2 IONA PREP NEWS

Dear Members of the Iona Prep Community,

Thank you for making me and my family feel welcomed and feel a part of the Iona Prep family.

Since July I have met individually with all of the Brothers, the faculty, the administrative faculty, the staff, and most of the board of directors. During these meetings, I gained a better understanding of the history and

background of Iona Prep and learned its strengths and areas for improvement. These responses, in addition to the data and information which will be collected through our strategic planning process this year, will be the es-

sential components that shape the vision for Iona Prep as it approaches its 100th anniversary in 2016. A common theme that emerged as strengths unique to Iona Prep are the sense of community, the sense of family and teamwork that

encompass all facets of this wonderful school. Indeed, Iona Prep holds a dear and special place in the hearts of many, many individuals and their families.

I want to share with you one of my favorite books, Wooden, A Lifetime of Observations and Reflections On and Off the Court. John Wooden is arguably the greatest basketball coach of all time. His beliefs, teachings, and wisdom go far beyond sports, and ultimately address how to bring out the best in yourself and others. Wooden, who was a high school English teacher in Indiana before becoming a legend as a college basketball coach, was inspired by two men in his life – his dad and his high school math teacher. When Wooden graduated from grade school, his dad gave him an old, crumpled two dollar bill and a card (which he still carries with him). On one side of the card, was the verse by Reverend Henry Van Dyke:

Four things a man must learn to doIf he would make his life more true:To think without confusion clearly,To love his fellow-man sincerely,To act from honest motives purely,To trust in God and Heaven securely.

On the other side of the card was his father’s creed of “Seven Things To Do”. #1. Be true to yourself. #2. Help others. #3. Make each day your master-piece. #4. Drink deeply from good books, especially the Bible. #5. Make friendship an art. #6. Build a shelter against a rainy day. #7. Pray for guidance and count and give thanks for your blessings every day.

In high school, Wooden’s sophomore math teacher asked him to write a paper defining success. Imagine, even today, a math teacher asking students to write a paper that had nothing to do with math! Brilliant. That assignment led Wooden to reflect for decades about a definition of success – a defini-tion that had much to do with what his father taught him and was related to a verse that was dear to him

At God’s footstool to confessA poor soul knelt and bowed his head.“I failed,” he cried. The Master said.“Thou didst thy best, that is success.”

In 1934, Wooden’s years of reflection culminated in his definition of success and led to his writing the bestselling book entitled The Pyramid of Success. Wooden’s life is the embodiment of enduring Iona core values and his priorities are, and always have been, correct – family, faith, and friends.

In conjunction, I would like to share with you some thoughts from Pope John XXIII and Pope John Paul II. Their reflections, I hope will bring peace and comfort to you and your families as we share the joy of Christmas and the New Year.

The following statements were taken from the daily Decalogue of Pope John XXIII

• Onlyfortoday,IwillbehappyinthecertaintythatIwascreatedtobehappy, notonlyintheotherworldbutalsointhisone.• Onlyfortoday,Iwilldevote10minutesofmytimetosomegoodreading,rememberingthatjustasfoodisnecessarytothelifeofthebody, so good reading is necessary to the life of the soul.• Onlyfortoday,Iwilldoonegooddeedandnottellanyoneaboutit.• Onlyfortoday,Iwillfirmlybelieve, despiteappearances, thatthegoodProvidenceofGodcaresformeasnooneelsewhoexistsinthisworld.

And, from Pope John II,

Dear brothers and sisters, continue to care for your spiritual formation and to have frequent recourse to the sacraments. In particular, ensure that the Eucharist is the heart of your family-houses and of all your other social and educational activities. Revive your contemplative fervor and love for thedivine Redeemer, who makes himself in the Eucharist our food for immortal life. Draw from him the spiritual energy to be tireless Gospel workers, witnessing to tenderness among all who live in situations of hardship and neglect.

May God’s love, faith and compassion live in your hearts.

Fall 2008

Dear Friends of Iona Prep,

The school year is well underway and Iona Prep is firing on all cylinders. We welcomed 204 young men of the class of 2012 in September, and they are enjoying our continually improving facilities. Our

We approach 2009 striving to enhance the name and reputation of Iona Prep in our area, in our nation, and around the world. The office of mission integration is ironing out the details on student service trips to New Orleans

in February for “Operation Helping Hands,” and an immersion trip to work with the Christian Brothers in Peru in July. Lourdes, France

On August 8, 2008 Myles Gillespie ’09, Stephen Zach-ensky ’09 and Robert Pellow ’09, members of the Order of Malta Youth, attended their second pil-grimage to Lourdes, France. This year was the 150th Jubilee of the Apparitions to St. Bernadette. Over five million pilgrims will visit this small village, many of whom are handicapped. The Order of Malta Youth started fifteen years ago when young students devoted ten days of their summer to help the pilgrims. Iona Prep’s three young men partici-pated in two Masses at the Basilica of St. Pius X and helped the sick to bathe in the water of Lourdes. They assisted in the unloading of malades (sick) off the trains; on some days they averaged an eighteen hour day, rising as early as 4:30 am to meet the trains and ended the day helping with the pro-cession.Theboyshadtheopportunitytoexplorethe footsteps of Bernadette, attend Mass daily, enjoyed opportunities for retreat activities includ-ing walking and praying the Stations of the Cross. Fourteen adults including Kimberly Gillespie P’09 chaperoned the twenty-three students from the Westchester/Connecticut area. Mrs. Gillespie

was quoted as saying “It was a blessing for me to witness the Holy Spirit working through these three extraordinaryyoung men; they did the work of Christ with their own hands and gave freely of their talents with a sense of humor.”

