What is the connection between
music and instrument?
Without instrument, music still exists.
In ancient history, music comes from works and life. When
our ancestors were
hunting or fishing, they often went by a group of people. And, they
needed some different sounds to collaborate their action. When they
were relaxing or celebrating, they usually sang songs or
danced by a circle beside the fire. Even today in many backward
mountain areas or villages, people still like to sing songs
without any instruments.
The appearance and evolution of instrument enriches the genres of
music, and greatly promotes the development of music. The
typical ancient Chinese music
instruments includes Huqin,
Guzheng, Pipa, flute and chimes etc. These instrument encouraged
the development of music industry in Chinese history, and leave a
variety of great musical works for the modern world, such
as "High mountains and flowing water",
"Guangling powder", "falling wild geese in the sand", "three
lanes of plum blossom", "ambush on all sides". The
typical old Western music instrument includes Piano, French
Horn, Cello, Pipe Organ etc. They helped composers to write more
songs and music with rich choice in instrument. Representative
works are “Fur Elise” by Ludwig van Beethoven, “The
Marriage of Figaro” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and “Swan
Lake” by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky etc. The
appearance of electronic instruments brings a lot of changes
in music industry. First, a new genre called Electro music comes
out with electronic instruments. Secondly, you can use the
keyboard to simulate a variety of sound effects or even make
effects that real instruments can't. Types of electronic
instruments we usually see are electric guitar, electric bass,
electric piano, electronic piano, Synthesizer source, electric
drum, electric violin, electric cello, electric clarinet, electric
accordion, electric clock, etc.
Guzheng
How does music express musician's thoughts/ feelings?
Music expresses composer’s understanding to his/her life.
Living in the late
19th century, Peter Ilyitch Tchaikovsky felt
the big difference between
Ludwig van Beethoven was a silent, shy and inward person on the
outside. But inside his heart, he
was self-proud and strong. He thought that freedom and
equality were the root of happiness, and they
were not gifts from the God, people needed to fight for
them. With this kind of thinking, he composed
“Ode to joy”.
Different music express different
feelings/events/stories. Romeo and Juliet fall in
love, but they belong to two
different families:
Montague and Capulet, who have old grudges. This hinders a
love tragedy caused by their inability to marry each
other.
Madam Butterfly is another tragedy
about Qiaoqiao sang, a naive and lively Japanese
girl, who is called "Butterfly Girl". She abandoned the
traditional religious belief for love and committed herself to
captain Pinkerton of the United States Navy. Shortly after
marriage, Pinkerton returned home with the ship, and there
was no news for three years. Qiaoqiao sang is
convinced that he will return to her arms one day. Pinkerton
returned to USA, but he had another new marriage. He had
put Madame Butterfly behind. When he and his American wife
landed in Nagasaki again, tragedy inevitably happened: Madame
Butterfly, who had been waiting all night in her new wedding dress,
finally understood everything. She gave up her clever son. When
Pinkerton arrived, she killed herself with a sword.
Songs with lyrics and pure music, which one do you like the most?
Why? Songs have lyrics, lyrics help people who don’t
understand music at all understand music. Therefore, all people
can
understand the songs. Only a few listeners with high musical
literacy can understand pure music. In terms of technical
difficulty, pure music is more difficult than songs. The reason
is also because of lyrics. Pure music has no lyrics.
It
depends on music to create a sense of picture, so it requires more
from musicians, especially orchestral music. And the high-tech
musicians make not only songs, but also pure music,
because songs are usually more profitable
as songs have a wider audience. The audience with high musical
literacy likes to listen to songs as well as pure music. The
audience with low musical literacy only likes to listen to songs,
because pure music has no lyrics and is not easy
for them to understand. I mostly like listening to
pure music, but that doesn’t mean I don’t like listening to songs.
I enjoy more listening to
pure music because I think it’s more relaxing,
and I always picture what is happening in the music by my
mind. I sometimes liked to listen to it when I’m sleeping,
because I mostly will have a great dream when I am asleep
with
music.
I like the instrument Guzheng the most, usually because I play
it myself, and I enjoyed playing it. My favourite genre of
music is:
