Jumponafloat,throwsomebeads,dowhateverittakesbutmakesureyougettotheLincolnCommunityPlayhouseFeb.13-15fortheexcitingandentertainingNACT/Fest2015. Themaineventwillbeatleastthreeproductionsfrommembertheatres.OntapasofpresstimeisCommunityPlayers(Beatrice)with“CompletelyHollywood(Abridged),”TheLofteCommunityTheatre(Manly)with“TheseShiningLives,”andWayOutWestCommunityTheatre(Sidney)with“Boise,Idaho.” ProductionregistrationdeadlineisJan.30.Thatmeansthereisstilltimetogetyourshowregisteredifyoujusthaven’tgottenaroundtoityet,butdon’tdelayanymore! Aftereachperformanceapanelofthreeadjudicatorswillcritiquetheproductionsinfrontoftheaudience.Thesecritiquesessionsoftenproveveryinteresting.Watchingtheshowsandhearingthecritiquesprovidesawonderfulopportunityforyoutolearnaboutwhatworksandwhatdoesn’t.Thesearetipsyoucanimmediatelytakebacktoyourowntheatreandmakeyourshowsevenbetter.Plus,whodoesn’twanttospendanentiredaywatchingshows? Butwaitthere’smore!Notonlydoyougetatleastthreegreatshows,therewillalsobeaseriesofworkshopspresentedSaturdaymorning.Withtopicsrangingfromboarddevelopmenttocostumestherewillbesomethingthateveryonecanlearn. Oh,butthere’sevenmore!FridayandSaturdaynightsfeaturefunsocials.Notonlywillthisbeagreattimetokickbackandrelaxwithalittlefunandsilliness,butterrificnetworkingopportunities.Thoselittlesideconversationsandconnectionsmadeatafestivallikethiscanmoreoftenthannotbethebiggestlearningtoolofall. Proposed by-law amendment to allow for mail in ballots for Board elections
ThisDecemberIdirectedmy100thshow.Imentionthisnotfortheapplause(thoughfeelfreetothrowmoney).InsteadIbringthisupbecauseitremindedmeofhownomatterwhatthecircumstanceswecanalllearnsomethingwitheveryshow,regardlessofourexperience.ThesameistrueaboutwhyyoushouldattendNACT/Fest. Firstabouttheshow.ItwasthenewKenLudwigfarce“TheGame’sAfoot”.IampersonallyabigfanofLudwig’swork,hewritesinastylethatremindsmeGeorgeS.KaufmanorMossHart.Thisshowcombinesbothcomedyandsuspenseasit’salsoamurdermystery–setatChristmasnolesssoithitsjustabouteverygenre.Workingontheshowthereisofcoursethelearningthatcomesfromthebasicresearchallgooddirectorsshoulddobeforejumpingintoaproduction.Thencomestheprocessofworkingontheshow.Actorsalwayslearnmoreaboutthemselveswhileworkingoncharacters,andwedirectorslearnnotonlyaboutourselvesbutfinetuneourstringpullingtoguidetheactorsonthatjourney. Onethingthatstuckoutforthisproduction,however,wasafirsttimeperformerwehadintheshow.Shehadneverbeeninashowbefore,buthavingseenproductionsandwiththeencouragementofafriendshedidwhatmanypedestrianswouldn’tdream–sheauditioned.Talkaboutalearningexperience.Fromthefirstdayofrehearsalthroughthefinalperformanceshereceivedacrashcourseintheatreeducation.Whenopeningnightcameshewas
soastonishinglyproud(plusalittlenervous)ofwhatshehadaccomplished.Eventhe“veteran”actorsinthecastwereabletolearnbywatchingherstruggleandultimatetriumph. Regardlessofifyou’vebeentooneor100NACT/Fests,orbeendoingshowsalloverforyears,attendingFestivalisanopportunitytolearninperhapsunexpectedways. Youhavethelearningopportunitiesfromwatchingtheshows(IknowIcanalmostalwaysfindatrickorcleverbitofblockingtostealwatchingjustaboutanyshow).Youhaveopportunitiestolearnattheworkshopsaboutavarietyoftopics.WhatcouldbethemostbeneficiallearningcouldcomefromspendingtimeandnetworkingwithotherNebraskacommunitytheatreenthusiasts. Thatbenefitcanonlycomeifyouandyourfellowtheatrefriendsareactuallyatfestival.NoYouTubevideo,tweet,ortextmessagecancomeclosetocapturingthatactualreallifelearningexperience. SoplantobeinLincolnthisFebruaryforunexpectedandexcitinglearningopportunities!

TheNACTBoardisproposingthefollowingchangetotheorganization’sby-laws.ThiswouldcreateanewActricleIIISection13.Itwouldallowforthecastingofmail-inorelectronicballotsfortheannualelectionofBoardofDirectormembers.Thisitemwillbeontheagendaattheannualmembershipmeeting,whichwilltakeplaceattheawardsbrunchFeb.15,2015.
Electionsshallbeconductedbyballotdistributedbymailorelectronicallytoalleligiblevotingmembersnolaterthan60dayspriortoanannualmembershipmeeting.Tobecounted,theSecretarymustreceiveballotsnolaterthanoneweekpriortotheannualmeeting.Tobeelected,acandidatemustreceiveapluralityofthevotescastandballotsmusthavebeenreceivedfromatleasttenpercent(10%)ofthoseeligibletovote.

Meet the Board
FestivalisaterrificopportunitytoseesomegreattheatreproducedfromacrossNebraska.Inordertomaketheprocessfairandtreateveryorganizationequallytherearealitanyofrules.Hereareafewofthebasicrulesthatyou,asanaudiencemember,shouldknow. 10-60-10.Eachtheatrehasnomorethan10minutestoplacetheirsetonstage.Allthesetpieces,props,etc.mustfitintoa100squarefootspace(generally10feetby10feet)immediatelyoffstage.Sometimeswatchingaskilledteamassembleasetinlessthan10minutescanbejustasfascinatingasaperformance. Theperformanceitselfmustbelessthan60minutesinlength.Followingtheshow,theorganizationhas10minutestostrikethesetandplaceitinaloadoutspace. Followingtheperformancethethreeadjudicatorswillprovidefeedbackontheproduction.Everyoneisencouragedtostayandhearthefeedback.Youcanoftenlearnalotfromthesesessions.Thisyearforthefirsttimewewillbeusingpanelmethodmeaningtheadjudicatorswillallspeaktogetherinsteadofcomingoutoneatatime. Duringtheperformancesnooneisallowedtoentertheauditorium.Ifnecessary,peoplemayexit,butnoonemayenteroncetheperformancehasbegun. Finally,theadjudicatorswillselectoneshowfromtheFestivaltorepresentNebraskaattheRegionalFestival.

Nebraskansattendmoremusicalplays,operas,jazzperformances,andotherperformingartseventsthantheaverageAmericandoes,accordingtorecentresearchbytheNationalEndowmentfortheArts.Nebraskansarealsomorelikelytoattendartseventsinnontraditionalvenues,includingbars,restaurants,nightclubsandcoffeeshops. TheNationalEndowmentfortheArts(NEA)releasedthreereportsthismonththatspotlighttheartsinNebraskaandtheimpactofartseducation.AccordingtoanNEApressrelease,theresearch“revealsnewfindingsabouttheimpactofartsandculturalindustriesonGDP,aswellashowandwhyAmericansparticipateincertainartsactivities.”Allthreereportsweredevelopedfromdatacollectedin2012andcanbeaccessedatarts.gov.
