippers, manufacturers, the media, etc.
With an exceptional parterre and numer-
ous speakers contributing to the growth
of ALIS, the debate was conducted by the
popular Italian TV journalist Bruno Vespa.
The conference was organized in three
sessions. The first one, of a business na-
ture, was dedicated to “The Evolution of
Transport and Logistics through Sustain-
able Mode”, while the second one, enti-
tled “The recovery of Southern Italy”, had

first convention held in Naplesa strong institutional connotation. The confer-
ence ended in the afternoon with the “Salotto
dell’ALIS”, which covered issues related to the
new way of making a system in the port area.
Among the distinguished guests who gave
their contribution to the discussion were Ric-
cardo Nencini, Italian vice Minister of Infra-
structures and Transport, Emanuele Grimaldi,
Managing Director of the Grimaldi Group and
vice President of the International Chamber of
Shipping; Alberto Bertone, President of Acqua
Sant’Anna; Alberto Nobis, CEO of Dhl Express
Italia; Pierre Lahutte, Iveco’s Brand President;
Massimo Zanin, CEO of Feed - Gruppo Vero-
nesi; Jacopo Lensi, Representative of the Euro-
pean Investment Bank; Maurizio Lupi, Member
of the Italian Chamber of Deputies; Vincenzo
De Luca, President of the Campania Region;
Ugo Salerno, President of RINA; Franco Fe-
noglio, President of the industrial vehicle sec-
tion of UNRAE; Bartolomeo Giachino, Former
Vice-Minister and expert in Logistics.
“Logistics is a great opportunity for the develop-
ment of Campania and Southern Italy – declared
vice Minister Nencini – and the Ministry has a
logistics plan attached to the Economic and Fi-
nancial Document that foresees massive invest-
ments in intermodality and in rail and road con-
nectivity, especially with the big Italian ports. We
cannot play a role in the Mediterranean, where
we are an important geographic platform, unless
we fill this gap which is very wide”.
“Going with a truck by road from Salerno
or Palermo to Spain costs more than twice –
stressed Emanuele Grimaldi – so reducing
the economic distance by 50% compared to the
geographical distance is already an extraordi-

nary achievement”.
The maritime and port sector was rep-
resented by various authorities, among
which Enrico Maria Pujia, General Di-
rector of the Italian Ministry of Transport,
Francesco Benevolo, Director of RAM;
Zeno D’Agostino, President of Assoporti;
Pietro Spirito, Adsp Central Tyrrhenian
Sea; Pino Musolino, Adsp Northern Adri-
atic Sea; Stefano Corsini, Adsp Northern
Tyrrhenian Sea; Ugo Patroni Griffi, Adsp
South Adriatic Sea; Andrea Annunziata,
Adsp East Sicily Sea; Sergio Prete, Adsp
Ionian Sea and Francesco Maria Di Majo,
Adsp Northern Center Tyrrhenian Sea;
Luca Becce, President of Assiterminal;
Piero Pellizzari, Rear Admiral of the Gen-
eral Command of the Italian Coast Guard.
Among the priorities highlighted during
the conference were the upgrading of
the two Bari-Venice and Genoa-Salerno
maritime routes and the simplification of
administrative procedures.
“Let’s try to launch the continental cabotage,
which is a great revolution – underlined Gui-
do Grimaldi, President of ALIS – it means
reducing the cost of logistics. Italy is far away
from Northern Europe and the most impor-
tant markets, if we can reduce the gap which
is the cost of distance, we allow the South
and Italy as a whole to be more competitive”.
Since its foundation in October 2016, ALIS
has put together 1,200 associated compa-
nies and a labour force of approximately
120,000 persons, about 80,000 trucks with
over 2,700 weekly shipping connections
to the islands with more than 120 lines of
Motorways of the Sea.
“ALIS is really the expression of a moving
Italy – stated Guido Grimaldi -. All together
we are a force capable of giving concrete
answers to the intermodal logistics industry,
an expression of a country that wants to pro-
mote the development of eco-sustainable
combined transport”.

M ichele Autuori Shipping and For-
warding Agency, port and com-
mercial agent for the Grimaldi Group
in Salerno, recently enlarged its offices,
by relocating in two f loors of the same
historic building, in centrally-located
piazza Umberto I.
“Thanks to the positive growth of the
Agency throughout the years, we need-
ed to create an adequate space to re-
ceive our customers, and a structure that
is comfortable and fully operational for
our staff, by improving the quality of the
service offered.- stated Antonia Autuori,
CEO of the Agency - The biggest chal-
lenge was to combine the limitations of a
historic building with radical renovation
works considering the most modern se-
curity systems and latest technologies
with a careful selection of materials and
furniture, in order to reorganize the dif-
ferent departments into wider and more
functional operating spaces, especially
considering the important 150-year an-
niversary since the agency’s foundation”,
concluded Antonia Autuori.
Founded back in 1871, the Agency cur-
rently employs 44 persons. It has grown
with the city port in a symbiotic way,
guided by a passion for the sea, which
has been characterising the various
generations of the Autuori family.