FALL 2008 11

On the shelves of the bookcases in the Alumni Office sit years of history…yearbooks from as far back as 1929. Among those books sits a journal from 1928, commemorating the ‘spring entertainment and reception’ for Iona Prep. The performance was a production of “Three Wise Men”. Among the ads, one taken by John Gallin and Son. Eighty years later, another journal is produced. This time for the annual Mothers’ Auxiliary Emerald Isle Dinner; the back page was taken by John Gallin and Son. The only dif-ference in the ad: a listing of all the Gallin men who are also Iona Prep men and the line: Partners for Generations.

Two brothers, William ‘33 and Thomas ‘47 began the Iona/Gallin legacy. Each of them sent their sons to the Prep. Chris Gallin ‘79, Thomas’ son kept the legacy going, his three sons are all Iona men (two presently). Chris loves to talk about his family’s legacy with Iona. “I didn’t know about the 1928 ad but it doesn’t surprise me. We figured out that between 1955 and 1987, there was always a Gallin at the Prep, including my Aunt Betty Gallin who was the school nurse in the ‘70’s and my cousin Jim who attended the Prep for two years in the early 60’s. The best part about it is we know there are other families like ours, although maybe not any who can boast of supporting Iona for eighty years or having a family member in the building for 32 years! We have other great connections. Bob Sexton ‘47 was my dad’s brother-in-law and Jim Moore ‘47 was the best man at my parents wedding. I’d like to think that’s what makes Iona so special; you make life long friends and you’re part of a rich history and tradition.”

THANK yOUWe are grateful to the count-less families who believe in the Iona Prep Legacy and who have partnered with us to make the Iona Family part of their family. It is our hope to include other legacy fami-l ies in future Iona Prep newsmagazines. If you would like to share your story, please contact MaryLou Pagano in the Alumni Office.

After an undefeated regular season, the Gaels defeated Mount St. Michael and Xaverian High School in the quarterfinal and semifinal match-ups. On Saturday, November 22nd the varsity football Gaels were matched up with seven time defending champions Saint Anthony’s of Long Island. A tremendous crowd of Iona Prep stu-dents, parents, alums and friends were treated to 48 – 35 Iona Prep victory. Offensive line Jef-frey Mack ‘10 put together one of the best per-formances in league championship game his-tory: twenty-four rushing attempts for 493 yards and seven touchdowns. Iona Prep is one of the founding teams in the CHSFL and has been competing in the league since 1926. The 2008 varsity football team joins the 1954 and 1967 teams as the only undefeated varsity football teams in Iona Prep history.

Varsity Soccer

The 2008 varsity soccer had a great year under the leadership of new head coach Marcos Mon-teagudo. This year proved to be a breaking “first time in history” for the Gaels. Winning the regu-lar season division title, crowned Archdiocese champions and the first in school history that an Iona Prep team went to the State tournament. It hasalsobeensixyearssinceIonaPrepdefeat-ed rival Fordham Prep. The team finished with a winning record 9 of 11 as coach Monteagudo looksforwardtonextseasonwithmanyreturn-ing underclassmen.

Junior Varsity Soccer

It was a great year for the JV soccer team at Iona Prep. A 4-1 win against Xaverian illustrated their abilities, with a hat trick goal by Mark Tellez ’12 and another goal by Jack Welsh ’12 showed what this team was capable of accomplishing. Winning their final game against Stepinac would have en-tered the team into the playoffs; the final game ended in a tied score of 1-1. According to head coach Diego Monteagudo, “Although we fell a fraction short of our goal, this team has set the bar for the JV teams of the future.” The JV soccer looks forward to another challenging year in ’09.

Cross Country

Th is f a l l ’s c ross country season saw many incred ib le team and individual accompl ishments some of them for the first time in Iona Prep history. The Team once again traveled to Florida to compete in the 13th an-nual Disney Cross Country Classic. The varsity won the team championship defeat-ing fifty other schools from across the nation. Over three hun-dred fifty athletes competed in this champion-ship race. Not to be out done the JV team placed third in their race and also brought home one of the coveted “Mickey” trophies. Upon their return the team competed in the Westchester County Championships. With some great performances, the varsity finished second out of forty schools. Iona Prep had the overall best team performance

in Westchester in the three races. Sean Halpin ’09 won the individual title with a time of 12:53. Sean became the first Iona Prep athlete to win the Westchester County Cross County champi-onship in the fifty-nine years of the meet. Mr. Mitchell, the cross-country team coach had this to say “The team definitely put in lots of training hours since the summer, and it certainly paid off. Every week, the varsity team practices for 90 minutes on Sunday at Rockefeller State Park.”
