Communication With Parents – Prep News, School Calendar And The Record Book
Prep News is our main vehicle for communicating with parents about the week’s activities, upcoming events andimportant information about school life. Over the last year or so there have been numerous changes in the wayPrep News and the School Calendar are delivered to parents. I take this opportunity to remind parents that inaddition to the version of Prep News that is delivered via email each Friday afternoon, it is also accessiblethrough the Trinity Community website http://community.trinity.nsw.edu.au/. Previous editions of Prep News arealso available through this site or through this link. A number of parents have indicated that they preferred theprevious PDF format of Prep News. This is also accessible by following the link to ‘PDF version’ positioned in thetop right hand corner of Prep News when accessed through the website.
Whilst the Record Book continues to be an important and reliable source of information about upcoming events, the online version of the School Calendar provides additional information about upcoming events. I encourageparents to bookmark this site http://community.trinity.nsw.edu.au/navbar/calendar/calendar.html so that it canbe used as a reference point, particularly for week to week activities. The contents of the calendar can be filteredto only list Prep-specific events.
The Record Book is an important document for each family in the Preparatory School. As a tool for your son, ithelps him to organise himself with his homework and provides information on school events and expectations. Itis also an effective communication tool for parents and teachers. Additionally, parents are able to see upcomingPreparatory and whole school events. Please note the colour scheme for diary entries in the Record Book is;Black – Whole School, Dark Green – Middle and Senior School, Light Green – Preparatory School, and Blue – JuniorSchool. I encourage all parents to monitor their son’s Record Book on a regular basis.
Winter Sport
Last week was the first week of winter sport and there were some very promising results. It also marked a newera for the Prep School as we moved to a new, temporary home ground at Cooke Park. The Coffee Van willcontinue to be a regular fixture at Cooke Park each Saturday morning to provide parents with their coffee fix forthe morning.
Please ensure that you are aware of your son’s commitment. It is imperative that he is on time to the game, arriving 30 minutes before the scheduled starting time so that an adequate warm up can be undertaken andinstructions can be given by the coach. Please keep in mind that requests for leave for family events need to bedirected to me with sufficient notice so that replacements can be made if required.
I refer all parents and players to the Trinity Grammar School Sport Code of Conduct, which can be viewed byclicking Sport Code of Conduct. I ask that you reinforce these principles with your son and uphold themyourselves of a Saturday. At Trinity, we encourage boys to be gracious in winning as well as in defeat. Theshaking of an opponent’s hand at the completion of any game is expected and good play from an oppositionteam should be acknowledged in an appropriate manner. No player should criticise any teammate and there is tobe no swearing or fighting on the playing field for any reason. All Trinity teams are to be immaculately turned outin the correct playing strip and non-Trinity items of clothing are not to be worn.

Team lists are published each week. Please be aware that the coaches have the final say in terms of teamselections. This is quite often a difficult process and sometimes selectors do get it wrong. Some boys may feelthey have been misplaced. I encourage any boy who feels this way to do his best on Saturday to play anoutstanding game. Consistently strong performance is the way to show your talent and give the coach themessage that you have been placed incorrectly.
NAPLAN
Next week our Year 3 and 5 boys will participate in the NAPLAN assessments. These assessments are animportant part of our academic tracking processes. However, it is also important to note that these assessmentsand the data which is obtained from them are only one piece of the ‘reporting’ pie, alongside all otherinformation parents receive about their son’s learning.

Library News | Preparatory School
Library Remodelling
During the April holidays the Prep School Library was remodelled to try and utilise the space more efficiently. Wehave new inbuilt wall shelving around the perimeter of the room and new mobile shelving for the fictioncollection.
The mobile shelving is easily moved to create a more flexible learning space. The shelves are also at a standingdesk height, allowing them to be used as tables for boys to work at with their chrome books. In addition to themobile shelving we also have new flip tables for the back classroom area. These can also be relocated orreconfigured depending on needs and the learning taking place. The remodelling has also seen the addition offour new iPad’s to allow the students to access the library catalogue. These are positioned around the library oniPad stands or mounted brackets. These take up less space than the desktops and are more easily accessible tothe younger students.
The boys have been very positive and enthusiastic about the changes in the library. We have included some ofour favourite comments below.
‘I like your new style’‘Did you buy more books?’‘This is so modern!’‘I can find books easier now!’‘This shelf doesn’t wobble when we make domino chains!’‘It’s good’
The library is open to parents for borrowing from 8:10am - 8:45am and in the afternoons from 3:15pm to3:45pm. If you would like to set up a parent account please speak to any of the library staff and they are happyto help.

Author Visit For Years 5 & 6
Year 5 & 6 will have the author Allison Tait visit on the 26th of May. Ms. Tait is the author of The MapmakerChronicles, an exciting adventure series about the race to map the world. Boys are highly encouraged to readone of her books in preparation for the upcoming talk. Year 5 will be working in class groups in a hands-onworkshop called ‘Mapping Your Story’. Year 6 will participate in a presentation which looks at where ideas comefrom and the main elements of a narrative. This will be excellent preparation for when the Year 6 boysparticipate in Write a Book in a Day later in the term.
Kindergarten
This week Kindergarten planted broad beans in library as part of their unit, Sharing the Planet. They will berecording scientific observations of the beans growth over the next few weeks. The boys have also predictedwhat they think the bean will need for growth and survival. They identified that it would need water and sunlight, they also mentioned it would need ‘food’. We also planted a seed in a box to see what would happen if it had nolight and predicted what might happen. The boys will be continuing to monitor their beans over the comingweeks and will hopefully have a seedling ready for planting in week 4 or 5.

Canberra Camp 2017 | Year 6Recently, boys from the Prep School Year 6 classes have undertaken an education tour of the national capital. They were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’shistory, culture, heritage and democracy. Over the course of the three day trip, the boys visited ParliamentHouse, Old Parliament House, The War Memorial, The Australian Electoral Education Centre, The Royal AustralianMint, The National Capital Exhibition and Questacon.
Through guided tours and participation in role plays, the boys were able to develop a greater depth of knowledgeand understanding of their current unit of inquiry into ‘How We Organise Ourselves’. The experiences were wellreceived by the boys and their level of engagement in their learning was impressive.
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the nationalcapital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion theAustralian Government is contributing funding for each student under the Parliament and Civics EducationRebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.

SPORT
Sportsmaster | Prep School
Saturday Sport Round 1- Saturday April 29
It was a satisfying start to our Winter sport last weekend with some strong displays and great results.Congratulations to the 2nd and 3rd XI football teams recording victories against Newington Wyvern also to the11A Rugby who managed to snatch a last minute victory against a strong Central Coast Grammar team, and tothe AFL team who beat St Aloysius 91-6.
Football Skills
I have had a number of enquiries about the Saturday morning Football Skills Programme. The programme wasput in place to cater for the boys who have not yet been able to make a football team. We did not want to forceboys to play a sport that they weren't interested in and did not want to dishearten them from playing sport. Theprogramme gives those boys an opportunity to develop their skills and continue to push for positions in teams. Ifa boy from a team is granted leave, then a boy from the skills programme will be asked to replace him. MrsRobinson is assisted by an external coach to provide skill development and game-based activities.
Absences From Sport
Saturday Sport is a compulsory facet of School Life for Boys in Years 4 to 6. We understand that at times familieshave commitments that occur infrequently such as weddings or religious commitments. If you need to be awayfrom sport please write to Mr Wyatt so that he can approve your leave. If your son is sick or something else hasstopped your son from attending sport then a simple text message to the Sportsmaster (0414 747 396) would beappreciated.