Autuori Agency in Salerno expands its offices
The Grimaldi Group recently signed a
contract with the International Mari-
time Organization (IMO) to join the new
Global Industry Alliance (GIA). The
group of environmentally conscious
maritime industry players supporting
transitioning shipping and its related
industries towards a low carbon future.
Grimaldi’s signature arrived during the
week of the 71st session of the Marine En-
vironment Protection Committee (MEPC
71) which started on Monday 3rd July at
the IMO Headquarters in London.
Although maritime transport is by far the
most energy efficient mode of transport
on a ton/mile basis, the Group, being
among the major players of the sector,
recognizes the role and responsibility
towards the effort to improve shipping’s
environmental performance. It hopes to
achieve further savings in fuel consump-
tion and emissions through the uptake of
technical and operational measures.
GIA operates under the auspices of the
GloMEEP Project, a Global Environment
Facility (GEF)-United Nations Develop-
ment Program (UNDP)-International
Maritime Organization (IMO) projects
aimed at supporting developing coun-
tries in the implementation of energy
efficiency measures for shipping. GIA
focuses on five areas of collaboration:
Energy Efficiency Technologies (EETs)
& Operational Best Practices; Alternative
Fuels & Energy Carriers; Digital Trans-
formation and Finance; Human Element.

The Right Reverend Thomas A. Williams, Auxil-
iary Bishop of Liverpool, Titular Bishop of Ma-
geo, recently graced ACL’s new G4, Atlantic Star,
by joining the crew on their transatlantic voyage
from the port city. Throughout the years, Bishop
Williams has developed a very close relationship
with the maritime industry in Liverpool. However,
this was not the first ACL G4 vessel that the Bish-
op has blessed. He bestowed his blessing of the
Atlantic Sea at its christening ceremony in 2016.
On that occasion, Emanuele Grimaldi had extend-
ed an invitation to him to sail aboard one of the
new G4 vessels. The Bishop graciously accepted
and in August he sailed from Liverpool aboard
the Atlantic Star for its transatlantic voyage.
Upon embarkation Bishop Williams said he was
treated like a King by the Captain and Crew and
it was an honor for him to be onboard, especially
with the Captain up on the bridge. The Bishop
offered his thanks and blessings to all.
Once in New York, he began his journey to Chi-
cago and then to Seattle, Vancouver, British Co-
lumbia, Arizona, San Francisco, ending his trip
in Los Angeles to spend time with his extended
family before flying back to Liverpool.
Grande Dakar calls the Port of Dakar
NEWS
Last 5th of May the crew of the vessel Grande Dakar hosted a recep-
tion to celebrate its first call in the Port of Dakar.
Attending the event was the General Director of the Autonomous
Port of Dakar Dr. Cheick Kante, along with a port delegation who were
welcomed by Master Giuseppe Maresca.
The Port of Dakar is a strategic hub for the West Africa/South America
DeepSea Lines, which is served with five regularly scheduled services. For
almost 20 years Dakar has been the Deep Sea services’ hub in the Atlantic,
allowing the Group to connect several Ports of West Africa with North and
South America as well as the Med. The Grimaldi Group performs 180
calls a year and thanks to the strategic partnership with the Autonomous
Port of Dakar and Dakar Terminal it aims to further increase its presence.

Grande Dakar calls the Port of Dakar The Danish Kristian Mission ’Pilgrim
Convoy’ which has travelled through-out Europe and the Middle East for the past 40 years, finally returned to Esbjerg, mid of June 2017, sailing from Piraeus on board the Grande Mediterraneo. The convoy was made of two large residential caravans that had been shipped out of Esbjerg several years ago. With the extensive media and public in-terest to see the vintage carriages, Niels Winther & Co, Grimaldi’s agent in Den-mark arranged for the gates of the SAL Terminal in Esbjerg to be opened, allowing a welcoming committee to celebrate this historic moment, which all was transmit-ted live via television and radio. The two retro fitted residential caravans have for the past 40 years, long before the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, operated in communist controlled Eastern European countries. As part of a larger convoy of 13 units, they
sailed in 1995 to Haifa in Israel and par-ticipated in a peace initiative called ‘Desert Peace Expedition’. The units were towed by a 1965 Magirus Deutz air-cooled truck and performed ‘survival trips’ via the old caravan roads from Jordan to Gaza. From the Port of Esbjerg, the two cara-
vans will be towed to the small town of Ølgod in Jutland, Denmark and from there the last part of the journey will be onto Horsens, where the missionary couple Johny and Giséle Noer reside. The cou-ple was happy to bring back home their ‘mobile homes’ after 40 years!
S ince the beginning of 2017 various metro trains for the new extension of
the Copenhagen underground sailed from
Gioia Tauro in Italy to Esbjerg via the Gri-
maldi Lines Euromed Service. Upon arrival
in Esbjerg the units were then transported
by road on special trailers to Copenha-
gen. Using this technique the trains were
transported on the same trailers all the way
through, ensuring the fastest transit time
and the most secure and safe transportation.
Each train set measured 40 metres in length
and weighted approximately 58 tons, with-
out the truck and trailer. The trains are pro-
duced by the Italian company Ansaldo STS.
The Italian logistics company Baggio S.p.A.
oversaw the logistics. In total eight train sets
were transported over four shipments since
the beginning of 2017 through various ves-
sels of the Euro-Med Service.
