10 A 21ST CENTURY SOLUTION TO DENTAL IMPLANTS

Welcome

IN THIS MONTH’S ISSUE…

Summer is fast approaching and our lovely patients are getting ready for holidays, weddings and are enjoying life outdoors in general.

A really simple and quick way to achieving a whiter smile is with our fabulous

‘Diamond Shine’ hygiene treatment. The Diamond Shine cosmetic treatment is a

little like microdermabrasion for teeth, it delivers very fine micro-crystals onto

the front surface of your teeth at very high pressure. These micro-crystals simply

remove tough, ugly staining from teeth with ease, this is followed by a high gloss

polish with specialised diamond polishing paste which creates a very lustrous

finish that actually sparkles.

The treatment is perfect for those patients looking for a quick pick me up as the

results are actually quite dramatic and fairly long lasting. Perfect for heavy smokers,

or patients that have very difficult to remove stains from the dyes in food or red wine.

Many patients choose to have a Diamond Shine as part of their regular self-

maintenance, in the same way that we might choose to visit the hairdressers or

beauty salon. And why not? At only £49 it is extremely good value for money and

an instant route to a whiter, glossier smile.

Imagine a process, which sped up healing

and transformed the way dentists carried

out treatment, forever. Sounds great,

right? This is now a reality, and you can

benefit from this new procedure today

called PRGF, which stands for ‘Plasma

Rich in Growth Factors’.

PRGF is a breakthrough treatment in the field

of healing that can be applied to dentistry,

which is proven to greatly accelerate the

healing process, leaving patients comfortable

much more quickly following a procedure.

Traditionally, it can take people a while to heal

following any dental implant procedure, which

often deters patients from taking proactive

steps to enhancing their appearance for fear

that they won’t be able to eat, or would be

too uncomfortable. However, the benefit

of the PRGF system means that treatment

can be undertaken with minimal disruption

to the patient’s normal routine, making it

more convenient, simpler to undertake, and

much more comfortable straight after the

treatment has been completed.

The treatment works by taking a small

amount of blood from the patient before

treatment begins. This sample is then placed

in a centrifuge-spinning device, which isolates

a type of protein from the sample. These

proteins are used by our bodies naturally

as a part of the healing process from injury,

and help tissue to regenerate and wounds

to repair. By then applying this protein to the

area where treatment has been undertaken,

the patients are able to benefit from their

own natural process for healing.

TEAM Q&A

Q1: What is your role at

Portmore, what do you do

on a day to day basis?

I am receptionist aka

Director of first impressions!

My main role is to meet and

greet our lovely patients

and hopefully make them

feel welcome and of course

answering the phones and

generally helping towards

to smooth running of the

Portmore day!

Q2: What is your favourite

aspect of your role?

In all honestly it’s really

difficult to identify one

aspect but I think it’s

seeing patients at the end

of a lengthy treatment

plan that may have

involved such treatments

as implants, crowns or

veneers, who are absolutely

delighted with the result

that has been achieved,

sometimes exceeding their

expectations… a really

good feeling! Q3: If I wasn’t working at

Portmore I would be…?

Spending my time equally

between my home here in

Weybridge and somewhere

hot where I could lay on the

beach and have barbecues

with exotic food prepared

for me while I sip on a very

long cocktail!

Q4: My guilty pleasure is…

A designer handbag but then

of course you need the purse

to match (and possible the key

fob and phone case!) I also like

a drop of ice cold Champagne!

Q5: Outside of work I love…

Spending time with my

partner, we are continuing

to refurbish our cottage

which takes up a lot of our

time, although he has now

discovered gardening!

Catching up with family and

friends especially my Mum!

Q6: What I’ll be doing in 2015…

Looking forward to my

holiday in September, our

Portmore day out planned

for July and a colleagues

wedding in September – it’s

going to be AMAZING!! My

eldest niece is due to give

birth any day now so I’m

looking forward to welcoming

him or her into the world!

As it is National Smile month there is lots

of chatter about keeping those pearly

whites healthy.

A good brushing technique is vital to

maintaining a healthy smile. The brushing

technique that is used and recommended

by those at Portmore is the modified bass

technique. The modified bass technique

consists of:

• Tooth brush bristles at a 45 degree angle

into the gum line with bristles contacting

both gum and tooth

• Small circular movements are then use,

moving at a steady speed from tooth to

tooth

• This is followed for the inside surfaces,

keeping a 45 degree angle into the gumline

by the tongue and roof of the mouth

• The toothbrush is held vertically behind

the lower front teeth and the upper front

teeth- this ensures the gumline is brushed

• And don’t forget to brush the biting

surface of the teeth.

The following pictures can be used to

demonstrate the modified bass technique:

HYGIENESpaBRUSHING & ORAL HEALTH

Place bristles along the gumline at 45° angle. Bristles should contact both the tooth surface and the gumline.

Gently brush the outer surfaces of 2–3 teeth using a vibrating back, forth & rolling motion. Move brush to the next group of 2–3 teeth and repeat.

Page 9: Portmore eZine: Issue 6 - June 2015

It is recommended that you change your

manual toothbrush or the head of your electric

toothbrush every 3 months; after this time

bacteria builds up on the toothbrush bristles-

you will be brushing with a dirty toothbrush!

A good oral hygiene routine can help prevent

gum disease and decay; here are some

golden rules to help follow a good routine:

• Brush 2 x daily for 2 minutes with the

modified bass technique

• Carry out inter-dental cleaning daily,

either with floss or inter-dental brushes-

your team at Portmore can help you to

find out what works best for you

• Have regular hygiene appointments

where your oral health will be assessed

Maintain a 45° angle with bristles contacting the tooth surface and gumline. Gently brush using back, forth & rolling motion along all of the inner tooth surfaces.

Tilt brush vertically behind the front teeth. Make several up & down strokes using the front half of the brush.

Place the brush against the biting surface of the teeth & use a gentle back & forth scrubbing motion. Brush the tongue from back to front to remove odour-producting bacteria.

Why not visit the hygiene spa during

NATIONAL SMILE MONTH and

have your very own tailor made oral

hygiene routine developed?

Did you know?BONE AUGMENTATION CAN USE BONE FROM ANOTHER LOCATION AND/OR USING

DONOR PROCESSED OR SYNTHETIC BONE

MATERIALS

BONE AUGMENTATION

Ask us about…

What is Bone

augmentation?

Bone augmentation is

indicated where the

proposed site for implant

placement doesn’t have

enough bone to provide

a strong and sturdy

foundation for implant

supported teeth.

Why do I need a bone

augmentation?

If you are considering

having implants, and your

CT scans shows there is

not enough bone at the

planned sites, then bone

augmentation could provide

a successful solution.

Where does the bone

come from?

It can be your own bone

from another location

and/or using donor

processed or synthetic

bone materials. Often the

bone can be obtained from

inside your mouth.

What is the preference

at this dental office?

We try to allow our patients

to make an informed

decision of the options

available to them.

The patients will have

discussed these options

with the implant surgeon

and their restorative dentist

and together choose the

best option for them.

Page 11: Portmore eZine: Issue 6 - June 2015

N01932 855 011 [email protected] wportmoredental.co.uk 9

How long does the

procedure take?

Bone grafts are performed

in a dedicated surgery

using local anaesthetic to

numb the treatment areas

as involved. Intravenous

sedation can be added

to remove anxiety. The

procedures typically takes

from one to three hours

depending on what is

involved. Implant placement

done at the same time as

augmentation takes longer.

What is PRGF?

This is an acronym for

plasma rich in growth

factors. We use

this technique to

regenerate bone

and soft tissue

using a small

amount of your

blood. It also speeds

up the healing process

and help to reduce post-

operative pain.

How long does it take for

the transplanted bone to

grow enough new bone to

support a dental implant?

On average it takes about

three to six months.

Is there anything I need

to do between the

augmentation and the

implant being fitted?

No, this is when healing is

taking place and the bone is

forming into mature bone.

Will I need follow up

appointments and if so

how many?

Again it depends on the

procedure. Usually it is one

follow up appointment until

the next stage of treatment.

What is the success rate at

this dental office?

We have a very good

success rate. With the high

care and professionalism we

provide it is about 96-98%.

If you wear a denture(s) or have failing

teeth then All-On-Four Dental Implants

could greatly improve your quality of

life and restore your confidence.

If you lack sufficient bone mass you may have

previously been discouraged from implants

or told you need to have bone grafting

procedures prior to placing dental implants.

With the All-on-4 practically anyone can

have this procedure sometimes completed in

a visit taking as little as 2.5 hours per arch.

Like natural teeth, they are maintained

in the same way, i.e. can be brushed and

cleaned.  Unlike dentures they do not

have to be taken out nor do you need

adhesives.  Best of all for most patients

there is no bone grafting required,

which is something quite common with

traditional implants.

Once fitted, it will help to create a

healthier mouth and a healthier body.

How?  You will be able to chew your food

properly and enjoy every meal fully. Food

digestion starts the moment you placed it

in your mouth.

In contrast to dentures, they are

comfortable as there is no pressure on

your gums, so no more coming back to the

dentists to have a bit shaved off etc. The

results are immediate!

Unlike dentures, this technique uses

four implants per arch, (compared to

up to eight in traditional methods) and

are placed at an angle, which allows for

increased contact by using the natural

support of your bone.

You will be treated by Dr Johann Styger

who is highly experienced in implants.

At your initial consultation Johann

will ascertain and discuss with you

the best treatment option and if you

are a suitable candidate. You can once

again enjoy having hot and cold food as

taste improves.

CONSULTATION WITH JOHANN TODAY.
